Mega (obnoxious) Monday

Oh my goodness, it’s only the DAY after Christmas and I’m already feeling completely bombarded with weight loss programs and get-in-shape tips for the new year.  The morning news is ridiculous.  Goals for January.  Jenny Craig ads.  Low fat leftover recipes.  Help!!

Dear 2012,

I will greet you in January with open arms, until then leave me alone.

Sincerely,

Elise

I’m not trying to sound like a scrooge…I (usually) love bringing health & fitness to the forefront of any discussion.  And yet I cannot stand to hear about resolutions to run a marathon and eat more fiber and set goals and blah blah blah already…it’s TOO SOON!!

On a completely opposite note, the patient who gave me vegan cookies yesterday had his family members bring more and then gave them all to me!

I really love being spoiled by patients.  Peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies pretty much guarantee favorite patient status for life.

The hospital’s A-team was in yesterday and the unit was SO FUN.  I still had a full patient load, but it was definitely more mellow and relaxed and I got to enjoy some QT with my fave coworkers.

And when I got off work, I was greeted with this!

Kyle cooked us a Christmas feast!  He did the same thing last year when I worked on the 25th – talk about an awesome tradition!

This year he made recipes from Terry Walters’ Clean Food.

Skillet Cornbread

Then for dessert I had an Argentinean Alfajor cookie.

It was a triple decker one with dulce de leche filling.

It.  Was.  Amazing.

How soon is too soon to discuss 2012 resolutions?

Are there any newer traditions you have with your family on Christmas?  Or have you been doing the same thing as long as you can remember?

What a peach of a husband you have 🙂 That’s so nice that he had dinner all ready and waiting for when you got home from work. Must be nice! I hope you had a nice Christmas
I agree with you about all the damn ads and commercials for weight loss. Give us some time to come out of our holiday comas before telling us we need to get into the gym and back to our bikini bodies. I like my newfound curves, thankyouverymuch!

  2. Red Deception

On Christmas night, M and I discuss our short and long-term goals for the following year. We ensure that they are measurable and realistic, which I think of often forgotten with “resolutions”. Then we write it on a piece of paper and exchange it – and we keep each other accountable. It’s a fun little tradition.

I can’t wait to make some New Year’s resolutions! This is the year I’m keeping them…including the resolution to blog more. I think that’s a healthy resolution I can definitely keep!
Those cookies…by the way…I love those. What a nice patient!
    Happy Holidays!
    Erin

I saw a ton of resolutions on blogs already, I’m still thinking about christmas! Way too fast! Maybe in a couple of days!

I totally know what you mean about being annoyed by the bombardment of weight loss, diet, and fitness ads around this time of year. I am all about health but I don’t think there should be such a craze to be stick thin this time of year (or anytime!).
My family and I definitely have set traditions each Christmas but we mix it up a bit each year which I appreciate!

  6. Tasha @ Dine & Dash

the commercials capitalizing on holiday weight gain guilt are annoying.
everyone obsessing over waking up at 6 am to burn off what they ate for christmas is double annoying.

the seitan sheperd’s pie looks awesome.

We’ve been doing the same tradition and same meal for as long as I can remember, and I love it that way. As for the resolutions, it’s obnoxious and it drives me nuts. As I was training a client this morning, it’s all they talked about. Enough is enough. HA!

Wow, what a GREAT hubby you have! Resolutions are ridiculous because they usually only last a few days, maybe a few weeks, then it’s back to the old ways! That’s why eating healthy and being active should be a year-long “resolution.” Sure, I pigged out yesterday, but it was still in moderation. Because who wants to eat like a lot of food, gain 10 pounds during the holidays, then have to lose it! So enjoy the junk, just over a longer period of time! (p.s. I got a box of See’s chocolates two weeks ago, and it’s still wrapped. If I unwrap it, my husband and daughter will devour it, and it’s for me. So it still sits on the kitchen counter, wrapped up in its pretty paper, and when I do open it, I will hide it so I can enjoy a piece a day for quite a while!)

As for traditions, big changes this year because of my father’s passing on December 2nd. So we had the WHOLE family here yesterday — only 21 people, but still, that’s a lot! And it was a blast! A bit noisy and chaotic at times with our three grandchildren (4, 3 and 2 years of age), but we survived and enjoyed a blessed day!!

And when I say whole family, I mean my husband’s family as well as mine! Usually we split it up, one family for breakfast and gift opening, and the other family for gift opening and dinner! But we sure had fun together this year!

And we also finally decided to pick names among the adults so we only had to buy 2 presents per couple instead of 8! When you get to be our age, who needs more stuff?

I think I like new traditions!!!

im liking new traditions too..the old ones were great, but not as practical since i dont live with my parents anymore and have two families instead of one. thats so great that you were able to combine sides – and i’d never refer to that many people as “only 21”!!!

ps keep hiding the sees! i am the same way. <-- hoarder alert 🙂

those cookies look great & your christmas feast does too! what a great surprise to come home to!

yeah i’d say day after christmas is too soon! at least give it a couple days after the holidays. maybe friday would be a good day to start thinking about what you want to do… or, you know just know what you want to do and do it now instead of waiting until the new year!

The day after Christmas is definitely a little soon for resolutions, but I’ve been hearing about them for a week or two already! It cracks me up that people make such a HUGE deal about “getting healthy” every year. In reality, it should be a consistent lifestyle…not merely a ‘get-fit-quick’ plan. Oh well.
Anyways, your feast looks delicious! And Uncle Eddies cookies are my favorite. Mmm… 🙂

Xmas is time to indulge – everything is healthy in moderation, INCLUDING moderation…. ah wine, you are worth the morning after.

Makes me angry all the “New Year Detox” crap – just enjoy yourself!

  14. Caity @ Moi Contre La Vie

I love that your husband cooked dinner, that’s just too sweet. And I couldn’t agree more with you on the resolutions. I resolve to not make “real” resolutions this year! 🙂

  15. Carolyn @HealthKitten.com

I’m with you on the “it’s too soon!” with the health/resolution talk. I’m still trying to come to terms with my weekend of indulgence! 😉

That shepherd’s pie looks amazing! I made a lentil/mushroom shepherd’s pie for our Christmas evening dinner. Was sooooooo good! I really need to pick up that cookbook and I think that recipe just might do it!
