A few days of hippie bowls

Going into the weekend I had all my meals ready to go.  Starting with Thursday night, I made a typical hippie bowl.   If I had to choose a combination of ingredients to eat forevermore it would probably be these: quinoa, carrots, corn, seitan, avocado     I recently got a question about the ratio of grain to veg to protein in my “hippie bowl” type meals.  In all honesty, I don’t consciously compose them with a specific ratio in mind, but if I had to guess I’d say it is pretty much 1:1:1.  Sometimes… Read more >

Quickie dinner

I have a formula that I use to make dinners in as little time as possible, but it relies on food prep.  I always prep ahead of time.  Have I convinced you to do the same yet?  I feel like a broken record, but the posts that seem the most basic and obvious to me still get the most follow up questions. So.  About that “formula.” Carb: usually a whole grain like quinoa or rice, but sometimes I opt for noodles, and sometimes I just turn to bread Fat: avocado, nut, oil, something Green: veggie… Read more >

Ingredient deal breakers

Look at all these powders! I’m a mad scientist! [not really] My head was in the clouds when I was making these oats.  The amount of cocoa powder was nearly double what I ordinarily use, which made it the color of…well…tar.  I tried to balance it out by adding more oats, which made it look like chocolate at least, but resulted in a pretty monstrous breakfast.  Then I went and increased it’s volume even more by adding some protein powder. I don’t know who makes it, what’s in it, or where it’s from because my… Read more >

Eating in & out

This past week has been work heavy, which is why I’ve been doing more recipe posts.  But my sister hates recipe posts prefers other material (and isn’t afraid to let me know it), so here’s a recap of my weekend. Starting with Friday…    I made peanut butter. I made a spinach and pumpkin seed pate. I made bread.   I made pancakes.   I ate pancakes. I made seitan. I made tofu.   And after spending most of the day in the kitchen, Kyle and I opted for a dinner out.  We walked to… Read more >

Sunday night family dinner

Kyle and I made a resolution this year to sit down to a real dinner together every Sunday night.  It may be hard on the weekends that I work, but we will do our best. Family dinner #1 – roasted broccoli, quinoa and barley, Field Roast smoked tomato loaf. I put 1 cup dry quinoa and 1 cup dry barley in the rice cooker before we headed out to play tennis together. I left it on the “keep warm” setting until it was time for dinner. Then I fluffed it up before serving.   The… Read more >
