Oregon and Idaho I

Another June trip to Idaho in the books!

This time we drove up to visit Kyle’s parents with a stop in Sunriver first.

If you haven’t been, it is crazy beautiful. I highly recommend. We rented a place with another family and had the best time.

Sunriver Brewing Company has a restaurant right in the heart of the village, and despite the wait being obnoxiously long, we still enjoyed it very much. After 8+ hours in the car we were all going a little loco, so it was good to have our friends arrive and join us.

I got a burger with bacon and tillamook (the only cheese Oregon seems to have on any menu) and it was EXACTLY what I was craving after oh so many car snacks. They have GF buns, too. Plus they let me do half and half with my fries because I couldn’t decide between regular and sweet potato. The regular were better by the way. Not what I would have expected.

My friend got nachos. Just a small little serving. šŸ˜›

Once we got all settled in our rental and got the kids in bed, we started drinking…

Highlight of the weekend was discovering drinks that get me buzzed and don’t give me a headache!!

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it here on the blog but I basically quit drinking a few years back. Wine, champagne and prosecco all give me instant headaches and beer sometimes makes my gut feel bad the next day, so it just stopped being worth it.

Then my girlfriend infused vodka (FIVE DIFFERENT WAYS) and made her own flavored simple syrups (!!) and brought them all with her and OMG her mixology was totally awesome. She was inventing cocktails on the fly with club soda and lime/lemon juice and it was e v e r y t h i n g. So now I’m obsessed. Watch out.

The kids had a blast sleeping in the same room. And our rental had board games and bikes for eight, so there was never a reason to be bored.

All four of us took our time in the mornings…exercising and coffee-ing while the kids snuggled up to Disney Junior.

Not too bad of a view…

Chillin’

The best part of our rental place though, was the proximity to the SHARC (which is the rec center with multiple pools, slides and splash pads, etc).

I was living my best vacation self, eating all the fried things, and very happy about it.

I actually ordered a few different things to share with the kids. And by “share” I mean eat 80% of. My thievery was caught on film.

I don’t have any pics of the water fun because my phone was safely tucked away in the swim bag, but suffice it to say, the SHARC is a total blast. They have indoor and outdoor areas and pools for all ages. The kids weren’t tall enough for the big slides, but they went down the one kids one approximately 6498707 times. And demanded an adult caught them at the bottom each time. So that’s where I was.

By the time we got back I was exhausted from the sun and super ready to rehydrate.

We kept things simple and grilled at our place for dinner, letting the kids run around the yard.

This was my first White Claw, which I have seen allllll over the place. It was excellent. I hope I can find them easily back in nor cal.

The next morning was much of the same.

I listened to a new podcast (Rachel Hollis) while on my morning run and the whole thing couldn’t have been better for my soul.

After coffee and breakfast, we set off exploring the Sunriver property…there is a lot to do besides swimming. There are parks, basketball and tennis courts, an observatory, mini golf, frisbee golf, bounce houses and rock climbing, bike paths, etc. And that’s not even touching on the water sports. Or adult activities. I am hoping this can become a tradition that we continue for summers to come because the kids are definitely aging into stuff that will make vacations more and more fun.

Of course we wound up at the SHARC again for the rest of the afternoon.

Once again, the kids and I split three meals…I was trying to get something green into our diets (even if it was covered in cheese and creamy dressing). They love Caesar salad just as much as I do, though, so we were all happy about it. I didn’t actually want any of the hot dog though, so that was all for them. The fries, however, were an even steven three way split…basically measured to the exact number.

She wasn’t into the lazy river, but P was, and so we ended up spending an AMAZING amount of time together in a double tube just chatting away lap after lap. It was without a doubt, the highlight of my vacation.

More new boozy discoveries!!

Kyle bought me this can of boochcraft in Davis and I can’t believe it took me so long to try it out. Just goes to show you how good the other drink options were! I liked this a lot, but don’t think I could have more than one. Which is perfect because at 7% ABV I don’t think I need any more than that! I’m excited to try more of their flavors.

On our final night we went back to Sunriver Brewing Company for dinner.

Here is Kyle’s fried chicken with succotash, which he totally raved about.

The kids chose burgers (and their 700th serving of fries) which were almost worth stopping drawing.

And I went with the Moroccan bowl, which was meh. I swapped the za’atar yogurt for feta cheese, but that one swap seemed to throw off the rest of the dish because they forgot the fried chickpeas, almonds, and dried apricots. So basically it was just rice and tabouli. Like I said, meh. I didn’t realize it until way too late, so it was just bad luck.

We did some port tasting (and cards against humanity) once the kids were in bed and soaked up the last night in Sunriver.

We were slow to pack up the next morning, and managed to squeeze in a family bike ride before loading back into the car for another looooong drive up to Idaho.

I can’t believe we are able to do things like family bike rides now! It’s a weird thing to simultaneously wish for your kids to stay young and not grow up too fast, but also enjoy how much you can do now that they are older.
