Monday’s sweet tooth

Thanks to my whole foods gift card, I was able to replenish my NuNaturals stevia…

IMG_7162

This frothy treat is coffee with coconut milk, cinnamon, and NuNaturals.  Luff.

IMG_7155

Brunch was a bit unconventional…I felt like grilled cheese, so I got crafty and mashed together extra firm Nasoya tofu and nutritional yeast.

IMG_7156

It looks kinda bizarre, but tasted yum-may.

IMG_6970IMG_5782

Currently there is a pretty bomb deal going on at Whole Foods with Steaz (when you buy a 4-pack you get another for free), so obviously I went for it.  My sweet tooth took over for the rest of the afternoon…

IMG_7148

Holy sweetness.

Dates.  PB.  Fruit.  Insulin?  (kidding)

After the snack-attack wore off, I really really reallllllly wanted to go for a walk.  It’s moments like this that make me super frustrated with the East Coast.  Something as simple as an outside stroll shouldn’t be such a difficult feat.  And yet, guess what ended up happening?  I walked. TWO miles. On. A. Treadmill.

If that isn’t the definition of ridiculous, I don’t know what is.  After I left the gym, I stopped in at the ‘Bucks and got a soy misto

IMG_7173

It makes the hippie in me cringe a bit when I don’t use my traveler’s mug, but I was already out, so obviously I didn’t have it on hand…

Eventually, dinnah time rolled around.

Seitan, sweet ‘taters, and broccoli drowned in OrganicVille’s BBQ sauce

IMG_7111

This trio is one of my faves.  It’s colorful and covers several food groups (and I could drench it in BBQ sauce).

IMG_6392

Don’t think I’m crazy, but I tossed chopped apples and carrots in Bragg’s apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, and agave syrup.  It’s admittedly bizarre, but I really liked it.  So if you are comfortable trusting my weird a$$ taste buds, try it yourself.

IMG_6391

The zing of the vinegar and the sweetness of the fruit and agave were such an interesting pair.

Home made ice cream!  Ok not exactly.  I simply made extra smoothie from my last few batches to freeze and save for late night dessert snackage purposes.

Dates with peanut butter? What a great idea!! And so if freezing extra smoothie. I’m a big sorbet fan, so frozen smoothie would be right up my alley!

  2. The Foodie Diaries

omg i feel like your weird ass taste buds and my weird ass tastebuds are WATB (weird ass taste bud, obviously) soulmates. i marinated apples in a balsamic + agave mix this weekend, and now i wish my concoction had featured carrots and manzana cider vinnnnnn

  3. Serena

Mmm that looks good 🙂 I love mixing fried cabbage with chopped apples 🙂 yum!

  4. KathyR

Those little frozen smoothie-creams look good. What a great idea!

  5. sarah @ syrupandhoney

yeah can we talk about how ridic this weather is? i saw a girl trying to run outside on the ice recently and it looked so sad, but at the same time i was like oh i feel ya. the ice has diminished enough where i am that i’ve been able to run outside the past couple days. thank goodness because i was about to punch someone in the face.

  6. karla

    hi 🙂

if i may ask, what is that bread you had for brunch called?
    thanks!

  7. Olga

Dates with peanut butter are INCREDIBLE. Really, it rivals the banana & PB combo.

  8. *Andrea*

if i could describe a perfect day of eats this would be it!!! starbucks, nut butter, fruits, tofu.. only thing missing is chocolate/carob 😉

  9. Michal

Nom nom nom! Dates with peanut butter is one of my favorite sweet snacks 🙂

  10. Susan

I’m diggin’ your sweet eats! I also wanted to let you know I took the plunge and purchased Bragg’s Liquid Aminos after becoming obsessed with it at WF. Best decision evahhhh

  11. Holly

ohhhh i love the idea of freezing smoothies for a treat later! and i am loving the tofu + nut yeast (which i bought and have still yet to touch). and i am loving the coffee concoction. and i love walking, although not on a treadmill. and i love you.

have a fab day lady 🙂

  12. Holly

p.s. steaz is perhaps the best name for a drink ever.

  13. ksgoodeats

I’m thinking the next time I’m at the foodie’s Disneyland I’ll be picking up Steaz. What’s your favorite flavor? I will also be picking up some nut. yeast because your rando food cravings sound mighty fine!

  14. elleneatsbeats

I COMPLETELY understand both the hate for the cold weather and the cringing at no travel mug. I am so over this northeastern winter, so obviously we’re getting a snow storm tomorrow. lovely. I always feel naked when caught out and wanting a hot drink, and no travel mug in hand. Sometimes though, the warm beverage just overcomes the hippie in me!

  15. Angharad

Okay let’s talk about those dates and how I need some with gallons of pb and NOW. Yum.
The walking thing sounds frustrating. Come hang out in minnesota for a while and try going for a “run” with me. Laughs a-plenty….

  16. Katie

What a good idea to freeze leftover smoothies. I like your sweet tooth.

  17. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine

Love love love seitan. So filling! That Braggs/apple combo does sound strangely intriguing. I’ll have to give it a go sometime when I’m feeling adventurous. And the frozen smoothies look store-bought- so pretty!

  18. snackface

I should really just make my own damn seitan. I love it!

You are so right about how obnoxious the East Coast can be. It really does make seemingly normal things impossible–AKA trudging through torrential snow to make it to class/the gym/whatevah.

I forget. Do you use the gums for your smoothies? If so, do you recommend them? I’m debating a purchase.

    Miss you!

  19. Courtney

Yum–I love homemade sorbet 🙂 I always make it when I want it, but I LOVE the idea of having it when you want it without the issue of having to clean the blender, lol. Did you thaw that “ice cream” for a while before the photo? It looks like it isn’t rock hard, which is awesome! Did it just not freeze hard? Or was it thawed?

    Courtney

  20. Adam

The veggie/apple mix sounds so interesting i might just have to attempt it tonight considering i caught something from one of the hundreds of sick ppl at work and need the b-carotene + a-cider vinegar…never thought to combine those ingreds! I’ll let you know how it works out!

  21. ethel

Would complaining that it’s raining in L.A. preventing me from an outdoor run be the same as your frustration of not being able to walk outside? … Prob not, huh?

Re your traveler’s mug, I’ve been thinking of purchasing one because I don’t like rushing with my coffee in the a.m.s before work. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to make up my mind when it comes to a) how cute the mug is, b) how much it costs and c) if it’s even going to do its job and keep my drink warm. Thoughts?

  22. BroccoliHut

I have some pretty crazy-a$$ tastebuds, so I def will be giving the apple-carrot dish a try:)

  23. Sarah

That smoothie looks great. Carrots and apples sound interesting too I may have to try your combo!

  24. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)

    medjools
    nut butter
    coffee

you hit my fave 3 food groups in 1 post 🙂

  25. rebecca lustig

    Mmm, lovin the sweetness 🙂

  26. Jenny

so you’re the one that stole my sweet tooth. I swear I have been craving sodium like a mad woman as of late. I don’t know who I am anymore!

  27. adrianna

that din looks perfect-o. will be copying that bbq, broc, and taters tom after work…

?–did you cook the carrots and apples? that salad look rather lovely; something i’d like to recreate!

  28. Jenna

Whatever is tasty to you… Then eat it 🙂

  29. katecooks

freezing smoothies?? you are genius girlie!!!

  30. jqlee

how is that steaz tea? i saw that deal at wf and i was going to get some but i hesitated.

  31. carolinebee

OMG are u drowning in snow right now?? I’m supposed to leave for TX today and I’m hoping it doesn’t get canceled 🙁
I totally feel u on the walking withdrawals! Sometimes I get the brilliant idea to walk home from the gym since I’m a little extra warm from the workout- and I get back with a beet red, chapped face….it’s really sexy…

  32. jenngirl

Your use of seasonings and flavors never ceases to amaze me. That carrot and apple snack is a combo I would never think of on my own!

  33. julie

i would TOTES be down for that apple cider + samic dish you got goin on thur. it slightly reminds me of a thanksgiving type dish. mmm i want thanksgiving to come back.

    …but mostly the summer…

..i hope you have off today. i know you do tomorrow 😉 woo hoo daaaaaaaate day!

  34. schacalieu

Have you ever marinated strawberries in balsamic with a bit of sugar??? Sooo good!

  35. Lara (Thinspired)

A WF gift card?! No fair! 😉
I have completely forgotten how delicious dates + PB can be. I must run out and buy some dates today!
I’ve been meaning to thank you for your detailed, informative comment on my Michael Pollan post. I really enjoyed reading your thoughts coming from the medical perspective!

  36. caronae

The frozen smoothie looks great, and apples and carrots are such a great combo!

  37. simplemoderngirl

saw you were drinking the tazo organic chai…have you noticed that the Bux sells whole leaf tea in reusable tins now?? I’ve worked on an organic tea farm…and let me say…the new whole leaf tea is a far cry better than what used to be sold. Plus it’s in sachets instead of the bleached paper! I love it! The new Orange Blossom (with green jasmine tea) is amazing! Try it as an iced tea lemonade (unsweetened) too!!

  38. elise

i did see that! they are pretty $$$ though 🙁 every time i have fresh tea leaves in a sachet i vow to never again have the bags, but then my wallet wins…

  39. elise

i adore the gums…xanthan has changed my smoothie makin’ life – DoOoOo it!!

  40. elise

it wasn’t thawed, it was hard as a rock. i had to let it sit for a while before digging in.

  41. elise

    not even a little bit.

get a contigo mug. they have them at costco or you can buy one online. i have gone through a million and one trying to find a good one, and these dont leak and keep your beverage hot hot hot.

  42. elise

wow. we ARE WATB twins. we should start a club. inaugural dinner soon? im going out of town next week, but oncei get back we HAVE to set a date. no excuses!!

  43. elise

you made me laugh out loud with the “punch someone in the face” comment…because it describes my feelings to a “t” 🙂

  44. elise

it was Whole Foods’ brand multi-grain sandwich thins

  45. elise

  47. elise

    no, they were raw.

  48. elise

this weather blows. forreals. i made that walk home from the gym mistake SEVERAL times when i first moved to the east coast. now i just sweat it out in my layers.

  49. elise

i like it. a lot. the orange tastes like a mimosa!

  50. elise

  51. Kristina T.

Hi Elise, I just wanted to tell you how much I adore your blog! :]
And also, I bought the NuNaturals liquid stevia (is that the one you use), I don’t think Im using it correctly. How many drops would you say is the equivalent to a packet of stevia? How much to you use?

    -Thanks!
