Final day in Chi town! (Do people call it that? Am I like the people who call SF “frisco” and think it’s a thing and everyone else from the Bay Area cringes in agony?)
Here’s a shot of our gym on the 30th floor. As you can see, the weather was still sluggish.
Kyle had a weird reaction (chills/night sweats) the previous night and swore it was from the insanely indulgent food and basically refused to join me at Do-Rite Donuts the next day. I gave him plenty of crap for it (because 99% of the time I’m the healthier eater between the two of us) but then accompanied him to his choice.
Acai bowls. Again.
I mean I loooove acai bowls, but the idea of a vegan and gluten free donut is something you don’t come across every day!!! And they make donut and FRIED CHICKEN sandwiches!!! Gah! I’m still a little sad about it, clearly.
Anyway, I got the same acai bowl as the day before and it was just as good as ever. Kyle got the cacao acai bowl and said it was basically the same. I think it has a different kind of granola, but aside from that I don’t doubt there was very much of a differentiation. Side note: the granola at Hi-Vibe is super good. It’s a grain free, gluten free, dairy free granola (which you can purchase for way too much $$$ in my opinion).
We also had planned to go to the Purple Pig for an early dinner (tapas style thing) before our date night out, but then Kyle again begged for greens (not pork). So like the good wife I am, I abandoned my foodie plans and accompanied him to WF.
He got grilled broccoli and a pea/mint/green bean salad.
I made an arugula, spiralized zucchini, feta, bacon, pecan, artichoke salad with balsamic vinaigrette from the salad bar.
And then we both shared this salad which satisfied my seemingly insatiable tahini cravings.
I realize it’s not very foodie of me to end up at WF when traveling, and believe me, this was a big discussion that we had. But the whole point of being on vacation is that you can do (and eat) whatever you want. And sometimes that’s not hitting up every trendy hot spot. Sometimes that means sleeping in, skipping breakfasts, and just eating what sounds good. At least we made it to the Girl and the Goat!!
DATE NIGHT!!!!
OMG was this ever fun. We laughed and laughed and laughed and my cheeks hurt by the end of the night because I was having so much fun.
And then we came home and went to town on the chocolate stash…because why not!? Vacation lyfe, ya know?? Also, I didn’t really want to bring peanut butter home to this guy, despite how great he’s been doing with OIT. [I have an update on that for another time!]
We went to bed dreaming of our little monsters – so excited to see them after a few days away!
Of course they’d been having THE TIMES OF THEIR LIVES while we were away at camp grandma and bumpa. 🙂
They hung out with their cousins and did all kinds of fun things.
For breakfast I had this granola bar which was total nostalgia! I used to get this allllll the time in NYC. The bars are as big as bricks and have every seed and dried fruit you can think of.
So so good. Oats and brown rice syrup and hemp and sesame and coconut and dried cranberries and pepitas and and and just about every bite is a little different but delicious just the same.
And then a while later I opened up these Bliss bars from Chicago Raw. As awesome as it is flying without kids, it’s still not fun to sit cramped in a square foot of space for hours on end. I had podcasts to listen to and dozed off for a bit, but mostly talked with Kyle and just relaxed before the chaos (I mean JOY!) of parenting was back in full swing.
These were super, by the way, and I am happy I have a lot of them.
Oh hi mountains!
Oh man, I totally know the “why does my body hate me “ feeling after an over the top meal the night before and it really sucks. And ya gotta do what you gotta do to fix it.
Vacation = eat what you want when you want. Mc donald’s fries? Sure! Raw vegan gluten free kale popsicles? Why not! So if whole foods has what you want then WTH not go to whole foods?
No judgement allowed on vacation.
Obviously you will make this an annual excursion and do gf doughnuts next time :))
Those whole foods granola bars were my downfall for YEARS. Unfortunately too chewy with too many whole nuts for my $$$ delicate dental work now but i would do anything for one of those again!
