My neck AND my back

Remember that horribly inappropriate song??

Well, today I had an appt with an Osteopaedic MD who specializes in the spine.  I’ll get into the deets later, but rest assured, I’ll be making some changes so I don’t end up looking like this by my 30th birthday.

Severe Kyphosis

I started the day with coffee.

Doesn’t that beautiful foam make you wanna dive right into it?  Flowers for Algernon is my latest read, btw, although my wait to see the MD was so short I didn’t even need it!  NYU Joint Disease knows how to treat their patients RIGHT (I’ve never been seen so quickly, it was such a pleasurable visit).

My appointment was early, so I was home in time for a Sin Dawg b-fast.

IMG_3875IMG_3876

Dang this stuff is good!  I had to exercise ALL self control not to polish off the entire roll in one sitting.

After my bread baby was semi-digested, I went to the gym for some cardio.  I left sweatier than normal, so I was in a great mood.

Lunch was a mini-Mediterranean feast, packed with yummy flavors.

IMG_3844IMG_3845

Falafel and roasted red pepper hummus – aka chickpeas and MORE chickpeas.

IMG_3898IMG_3918

I munched on some almonds while waiting for my sister’s plane to land.  SO excited!!  And if anyone is curious, the citrus flavor Kombucha was really good, so it gets the hippie stamp of approval.  I was nervous it was going to be so tart my lips would pucker after one sip, but it was nice at mind.  I didn’t really taste much citrus at all…I think I am going to make it my goal to try ALL the Kombucha/Synergy flavors.  I have tried about 5-6 so far…

Anyways, it took my sister a good 2 hours to get from the airport to Penn station, so my tum was still gurgling for more food.

IMG_3915IMG_1200

Kyle had a leftover roll from last night’s dinner…poor thing didn’t stand a chance!  I enjoyed it with some hummus while talking Marie through the LIRR/Jamaica station chaos.  Once she was Manhattan-bound, I hit the road to meet up with her at Penn Station (which was another 2 hour ordeal in and of itself…).  Sometimes the simplest plans just don’t unfold the way you think they will.

It was 6 by the time we made it back to the apt.  Le sigh.

Once Kyle got home, we decided that a WF dinner was MORE than necessary (Central Park provided a nice summery ambiance).

IMG_3922

A pretty standard trip, no?  Falafel balls (again), chickpea/edamame salad, lentil/couscous salad, 2 broccoli florets, and a few spinach leaves.

Now that I think about it, it really looks like I was trying to trick myself into thinking I was eating a salad :)

Let’s pile errrthang on top of some green-age and call it a salad, yes??

IMG_3921

Here’s Marie’s WF swag (since she got some balls too, we split a tub of hummus with our dinners).

IMG_3925IMG_3925

Creamy, chickpea bliss.

Kyle went with a confusing choice (given the fact that it was 800 degrees out with 95% humidity).

IMG_3924

Grilled corn on the cob and arroz con pollo.  I was already sweating bullets, but Kyle said “bring it!”

IMG_3927IMG_3926

The non-vegans enjoyed some chocolate cake, while my dessert came in the form of chickpeas…I MAY have licked the tub of hummus (just a little, though)  😉

After dinner, the night took an interesting turn.  Rather than go home, we strolled by my bestie, Jess’ apartment…annnd next thing I know, this is happening.

IMG_3928

There were a few too many beers pitchers that led up to this point.  A few things to note:

(a) The drink above is actually a fish bowl

(b) I’m ridiculously pale

(c) I’m wearing the same outfit I sweat through 6 hours earlier (ew)

(d) I’m the only one actually drinking in the photo

(e) Apparently I didn’t feel as though a fish bowl provided enough DRANK, seeing as I am double fisting it

The last three probably explained my lack of back pain as the night went on…

IMG00253IMG_3931

Anyways, we partied into the wee hours of the morning (initially we were confused because it was light outside when we left the bar – but it was just the huge spotlights shining on us because they were filming this in the street outside the bar).  I still have 3 more days of fun with my sister!!!

So here’s the dealio with my spine: my x-rays all looked normal [insert sigh of relief here], but the doctor did say I had a “giraffe neck.”  Ummm…what?  First of all, I’m not tall, in fact, by America’s Next Top Model’s standards normal standards, I’m short.  And yet, he actually told me I have the longest cervical spine section he’s ever seen.  I had to practice all restraint to not blurt out TWSS.  Anyways, crazy long neck aside, apparently my range of motion is pretty piss poor, so I’ll be engaging in some physical therapy for the next few weeks.  Who knows when the heck I’m going to find the time for that…

That song was one song I refused to listen to! It grossed me out beyond belief!

Sin dawg + falafel + bread + hummus – would you please quit posting all of these. My stomach is getting jealous of yours!

I really love the fact that you’re drinking out of the fishbowl while holding another beer (?) in your hand. WELL DONE!!

You know in Africa long necks are a good thing – you could literally be the hummus Queen 😀

  5. Abby

You never specifically mention what’s in the fishbowl, and if you even say hummus, we need to have an intervention.

And good news your appt. went well! I had a “natural” doctor diagnose me with a very tired mind a few years ago…I think I would prefer a giraffe neck 🙂

  6. Shelby

You are the hummus queen! I love it! All the falafel, hummus dips, and chickpea salads. Mmm. Amazing.

I have a messed up neck too! It doesn’t have a curve in it, which I guess is a problem…

  7. VeggieGirl

Yikes! Hang in there with your neck.

We need to catch up, ma’am!!

  8. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

I’m sorry bout your neck…hang in there. Maybe some yoga, really gentle stretching for your back and neck? Just a thought.

Double fisting drinks. A girl after my own heart!!! However, I have not drank in 3.5 yrs. Back in the day though….watchout. I think I was a triple fister! LOL

  9. janetha

  10. Hangry Pants

Make sure you warm up the sin dawg next time. 😀

You and your friends look like you had a wonderful time!

  11. elise

bahaha…your comment made me laugh out loud. dont worry, the cross section shot was pre-warming to show off the layers. once it came out of the toaster there was little time for photos. DKB is a hand to mouth food, if you know what i mean…

ok HUGE favor: coffee + foam tutorial!

-what type of coffee machine would you recommend?
-HOW do you make such delicious froth?
    – HELP! i am a coffee LOVER, and had a super automatic espresso maker, and have to downgrade as i had to leave my machine halfway across the world ( long story!)… anyways. i need help!

    thanks girl

    xo

hey lisa!! coffee tutorial? no prob!! this post: http://hungryhungryhippie.com/2009/01/21/don’t-judge-a-fig-by-it’s-cover/ has a lot of the deets. basically i use a regular (braun) coffee maker for the coffee and an appliance called the caffe froth for the foam. the frother is pretty cheap and you can prob find on amazon (or whatever other coffee/kitchen appliance online retailer). its pretty cheap and WAY worth it. i use it every day, it cleans so quick and easy, and i literally cant have coffee any other way now. we have a coffee maker, so while the java is brewing i get my froth ready on the side. just pour in the milk (lower fats froth more), pump a few times and then heat it and add to a mug of coffee. you have to heat it after you pump it, bc it doesnt seem to foam as well when warm. (all these instructions were in the box but it really is very simple). hope that helps!! i know first hand how necessary it is to start the day with a perfect cup of caffeine. 😀

Ha ha ha. Love it! The cocktail photo with accompanying notes is genius. I love looking at “night before” photos and noticing all the random/hilarious aspects of them!
Looks like fun times with your sister.
Oh and I love hummus so much but chocolate will always win my heart 🙂

  19. brianna

and you aren’t pale, you are the perfect color (i’m the same way) – we are skin cancer free! 🙂

glad the news is positive. isn’t it terrible when someone is saying something serious and ALL you can think is TWSS?? 🙂

  23. elise

  24. elise

  25. She-Fit

I have never seen those Sin Dawgs… they look great. I might just have to make me one 🙂

  26. MarathonVal

Ok, I know you are perfectly happy having hummus for dessert, but you know Whole Foods has one of THE best vegan desserts ever right!??! The vegan chocolate mousse (found by the refrigerated prepackaged salads and that stuff) is TO DIE FOR. Please try it immediately. You can thank me later 😉

  27. elise

omg, that stuff is amazing. ive had it several times before and its literally like betty crocker frosting straight out of the tub!! i actually checked that section before leaving but it was totally picked over and the person was there restocking and i was too lazy to butt in while she was at work. but, i def agree with your description: TO DIE FOR!!
