I rarely care about special holiday meals on day’s I work (usually I just reschedule holiday celebrations* as it suits my hospital schedule), but for some reason I was dead set on an Easter Dinner that didn’t involve reheating leftovers. However, as I already shared, I was at the hospital all weekend. Which meant Kyle ditched Santa Monica to spend the holiday with his parents. Which meant I was in charge of providing whatever “special something” I wanted for myself. Cooking a real meal (without the microwave) after 12+ hours of nursing is ludicrous. … Read more >

Somehow the topic of childhood cartoons came up the other day and I mentioned how much loved Popeye. It was one of my top three for sure. Yogi Bear and Woody the Woodpecker were other favorites. But the idea of Popeye chowing down on spinach and saving the world made me so happy as a wee one. Really. It still makes me happy. So does spinach. I wonder if I’d love leafy greens as much today if I hadn’t grown up on that cartoon? Remember this recipe for vegan creamed kale? Yup, I did it… Read more >

When I was in junior high, we had an elective called MASH. It was made up of four subjects that we would rotate through over the year, one per quarter. I can’t remember what the first two letters stood for (how pathetic!), but the “S” was for shop and the “H” was for home ec. The reason I remember these is because they were the most impressionable. I feel like I could be one of the luckiest people ever because my husband craves (as in, actually requests without arm twisting) big salads and tofu dishes for dinner. Seriously. I’m either the world’s best cook (nope, that’s not it) or I won the lottery in finding my soul mate (sounds more likely). Naturally I oblige 100% of the time (I approach his veggie cravings like a rare bird watcher, not wanting to scare them off by making any noise or ruffling any feathers). So even if I’m in a comfort food kind of… Read more >
