Summah summah time

We have produce in abundance and I’m loving it.  Being surrounded by farms has major perks.

I foraged these plums on my morning jog with P – he snacked on one en route home.  There’s a park with tons of fruit trees near us and last year I got a bunch too.  The birds try to dominate them but there are literally hundreds of plums so it’s not really a competition.  Yet.  The blackberries aren’t quite ready but I’m ready to pounce for those because it’s more of a struggle to beat the rest of the world to them.

This past weekend I cooked up the first bounty from my own garden (green beans) for dinner!  But let me back up because I photographed way more meals than I usually do so I want to share. 🙂

On Friday I went to the zoo with some moms and baby friends and I almost decided to do take-out instead of making dinner.  Almost.  In the end, my guilt for spending money when we had plenty of groceries won and I made a delicious meal.

Before leaving for the zoo, I started quinoa and prepped the rest of the stuff and just threw it in a big tupperware to deal with once I got home.

I’m so glad I did that work ahead of time because we ended up going to an impromptu pool party right after we got home from the zoo.  A friend (who’s a teacher) just finished the year off and was in the mood to celebrate, so Kyle came home to change and we brought P and his floatie and joined for as long as we could before returning home to put the little guy down.

3 cups cooked quinoa + 1 can black beans + 1/2 pint cherry tomatoes + 1 ear grilled corn + 2 tbsp lactose free sour cream + juice and zest from 1 lime + handful cilantro + 1 1/2 avocado

Saturday morning we went on a family run and then I made breakfast for everyone.

While Mr. Patty-cakes napped, I made salad for the party we were going to that afternoon.

Kyle and I had snacky lunches since we were going to the party shortly thereafter.

I love this dip and I never would have thought to try it until I read this article.  Trader Joe’s just keeps getting better and better.  This dip reminds me of the tempeh salad that I used to go gaga over from WF.

That vegan ice cream sandwich (omgeeeee) is the only food photo I have from the party, but here are some cute interesting ones of P.

He likes water.  Clearly.

My mom came to Davis to babysit that evening, so we went home mid-party (~5 pm) to do his bedtime routine and then went back out while my mom gave him his bottle and (tried to) put him down.  Apparently he wasn’t having the change up in routine but she made it work.  😛

We enjoyed the social time out for sure and got home just before 10 pm (pretty late for us!).  My mom gave us a debrief and then hit the road to drive back to the East Bay.  Grandma of the year I tell ya.

The next morning was a slow one…no agenda all day aside from the house chores.

I made a ton of tuna salad (recipe in this post) for Kyle and I to share.  The afternoon was packed with two grocery runs plus a trip to my friend’s to pick up 3 dozen farm fresh eggs.

Kyle BBQ-ed for dinner.

Since I had already finished off the See’s candy (it didn’t even last a week!) for dessert Kyle got me a Justin’s PB cup (it’s been a while since I’ve had peanut butter and I forgot how yummy it is!).  And once it finally cooled down a bit in the late evening, I worked on the garden while Kyle did some work on the computer outside.

I love the posts with so many meal photos- the quinoa bean salad is so perfect for summer! I am also crazy jealous of the free plum supply, that’s really amazing.
Glad you can still have an occasional nut butter indulgence, life without those justin’s cups would be sad….
