When I first launched into this whole baby allergy thing, I was overwhelmed to say the least. And I have a pretty strong background in food and sensitivities. So I imagine it’s even worse for a non-food-obsessed parent with a new diagnosis – kinda like you’re stuck in the middle of a tornado of info. Right at the time when you feel like you’re getting your bearings with your new little one!
For this reason I’m going to share what I feed P. And what I do in social situations. And all the stuff I learn as I go.
I wasn’t going to have baby stuff on this blog, but it’s my life now. Despite my best efforts, it consumes my every thought. And I want to help other allergy mamas (if I can). If you have zero interest in baby stuff, you can skip these posts. I’ll still share other recipes on HHH.
For the record, my little man CAN’T have: peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, soy, gluten, or dairy.
He CAN have: eggs, shellfish, fish, coconut*.
*The FDA classifies coconut as a tree nut, but FARE considers it a palm fruit.
Stay tuned.
Please don’t take my blog as a replacement for medical care or advice. If you have questions, see an allergist before introducing new foods or trying my recipes!
I like your baby posts. I’m sure lots of people do too. It’s your life now. I’ve only had a baby for 2 weeks and haven’t blogged about anything but him since!
Interesting article on peanut allergies in the NYT today: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/02/03/as-peanut-allergies-rise-trying-to-determine-a-cause/
Allergies are so scary, but you’re doing an awesome job handling them!
You are so such a great & brave mama. I love “following” your journey. As always thanks for sharing.. & one day I will get those Jillian DVDs! 😉
I don’t have kids, but I don’t mind the baby talk at all. It’s very interesting to me to see bloggers who share their day to day. I love those blogs the best. Keep up your writing, and your readers will follow. 🙂
ps, the little man is so cute!
Hi Elise, I live in the UK and there was a story on the news recently abour children and peanut allergy. Addenbrooke hospital have done a trial were chidren were given a small amount of peanut each day, while being closely monitored, which they were able to tolerate. A bit like when you get an injection i suppose. Obviously you can’t do that with your little P but when i heard the story i thought it would give hope to you and other parents of children with allergies that there may be a solution one day.
As a mom to a 6.5 month old, I find these sort of posts interesting! Our doctor is of the, waiting has made allergies worse school of thought, so we will be trying peanut butter soon. I’m nervous though. My sister has a moderate tree nut allergy, hives all over her body.
I’m so glad you’re willing to share. I’m sure its stressful opening yourself up, but I appreciate it!
Hey!
I follow your blog……for about a year now. I’m in the same boat with one of my children. She is allergic to all of the same foods your little man is, as well as eggs & coconut! It’s hard to feed her sometimes, because I basically have to make everything from scratch and carefully read ingredients. Also, she’s getting pickier with her food choices as she gets older (she will be 2 in April). There are some really nice websites out there that have allergy free recipes. http://www.realfoodallergyfree.com is a nice one to start with. thankfully, today there are more options out there for kids with food allergies, but it still is difficult and also stressful at times.
love the blog!
Megan
thanks megan. so sorry you’re going through the allergy thing too. 🙁
Thanks for the website. It’s definitely challenging finding the time to cook everything from scratch…adding in the pickiness as he gets older like yours will be even more interesting.
its scary, but i read a few studies also linking earlier introductions to lower allergy rates…but that apparently didn’t matter. good luck! ill keep you in my thoughts.
fyi, if you’re really nervous about giving it orally and having a reaction, my allergist told me a trick.
if you place the food (i.e. peanut) on your child’s forearm – maybe rub it a bit to get the allergen a chance to expose itself – and wait a bit, it will get red and react if there’s an allergy. its not ann exact thing, but there should be some sort of a skin reaction if your child is allergic. at least that way you could try it in a non-oral trail first?? i haven’t tried it myself but thats what i plan to do with seeds before i try those again. in a few years.
saw it! thanks meg!!
its crazy how these kids come and take over our lives. in a wonderful way of course 🙂
i keep meaning to comment on all your posts! but really all i wanted to say was: if its not one thing its another thing…so even if you’re having breastfeeding issues, don’t get frustrated or despair (easier said than done), because there will always be something!!! ill hope for no allergies for alexander!
Where did you get his high hair from? I am looking for one for my son and love yours!
I agree with everyone, love hearing about your journey – especially the baby stuff. It’s all very helpful/interesting, thank you for sharing!
its the oxo tot – got it off amazon. heres a link: http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Sprout-Chair-Taupe-Birch/dp/B003AM8CLO
HIGHLY recommend. not a single negative thing i can say about it (other than the price – its kinda $$$)
thanks jessica!
Your honesty is so refreshing. As a person who is not so into babies, I’ll be a bit sad to see less food rambles and more baby talk, but I commend you for being who you are and not trying to hold yourself to some idea of what you should do. You are an amazing mother (from what I can tell) and I wish you all the luck with the food allergy situation!
thanks so much annabell. i appreciate your honesty as well.
