Party time weekends

February weekends have been packed.  Priority numero uno was Patty-cakes’ 3rd birthday.  We had a small park gathering the weekend before his birthday and then celebrated the big 3 the entire following week.  It was seriously a never ending fiesta thanks to the staggered visits from grandparents and whatnot.  I mean he only got a handful of presents but since we opened one a day it definitely made it a full on affair.

Zoo day with good friends.  P is showing “three” fingers because he put three coins in AND he’s turning three years old.  This visit was before the tragic accident that happened a week later.  I’m still super saddened by it.  We did have the good fortune of seeing an aardvark get his annual physical (they have the vet open to public viewing with glass windows into it).  P knows way too much about medical equipment and procedures and monitoring and it was hilarious fielding his Qs while the other parents listened on.  It was the same kind of reaction we got from the medical assistant at his own 3 year well child doctor’s appointment.  They were explaining things to him in a dumbed down way and he was like “oh sorry it’s called a blood pressure machine”.  He says “oh sorry” when he’s trying to politely correct me all the time.  “Oh sorry mama, it’s a rocket ship not a pyramid.”  My bad, dude.

Feeding the ducks at the arbo is the easiest afternoon activity now that the weather is nicer.  It’s a way to get out of the house that can be as long or short of a trip as I want.  And it’s ever so conveniently located next to WF.  Winning.

P goes “fishing” with sticks he finds along the path and we bring allergy friendly treats for him to share with the ducks.  They usually end up in his mouth more than the water which is probably for the best because I doubt you’re supposed to feed them.

My bestie’s bebe is going to be besties with my bebe.  See?  They are already forming a girl band.

Happy birthday big boy.

A labor of love to be sure but his excitement was beyond rewarding enough.  He was thrilled.  I may do a photo tutorial if anyone wants to see how I did this.  It wasn’t too too hard to be honest.  It was medium hard and since the rest of his party was just low key park time, I felt like this was one place worth investing some effort to make it uniquely special and not just an average play date.

He is really into Thomas (like 99% of the 2+ year old crowd is these days) and we scored this hand me down train table to surprise him.  I’d been scouring the recycle kid sites since Christmas for tracks and all that jazz so I ended up getting an amazing deal.  It’s been hiding in the closet upstairs for a month.

We strategically set it up while he was napping on Super Bowl Sunday and when he woke up he was beside himself with delight.  We ended up watching the whole football game because he was entertaining himself the rest of the day with the trains.  And it’s been that way ever since!!  For weeks now, he just plays and plays and plays.  It’s adorable listening to the fun little scenarios he makes up.  He does voices for the different trains and everything.  So cute.

Baking for a brunch date.  My best gal was in town so we reunited with another high school friend and let all our kids romp around the house together while we attempted to eat breakfast.  P made pumpkin muffins from Danielle Walker’s cookbook Against All Grain.  I didn’t take a photo of the final product but they tasted good to me.

I made P pancakes with chocolate “chippies” for his birthday breakfast and after a few he said he wanted plain ones.  Ha!  What kid rejects chocolate chips?  [One who has had them only twice before?]  I don’t know…clearly not my genes.

Working on dada’s Valentine.  My little arteest.

The broccoli harvest 🙂

I’m cooking with it this week and I’m so excited!

We basically never go out to restaurants with the kids nowadays (or without them – ha) because it’s not exactly a picnic so this brunch was such a treat.  With P’s allergies and V’s desire to wiggle out of any kind of containment, there’s very little that’s relaxing about eating in public. But Kyle’s parents were in town and so we all hit up Crepeville for a Valentine’s Day breakfast.  As you know by now, Crepeville is my fave spot in Davis.  So much bang for your buck.  The food is great, the staff hustles like nothing else, they are family/kid friendly, and you get really huge portions.  What’s not to love?!

Unable to decide between sweet and savory I opted for two choices.  I got the Midtown Benedict (the dish I always always always order) and a chocolate strawberry muffin.  Both were exceptional.  They toasted the muffin and it was nice and crispy on the split open sides which was a cool way to enjoy it.  I took some home so I had the rest of the muffin with lunch.

Kyle got the special of the day, which he couldn’t stop raving about.  I think little missy wanted in on the grub.

I fed both babes before we went but ordered a fruit plate for them to share.  She housed the banana and he finished off most of the rest, both as happy as could be.  Pattycakes definitely felt it was a special treat.

She’s almost a walking girl.  In fact, by the time this post actually gets finished she may well be!

More frolicking in the arbo with my people.  It’s a good thing all the plants have signs detailing their species names and info because he asks about ev-er-y-thing.  Sponge ‘o knowledge.

Awww…Happy Birthday to P! My little peanut was due right around his birthday (on Feb 14th) and we considered having a little celebration for her (a “0 day party”, they called them in the NICU), but we were too exhausted and lame to throw anything together 🙂 It sounds like P’s birthday week was a success!

It’s not lame! She won’t remember so do what makes you feel happy (and if that’s rest and catch up, then that’s the winner). And by “rest” I mean not putting yourself out. I doubt anything feels super restful at this moment for you. XXX
