Products & produce

What’s with the latest crazies?  Kanye?  Serena?  Lady Gaga?  (Although at least her kind of crazy is not malicious).  Medications people, stick to the MD recommended schedule.

Froth.  Mmmm.  I haven’t been noshing on very many blog-worthy eats lately, so here’s a recap of some past products I have tried (some adored).

IMG_3954IMG_3956

Dessert HUMMUS!?!  Yes, friends, yes, I did.  The Original Crazy Camel Dessert Hummus has struck gold with this delish treat.  In the words of my Brookie boo Y.B.

With apples – yum.

With Dave’s Killer Bread – yummer.

IMG_3959

Straight up with a spoon – yummiest!

Thanks everyone who forwarded me this company’s info!  I still have SO many flavors left to try: caramel apple, PB, chocolate mousse, etc.  AMAZE.

The new Whole Foods in my hood (UWS lovah) has a wall of bulk bins that are simply TO.DIE.FOR.  In othah words, I may as well hand over my bank account digits now…

IMG_4381 IMG_4382

After browsing for a few minutes hours, I stumbled upon the above (which has since become my latest obsesh).  I can only describe these as chunks of caroby, nutty, rice crispy heaven.  Yes, the dessert gods were smiling the day this was invented.  If you live near a Whole Foods, find these stat.  If you don’t live near a Whole Foods…my sympathies.

I am at the damn store so much, I’m thinking of bringing a pillow and sleeping bag and asking what the store policy is on sleepovers.  Who else is game?

IMG00265

The balsamic tofu got the thumbs up.  The macrobiotic rice salad was lacking in flavor though.

IMG00267IMG00266

Hummus and pitas – always staples in this girl’s diet.

Quinoa polenta?  Once I laid eyes on this beaut, I couldn’t pass up the chance to try it out.

IMG_4344IMG_4345

Ancient Harvest should have mentioned it’s product has a slightly gel-like texture.  It was ok, but I wasn’t in love.

IMG_4400

I sliced it, heated it in a frying pan, and topped it with hummus, nooch, and raw corn.

IMG_4403

This dish would TOTES win the Top Chef quick fire color challenge.  Yellow, yellow, and MORE yellow…and bangin’ with flava, of course!  Admittedly, the texture was pretty hard to get over, though, and I won’t be buying this again.  Fun to try though, and I still have half the polenta left.  Any ideas?  I was thinking quinoa polenta fries, but it’s too hot to fire up the oven.

Oh, and since I promised the post title implies some produce was consumed – here are some of my latest bowls of fresh fruit (aka carb heaven).

    Seriously, what’s up with Kanye?!

Dessert hummus?! How did I miss that?

Just let me know which store and I’ll be there with my jammies and sleeping bag.

  2. The Foodie Diaries

Oh my, never tried dessert hummus! Party foodie foul! I may have tried to bite the screen at the site of that corn concoction, aaaaaand I’m down for a WF sleepover. In fact, I’ve often dreamt about having all-night access to those glorious aisles. True story.

  3. The Voracious Vegan

This post was awesome and makes me with I had never left the states after uni to move back home to Saudi Arabia….because we have NO Whole Foods here! All of that stuff looks SO amazing! Dessert hummus?!?!? YES PLEASE! I love those carob rice crispy bar things, they look delicious. So much good stuff…

  4. insideiamdancing

WF camp out? I’m game! I think it would be awesome to ‘accidently’ get locked in there overnight. I am dying to try the dessert hummus- can you taste the hummus? Sounds too weird to not try.

Polenta- do you have a George Foreman? Fries are my go-to for the polenta logs but maybe it would work in a frying pan? Do little cubes and use them as croutons?

Going with Friday 9th for blogger dinner. YAY- 3 weeks from Friday!

  5. elise

i used to have a foreman grill and i have no clue where it wandered off to…somewhere in the ca to east coast move it got lost along the way. you cant really taste the hummus. if i had tried it without knowing the name, i would never have known there was anything chickpea about it. still good though. i was a little nervous at the first bite though…

    hooray for the 9th!!

  6. ksgoodeats

That’s it. I’m lacing up my Pumas right now and walking to your hood – I need to try this hummus. Actually, I MUST try this hummus.

Chunks of carob? Yes, please. I was just at WFs this morning – guess I’ll just have to go back! Oh, darn.

I’ll bet you Chris Martin was thinking of that dish when he wrote ‘Yellow.’ If not, he should have been!

  7. elise

hahaha. you neeeeeeeeed to try that hummus. although to be honest, its not so much hummus, as it is dessert pudding. chickpea flavor is not so detectable… should i do meals by colors? until they start making purple hummus, my options are limited to a more beige palette.

  8. blueeyedheart

I randomly came across that polenta last week, and I was going to buy it, but I exhibited a tremendous amount of self-control and didn’t make an impulse purchase. 😉 Are you saying I made the right decision??

  9. Courtney

Are you kidding me with that dessert hummus?! I wonder if I could make it at home?! I have never seen it around here, but I will keep my eyes open…it can’t be THAT hard to make, though, right?! I mean, they must give you the ingredients on the website….I’ll get on it, stat!

There is a produce store that I go to waaaaay too regularly (like, a few times a week!) and they totally know me there, lol! I like your sleepover idea…I should check with them about just moving in, actually. I would certainly be well fed 🙂

I am eating a HUGE bowl of carb heaven right now–papaya and raspberries. YUM!

    Courtney

  10. janetha

a friend of mine gave me some of that dessert hummus! i have yet to try it though. what do you think the best thing to eat it on is? aside from a spoon…

quinoa polenta looks intriguing! and you know it is intriguing because firefox does not recognize the word “polenta” or “quinoa” when i type them.

  11. Ada

OMG I need to try that hummus, it looks awesome! I’m obssesed with the bulk bins at the new UWS Whole Foods as well, those carob bites are awesome.

I usually make the tube of polenta in the manner you suggested, as “fries”. It’s one of my favorite side dishes.

  12. Steph

I’ll camp out with you at Whole Foods….no problem!

  13. elise

    yup. sadly, i am.

  14. elise

yeah, it doesnt seem too complicated. its not very chickpea-y so im not sure how much you could actually call it “hummus” but whatever. i enjoy a good gimmick every now and then…

  15. elise

i was wondering that myself…the only things i could think of were apples and bread/english muffins. i was thinking maybe blended into oats may also work? not sure really? let me know if you think of anything super crafty… whats up with firefox?? switch it up to google, yo.

  16. elise

yeah and bulk bins are so much cheaper too – AND automatic portion control. perf. im gonna have to try to “fry” up the polenta…

  17. elise

i think its brand new…so you arent too behind 🙂

  18. elise

me too!! pretty sure a sleepover in WF is every foodie’s dream…

  19. elise

oh no! so sad. WF needs to get on the international presence! or else you need to get back here!! how long were you in the states? where did you study?

  20. angieinatlanta

DESSERT hummus!? Pumpkin pie flavor!? Give that to me now!

  21. Emily

I’ve had savory pumpkin hummus before, but never dessert! such a good idea.

I totally identify with spending way too much money and time at Whole Foods + eating probly more fruit than I really need each day. Could be worse, right? I’ve gotta scour the bins for those energy chunks!

  22. molls

    yum dessert hummus… what!

so i made my own variation of tofu hummus and wow i am loving it seriously thank you for the awesome idea!

  23. chuck

Hi there I am chuck the creator and maker of the dessert hummus. We are very new and only in a few stores in New England at this time. We are growing fast so look for us. For now you can order on line a dessert hummus.com At this time the post office has the best shipping rates. I am working with UPS and Fed ex for better rates and it won’t be long. Some dipping ideas for you all are . The Almond hummus taste like a marzipan just so you know. I love it with fresh cold pears and a glass of white wine. If you dip a red grape into it then it will taste just like a cherry from the jar. Now add some of the chocolate hummus to the same grape and you will have a choc. covered cherry! Really it does. Also great inside crepes, on waffles, apples and such. Vanilla wafers is great with all of the. I like cheezits and cheddar rice cakes with the caramel apple. Also great on pancakes and such. The maple walnut is again great with any fruit and as a breakfast spread. The Pumpkin pie is best with a graham cracker or ginger snap as it’s like the pie crust. It really does taste like P. pie. I have also had and loved it with carrots, parsnips and raw sweet potato slices. Many of them are good on ice cream as well. The choc. hummus is great with stberris and bananas. I have made choc. hummus and banana sands. Many people eat it out of the tub with whip cream. The peanut butter is great with the chocolate hummus on anything! Also use it with any fruit or veg you would use regular Peanut butter with. I have made PB and J sand with it as it cuts the fat way down. One person emailed me and said they like to freeze it (they all freeze really well) then they cut into cubes and eat it. Have to try that one still. All of the flavors are all natural. Gluten and dairy free. They all have the same cals. per 2 tbls. serving as regular hummus, yet half the fat and the same nutrition. They have a three week shelf life give or take. I freeze every tub I make as soon as it is made. They can be refrozen as well. I hope that gives a few ideas. Part of the fun with this product is coming up with new ways to use it. Oh I have also used the choc. flavor to ice cup cakes with. Just put them in the fridge and wrap them as the hummus will dry out after a while. So if you want to try it please go to desserthummus.com Thanks so much. If I can help anyone with anything then fedbychuck@comcast.net 603-841-5787 Be well Chuck

  24. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

Those little carob square sure look….divine. Wow. That’s a Dessert God creation, fa sure.

As for your bowls of fruit. Funny that you put “carbs” in that sentence. I am one of those people who intellectually knows that fruits are carbs but for me, it’s not a true carb. A true carb would be chocolate, agave, maple syrup, oats, etc. but fruit just doesnt rank 🙂 Enjoy your fruit mama!

  25. elise

chuck! thanks so much for the feedback. this was great information, and i can’t wait to try out your recommendations. i can’t wait for your business to spread! i’ll keep my eyes peeled for them!!

  26. elise

yeah!! so glad you liked it 🙂

  27. elise

yeah, i mean id rather be browsing the aisles of WF for hours than any other place…

  28. elise

haha. that was MY reaction 🙂

  29. elise

yeah, i think thats just the bio background in me. i call everything carbs because i know its chemical structure, haha. nerd alert!!

  30. broccolihut

Considering my odd infatuation with exotic hummus flavors, I think this dessert hummus needs to make its way into my life ASAP!

  31. elise

    yeah..its a keeper 🙂

  32. julie

hahahaha oh my god I literally JUST emailed you with the dessert hummus link. and THEN I read this. fail and fail. haha well glad you already found and loved it 🙂

  33. Diana (Soap & Chocolate)

I hear ya on your aforementioned cost vs. value quandary. Especially as someone who grocery shops for one! I’m sure that I more often than not end up paying a higher price for a smaller quantity, mostly for things that would go bad otherwise (which I guess is ultimately more expensive, buying something that gets wasted, that is). HowEVER, those Energy Chunks are to die for (I’ve put em on the blog several times) and they don’t go bad quickly (that I know of…) so I’ve been stashin em in my deskie drawer for emergency bites, ya know what I mean! Healthy “candy”ish food, that’s what I’m talkin about. 🙂

  34. Melinda

I always see that quinoa polenta and have yet to try it

I was watching when Kanye took the mike from Taylor Swift- I seriously thought it was a joke at first! Props to Beyonce for giving her back her rightful moment 🙂 And Lady Gaga- not malicious- but a little weird haha

I can’t go to WF without spending up all of my $$$ lol Since I don’t have one close by, when I do get to go, I go crazy!

  35. homegirlcaneat

OMG DESSERT HUMMUS??? YB YB YB YB YB YB YB YB!!!!!

  36. Olivia

I am going to delurk too, because I creepily thought of the hungry hungry hippie while consuming my dinner tonight. My name is Olivia and I’m a creeper. I admire your eats daily, I admire your attitude towards food and your ability to fuel your body and mind so flawlessly.
But basically, I want you to try this now:
Guacaquinoa. With chickpeas. Come up with a snazzy name please and eat it all day everyday.
Smoosh a ripe ‘cado into leftover (cold) quinoa. Add garlic powder, chili powder, and balsamic. Smoosh and mix. Add in chickpeas (al dente, I agree!) and feel free to smoosh a few to simulate hummus (or you will probably add in some hummus and take this over the top!). Mix and smoosh as desired, season with salt and pepper and more chili powder as desired. Enjoy the masterpiece of perfect textures and flavors.
I bet raw corn would add a nice sweetness and crunch. I sprinkled on some raw almonds and sea salt at one point.
    That’s my input.
I need to get some dessert hummus.
OH and try chickpeas (smooshed and whole as desired) mixed with a banana and raw almond butter. If you want to.

  37. elise

oh my gosh! olivia, this all sounds so tasty!! you better believe im going to try these amazing combos, stat! haha. i appreciate your kind comments AND you de-lurking…cant wait to get my *quin-a-mole* on (as you said) all day every day 😀

  38. elise

the carob chunks that you got at integral were the first time i had seen em and when i saw them at WF i immediately knew i HAD to try them….so yes, they are a staple for me now too.

im basically shopping for one also. i mean kyle would eat my meals if we were ever together when we ate. sadly, our schedules just dont overlap. i know you are a big fan of the union square market though, and they are pretty good $-wise for getting fresh produce.

  39. elise

beyonce was def a classy lady.
WF has the same hold on me, and i DO live nearby.

  40. Randell Kerfien
