So now that I got the major drama out of the way, I’m going to share the recipe for that salad I made on the night of all nights.
I used two of the tangerines I had picked from the backyard earlier to make the dressing. I wanted something light and citrusy that wouldn’t distract from the rest of the ingreds.
I was so excited to use the kale that had just arrived in my imperfect produce box.
I hadn’t been sure if it would arrive in time for dinner that night since the window for delivery was 2-10, but it arrived at 2:07!! I’m so impressed with how well this first order and delivery went that I am potentially increasing the frequency I get it delivered after the holidays. It’s SO EASY!
They texted me when they were a few minutes out and then I could track the delivery arrival IN REAL TIME. It was crazy. And then I got a huge box of produce without any other packaging! There was one rubberband and two twist ties, but otherwise everything else was in the box. No plastic at all.
Sorry about the weird quality of the photo of my computer, but I wanted to show what the screen looks like as I’m customizing my order. I had a 30ish hour window to do that a couple of days before delivery. Even though I ordered the organic box, I still had the ability to add or subtract conventional items too.
As well as non-produce items!
The reason these (local) products were listed could be any of the same reasons as the rest of the “imperfect” items – either mislabeling, surplus, about to expire, etc. Each thing listed mentions why it is listed (ie why it’s discounted) and how it’s packaged (like if it’s in a mesh bag or something). For the most part, there’s no packaging, which is why they do warn you if your pint of tomatoes will be in a plastic carton or whatever. There was some Bob’s Red Mill coconut flour with out of date packaging that I got for super cheap as well as hazelnut flour that was about to expire. Win!
But they really have a decent selection of items beyond produce which was a surprise to me. Maybe I can get much more groceries through imperfect produce!! And it’s all food that would otherwise be wasted!
Here’s a code for $10 off if you happen to have imperfect produce in your area. We didn’t for the longest time so I’m really glad it’s finally available in Davis. I recognize all the farms from which the veggies came and can’t wait to continue this through various seasons. 🙂
PS my veggies really weren’t even that ugly.
Just a few nicks on some of the potatoes and beets and the entire (organic) order was 20 something dollars (plus another $10 for the hazelnut and coconut flour). Beauuuuutiful!
So about that dressing! It was nice, so here’s what I used.
- juice from 2 small tangerines, freshly squeezed
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- salt and pepper
Then I massaged it all into a bunch of kale and 1/4 a head of purple cabbage.
The rest of the salad was baked chicken, avo, and chips! I meant to add pepitas, but forgot. Oops. No problem, it was still delicious.
I made the same thing for the kids but didn’t give them chips until the end.
Luckily they loved the dressing so the lettuce was inhaled as fast as their fork skills would allow.
Chips are so good in salads. The Siete flavored ones would be great on this – either the lime or the nacho. Anything salty really. 🙂
These are the Nugget brand organic corn chips and they are fine.
It’s a little bit like a kale taco salad 🙂
Can’t wait to show off the rest of my produce box!
That imperfect produce box sounds so amazing!! Im totally impressed they have such a wide variety of organic options- and that’s so cool they sell additional products too! Could be a great option for the months your garden isn’t producing
totally!
