While you were sleeping

I was working.  And eating.

Here’s three shifts-worth of food.

Tuesday night:

  • spinach, carrots, quinoa and eggs (topped in Bragg’s and nooch)
  • baby carrots
  • tamari roasted almonds
  • Udi’s bread with Artisana cashew-tahini butter
  • Kettle Pop organic kettle corn

Not much to say here.  It tasted like kettle corn.  Duh.

Wednesday night:

  • brown rice, spinach, and Sunshine veggie burger (original)
  • baby carrots
  • Inka Chips sweet plantain chips

So good!  Even though the whole bag is considered 3 servings (which I obviously ignored and treated as a single serving), the nutritional info is still not bad.

Better than the usual salt bombs I usually snack on.  I love my salt, but sometimes I feel a bit guilty about my sodium intake.  These are vegan, gluten free, and FODMAPs friendly.

Thursday night:

  • spinach, carrots, quinoa and egg (again with Bragg’s and nooch)
  • kookie karma raw cacao buckwheat granola
  • baby carrots
  • theo dark chocolate with salted almonds

I got the buckwheat granola sample pack a while ago and forgot about it.  It was so so.  I picked out the walnuts because I don’t like them raw.  Buckwheat has a very distinct flavor and sometimes I’m in the mood for it and sometimes I’m not.  Thursday night I was not.  Luckily I had dark chocolate on hand to cleanse my palate.  Theo chocolate is effing amazing.  At first I was attracted to the pink wrapper, but the flavor made me go back for this bar again and again.  Kyle got a couple for me from the co-op because he saw they were running out.

As you can see, I don’t eat as much on night shift as I do on day shift.  Not consciously, I just don’t get as hungry.

Since I ride my bike to work I have some sort of snack before I start the shift.

Then I eat “dinner” when I get a lull in the night after medicating and assessing patients…usually around 9-10 pm.  The last night I got an admission from the ED though so I didn’t eat til around midnight.

Then I continue with tea/coffee/water and the rest of my snacks throughout the rest of the shift as I get hungry.  I usually take my “lunch break” (hour nap) between 2-3 am, so I brush my teeth before and after that, which means I don’t eat a while after that.  But that’s just my average night.  They are all different really and I try and listen to my body, eating if I’m really hungry, drinking fluids constantly, and not munching mindlessly just because I’m bored.

Back on day shift next week!  Woo hoo!

I can only imagine how tough it must be to constantly be changing your shifts- leading to weird eating schedules.. My body seems to be on an alarm system for meal/snack times- and I tend to get cranky if that gets shifted.. (Maybe I’m spoiled?) Your a trooper lady!

Woah, that night shift business sounds crazy! I’m impressed that you can do it at all. I’m going to have to search for those Theo bars though, they look killer

I am also a day-night rotater! I am an RN in the NICU and I flip every three weeks. I feel like it took a good year of working before I could figure out what works and doesn’t work for me. I am still not the best sleeper during the day, but I have to say that I am able to work out more when I am on nights since I usually don’t sleep as long. Either way, I absolutely love my job and don’t want to do anything else! Maybe one of these days I will be straight days!

how often do you change between days/nocs?

i don’t have much of an appetite ever on nights. i get through with yogurt, granola, and a crap ton of water. then i get home and i’m starving so i usually make a spinach omelet with laughing cow and roll it up in a whole wheat tortilla. YUM.

i used to be 50/50 with half the month of each but now im pretty much only days with a few random night shifts as they need people. this stretch of three was my only nights for the month. i prefer days so i am glad theyve hired more peeps because it means im higher up in the ranks.

I love Theo (their Chile Chocolate Bar is amazing!)…They give tours of their factory here in Seattle and you get to try lots of samples and see how the magic happens… If you’re ever in Seattle, you should definitely check it out! 🙂

Woah dude, night shifts must be rough… I totally couldn’t handle working them. It throws my body clock out enough working till 1am once a week! My body thrives on a strict routine, I think I would lose the plot having it changed all the time. Good on ya 🙂

Wow, you manage really great for such a hectic schedule! The world is very lucky to have great nurses like you out there! I really admire nurses for all that they put up with and what they do! All your eats look fantastic as well! 🙂

My go-to lunch lately has been Curried Lentils (loving it with or without the fries and cheese).
