This girl put her suit on as soon as she got up every morning and then sat waiting patiently for everyone else to be ready. Since Kyle and I alternated loooong workout sessions (why not!? it’s vacation!) it took us a while to get out of the room, which was why cooking for them was better than making them wait to dine out with us. As you probably guessed by now, I got acai bowls from Choice most of the time. Kyle did most days too, but he also got smoothies and baked goods from the cafe in our lobby.
I had the second half of yesterday’s acai bowl to start the day, as well as a bomb.com bar (also from Choice).
The bomb.com bar is described as a healthy chocolate-drizzled shortbread cookie. It has cashews, goji berries, maple syrup, coconut oil, cacao nibs, and himalayan salt. Yes. Please.
It tastes like the best bar ever. The combo of coconut oil and cacao (on top) with the cashew and goji inside is ahhhhhmazing. Just like the maca ball I got at Choice, I vowed to get more of these before leaving, too.
After some pool time, we packed up the car to drive to Tamura’s.
It’s a wine & liquor store, but is know for having the BEST POKE in Maui. That may seem weird for a liquor store, but you gotta trust the locals (and all the yelp reviews – those don’t lie). Kyle’s friend told us about Tamura’s but Yelp is my security blanket regardless of recommendations.
Maui is an island after all…so access to fresh fish is easier to come by than here on the main land. If you have a fisherman to hook you up, then you are in business. And look at all that poke!! Wow wow wow.
It sells out by the afternoon/evening though so you have to go early if you want the full selection (which is the reason we went at 11 even though we were getting it for dinner that night).
Onthe way home we swung by Choice because Kyle wanted an acai bowl for lunch. I decided to get their daily kale salad for lunch for me. If you can’t read that label, it says “curly kale, carrot, bell pepper, cucumber, and cabbage tossed in a lemon tahini dressing. Heck yeah!
Plus the most $$$$ kale chips I’ve ever purchased.
The kids hydrated while we waited for Kyle’s powabunga bowl and then we went home to feast.
I polished off both in entirety. As you do.
Uhhhhh…we may have over ordered for dinner. 😀
We made our own poke bowls since I had avo and rice already.
In addition to the seaweed salad, we got salmon, ahi ninja, ahi ginger, and ahi sunrise.
We both agreed that the best was the sunrise. After that, it was all pretty much equally delish. I thought the ginger was great, but Kyle wasn’t as into it. The salmon was another favorite for me, but I think Kyle thought the ninja was his number two.
Really, it was all good though, and I was not too sad that we had leftovers to polish off the next day for lunch.
V took a while to fall asleep so P ended up passing out in our bed. He had headphones on because we wanted to watch The Sopranos. We are tearing through the show. Can’t stop won’t stop. On to Season 2!
Oooh what a five star food day that was! I can’t even deal when i get a kale salad that is not properly massaged and comes as a pile of dry kale with a dribble of dressing over it- thankfully looks like choice cafe got it right for you! And yeah, wow, those are some pricey kale chips but they do sound totally amazing.
Seriously the best meals i have had come from random hard to find places off the beaten path- that looks like a crazy poke assortment, and totally brilliant to make and add the fresh rice yourself.
I was surprised and happy to find that seaweed salad in the freezer section of the asian grocery store! Just had to defrost it :))
Whoa who would have thought!!?!?
poke’s my absolute fave. i also just wanted to say that you have such a beautiful family. :’D
Thank you!
