Philly: Veg Eats

Sweet Freedom Bakery is Philadelphia’s first (and only) allergen friendly bakery.

It’s on South Street (between Broad and 15th).

The sign says it all right – vegan, soy free, egg free, kosher, gluten free, peanut free, corn free, no refined sugar, casein free, wheat free…you get the point.  Basically, they have delicious baked treats for people with wacky GI systems (like me!).

They were featured on the Cooking Channel’s Food(ography) and the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.  Cool huh!

So I went a little crazy. 🙂

Here’s a full list of what they offer (ps they ship too…dangerous!!!).

And here’s what I got:

  • Samoa cupcakes x2
  • Chocolate covered cake balls x2 (in vanilla & chocolate)
  • Chocolate chip cookie sandwich with vanilla frosting

I put everything in a box to take home with me, crossing my fingers that they would make it through another day in the hotel fridge and a cross-country flight.

It took unimaginable self-restraint to not order one of everything.  Especially the magic bars.  I’m still dreaming of them.

Oddly enough, all that drooling over cupcakes, whoopie pies, brownies and cookies, burned out my sweet tooth.  And I hadn’t even eaten anything!  I was hungry but had no idea what I was in the mood for, I just knew it wasn’t anything in the baked good/pastry category.

Poor Kyle.  Indecisive Elise is one of the worst sides of my personality.  I begged him to just make a decision for me, but he saw right through that trap and kept mum.  Smart husband.  In the end, I wound up at a place I had made a mental note to check out when we passed it earlier in the day.

Hip City Veg is brand new and their food is 100% plant based.  It’s cozy, with only a few small tables and stools seats along the window.

Their menu isn’t available online yet, so I took a photo of the to-go flier so you could see what they offer.

Pretty cool right?  I’m looking at you udon noodle salad.

The groothie is basically a green monster, but it’s constantly churning in one of those big frozen lemonade machines.  And they don’t add any sweeteners to it, so it’s pure produce.

Because I wasn’t starving, I figured a smoothie would be perfect.  And I really wanted something green.  Hellooo Groothie.

Cold.  Kale.  Banana.  Yes.  Please.

Kyle ordered a veggie quiche from Serafina across the street and we sat and ate and people watched.

Here are a few other hippie highlights (and some allergen friendly) options in the city:

Le Bus Bakery

One word: bread, bread, bread, bread, bread.

Cake & The Beanstalk

They have more than sweets, but the savory options aren’t exactly plentiful.

Those sound like some great places! I’m surprised there’s only one allergen friendly bakery though, but at least there’s one!

oh my gosh, that cookie sandwich is calling my name!!

i was googling “portobello mushroom” recipes the other day and it came up with a restaurant (up here in Portland) called Portobello that is a vegan restaurant and i thought that the next time you venture up this way, maybe it could be on your list to try 🙂 the menu looks tasty.

btw: i got the cookbook and my next week off, i’m trying some recipes! can’t wait.

There are! I’m very lucky! Which I guess is why I thought it was so odd that Philly only has one!

I can’t even express how helpful it was to read this post. I’m newly on a low FODMAP diet AND find myself going to Philly this week for work so your suggestions have given me a place to start when I think about meals out (and lack of control). Thank you!
