I is for Insomniac

You guys are SO hilarious!  I love that so many people noticed and commented on the lack of hummus (gasp) in my previous post, I literally laughed out loud.  Apparently I have a trademark that I wasn’t aware of until now.  Well, if it helps you sleep at night, I made up for it with a crap load of chickpea love today 🙂

The plum/melon fruit platter (above) was my dessert last night, btw.  I thought I’d try and get to bed EXTRA early since I have been having MAYJ sleep issues.  For reals.  This is getting to be a prob.  It’s been well over a week since I got back from Hawaii, so the jet-lag excuse has lost it’s validity.  I’m talking 2 hours (or less) of sleep four nights in a row.  UGH.  What can I say, I’m scared of taking any drugs (yes, I know I’m a nurse, but that doesn’t mean I think pills are the solution to the world’s aches and pains).  What to do, what to do.

I managed to pass out by 10 pm (score!) but then awoke again at 11:30 (fail!).

After frantically checking my blackberry calendar, purely to reassure myself I didn’t miss the start of my shift at the hospital (I was CONVINCED I slept through work – and the 4th altogether)…I basically just twiddled my thumbs until 4 am.

Whatever.  I don’t wanna talk about it anymore.  The punch line: I have insomnia.

In spite of all that, work was still pretty awesome.

Here were my pre-packed eats:

IMG_3175

Odwalla Superfood bar…it’s actually really easy being green.

IMG_3174

Dried pineapple rings/apples, Tribe mini-tub of hummus, english muffinapple, salad with the works (edamame, chickpeas, cherry tomatoes, dried cranz, sprouts, broccoli slaw, and spinach).

I like weekends that are slow, especially when I work with people who don’t suck.  And since it’s a holiday weekend, the day was especially easy.  I only had 3 patients, and I discharged one after lunch, so the second half of the day was smooth sailing…

I got home from work and put together a plate of yummies to bring up to the rooftop.  I finished off the black bean/quinoa burgers.

IMG_3183

Family size hummus?  Bring it.  Oh, it’s already been brought-en.

IMG_3184 IMG_3185

My mom peels cucumbers like that, and I think it makes them pretty 🙂

I watched the fireworks on the roof, and came back down to get ready for bed (and have a little dessert).

IMG_3177IMG_3176

Peanut brittle and green grapes.

Ciao bellas.  Hope you’re 4th was great.  Here’s my AM eats for the 5th, pre-packed and ready for consumption.

This will be my first time trying the CHOCO-WALLA odwalla bar, so the review will soon follow.  The salad is much of the same, with the addition of cukes and an increase in chickpeas/edamame (hate to skimp on the bean ratio, ya heard?).

XX, HHHH (hungry hungry hummus hippie) – as per Julie’s suggestion 😉

Thank goodness you got some hummus-lovin in! I was worried!! You would have been so proud of my hummus skills last night!

That peanut brittle looks goooooood 😉 Sorry about the sleeping issues – if you drink tea you could try chamomile? Hope you get some zzzzs!!

  2. VeggieGirl

Yeah, I haven’t been able to get to sleep before 12:30am for the past 2 weeks – you and I should have a sleepover party and celebrate the insomnia, hahahaha 😀

Insomnia sucks. Boo. I’m not a big pill-pusher but have heard melatonin works for some people…

Hope today is as breezy at work as yesterday. I wish I worked at a hospital- if you tell me it’s like real-life “Scrubs” am switching careers. Actually, if it’s not like “Scrubs” don’t burst my bubble. How cool would it be to work with JD and Turk?!

I bought a huge tub of hummus today- predicting it will last till Tuesday at the latest. I really think we should research the risk of chickpea overload (do you ever call them garbonzos? I think that is such a weird word! who came UP with that?!)

  4. lilveggiepatch

NO! You gotta get some sleep, lady. If you don’t want to take drugs (or melatonin), have you tried Sleepytime or Sleepytime Extra tea? Hot bath? A back rub when K gets his booty back from wherever he is?

I love peanut brittle. It’s so retro, and so freaking good.

  5. blueeyedheart

Someone I work with swears by valerian for insomnia… I’m not sure if it works, because half of the time my problem is that I just don’t have time for sleep! But if you’re wary of pills, I think it’s all-natural.

I love the new nickname! 😉

I’m really sorry to hear about your insomnia! I use melatonin and it kind of helps. I hope you get some more rest tonight!

Glad the hummus is back in your life – I know I’ll sleep easier tonight!!!

  7. Courtney

You poor thing! Only 2 hours of sleep?! Try valerian! Seriously–it isn’t a drug and it certainly can’t hurt…you need some sleep!

Glad to see both dried fruit AND hummus back in your lunches 🙂

I am a terrible sleeper too, its awful! I love that you eat hummus as much as I do. I haven’t found a brand that I like as much as homemade though, so I am whipping up buckets of the stuff!

  9. julie

    i just thought of another:
    hungry hummus hoarding hippie.
hahahaha I’m totes one of those people that run a joke into the ground.

mmm mmm i’m thinking about that apple and hummus combo and it looks REALLY good.

    get some sleeps girl!
we neeed to have a lunch or dinner date soon! <—creep?

  10. Danielle

Ha, glad you got your hummus 🙂

I know too well about the insomnia… my advice would be to step away from technology at least an hour before trying to sleep. It helps your brain calm down. Sweet dreams!

  11. broccolihut

Yay for the return of the chickpea goodness! My mom peels cucumbers the same way…and so do I as a result!

  12. Abby

Valerian tea/caplets are a natural way to help you sleep, but be careful…for some people, it has the opposite effect. (And I am in that category. It worked for a week and then it was like I was popping speed or something.)

    Yah for the hummus homecoming!

  13. Quinn

You found baby tubs of hummus!

Let me know how the choco is – I’m still partial to the Superfood one!

Happy Belated 4th! Hope work wasn’t horrible!

  14. Missy Maintains

Sorry about your insomnia! It really is the worst! I take melatonin like a lot of peole above. Even just a quarter of one knocks me out. Sometimes they give me crazy dreams though so I wouldn’t completely recommend them! I’ve never had the choco Odwalla so I can’t wait to hear your review!

  15. Jessica (jesslikesithot)

Elise, I’m hoping that you finished off that tub of family-size hummus in one sitting?? If so, i’m proud….OTHERWISE, someone may be losing her hummus-devouring abilities, ya hear?! 😉

I’m sorry you’ve been having horrible sleep lately, I never let myself take pills either though! I don’t wanna become dependent I guess?! Try drinking some warmmm soy milk & a toasted up english muffin with peanut butter. That comfort food has GOTTA put a girl to sleep!

  16. elise

tea may be my next trial. melatonin has been doing the trick for now, but i hate using something more than one night in a row….makes me nervy :/ hmmm

peanut brittle? just you wait K, the package will not disappoint (TWSS)!

  17. elise

haha, well, nobody calls me blonde doctor, but im way more of a carla than an elliot anyways 🙂 i heart scrubs, and to keep you from bailing on your current career track, ill just say the show is way more enjoyable than 99% of my shifts

  18. elise

tea is such a good call, im not sure why i forgot about it…i guess the latest warm(er) weather made it slip my mind. ive tried melatonin and it seems to work, but pill use (aka dependency on them to zzzz) still makes me a bit nervous.

  19. elise

i know what you mean about lacking the time…sadly, thats usually the case. ill look into the valerian, thanks!

  20. elise

have you tried sabra? it just may change your life. usually i prefer home-made as well, but sabra’s roasted red pepper hummus is laced with crack i think!!

  21. elise

ME TOO!!! its buried 10 feet in the soil and im still at it…

  22. elise

do you even have to ASK?! obvi 🙂 elise = family size appetite but thats prob basic knowledge by now! with our addictive personalities, its no wonder we are cautious about dependency. i think i have a chickpea dependency.

can you come make me that pre-sleepy time snack and tuck me into bed at night?

  23. elise

i agree, superfood and superprotein are the best ones.

  24. elise

thats a great tip! i love when readers come up with all the ideas that once upon a time i knew, but have long since forgotten about. thanks so much!!

  25. elise

the apple doesnt fall too far from the tree i suppose…

  26. elise

whoa, thats a good thing to know! i guess i should try it on a plane or somewhere that wont have disastrous consequences if it does in fact make me super alert – haha
