I probably make or pack Kyle’s lunches 75% of the time. He only eats on campus a few days a week and every once in a while it aligns with my work days. Which means…
I can pack both of our food the night before and kill two birds with one stone.
His differ in that they often have cheese and packaged health bars, but otherwise they are very similar.
I made his salad with spinach, tomatoes, falafel, sunflower seeds, and parmesan.
While mine had quinoa instead of cheese.
My breakfast was oats with Giddy Up & Go granola and strawberries.
He had a PB&J sandwich instead.
You already know my breakfast preferences, so I don’t think I need to elaborate much. Sweet, savory, it’s all good. I’m not hard to please. Kyle, however, is a very picky breakfast-eater. Savory typically trumps sweet when he has time to cook for himself, but in a crunch, he will grab a Clif bar or piece of toast. He doesn’t like hot cereals (like oatmeal) or granola, but he does like grits and every so often he’ll eat cold cereal. He won’t eat yogurt unless it’s in a smoothie. He also won’t eat my home-made baked goods (even my quick breads, muffins, and/or bars). He says they’re too sweet (and yet he thinks chocolate chip & peanut butter chewy bars are perfect ways to start the day). He’s a funny one.
Our snack preferences overlap some. We both like salty nuts, bananas and dark chocolate.
On top of that, I opt for carrots, Larabars, and candied ginger while he goes for Kashi, Clif and Chewy bars.
Because he relies on processed bars way more than I do, I try to make sure his main meals are full of whole foods. Sometimes he’s on campus all day (through dinner too) so I make him big servings of pasta with marinara or pesto, or brown rice with veggies and tofu, but I’m pleased to say he is very content with massive salads as a meal. Happy hippie! Ideally, he could reduce the number of packaged bars he eats, but it’s easy for him and since he doesn’t have GI issues, I’m kinda whatever about it.
How do your meals differ from your significant other?
This is a sweet post. My boyfriend’s in medical school right now, and we’re doing the long distance thing for now. But when he was here, he could eat cereal for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and more. He loved it. I’ve basically removed most cereals from my diet due to the sugars, but I always have to have a ton of boxes on hand whenever he’s in town. He could crush at least a box a day. He’s totally a fitness buff, so he can get away with it. I can’t. It’d go straight to my hips! I try to eat whole foods, too.
I love how much you care about what he eats, I’m sure many people wouldn’t put in so much effort!
My fiance and I eat similarly in some ways, and totally different in others. I cook dinner just about every night, but I am vegetarian and he isn’t. What I normally do is make the same sides for us (veggies and grains) and just change up our proteins. I’ll make beans, lentils or tofu for myself and chicken or fish for him. I always make extra so that I have enough for each of us to take to work the next day. We’ve been using this method for about 4 years and so far it’s working. I don’t mind cooking meat for him, (although it would definitely be easier if he went veg!- no chance) but I always joke that I have no idea how it tastes- I just season it by sight and based on what I think would taste good. I haven’t had meat since I was about 10, so while cooking comes intuitively to me, cooking meat doesn’t necessarily. He hasn’t complained yet so I guess I’ll keep doing what I’m doing!
Me and my boyfriend eat completely different. I’m a vegetarian and he’s a hardcore carnivore. I love vegetables and he loves taco bell. I’m secret trying to win him over with healthy eating, but it might take a little longer.
adorbs.
and a reminder that i need to be better at packing lunches! miss you mama!!!!
We are at totally opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to eating. My boyfriend is a complete meat eater. I always make him try my creations, or healthy snacks that I have, but there is always something he doesn’t like about them. I sneaked some kale chips on his palate yesterday, (they were amazing), but he didn’t like them at all.. The only things that we both like are.. Yam fries, granola and muffins that I make, hummus, and wine… Other than that – we are quite opposite! It’s funny because some things I make, I taste them, and think they are incredible, and then my friends or my bf will try them, and be like “woah, this is so weird”… haha I just don’t get it!
you are such a good wife! marshall packs his own damn lunch.
Men are so weird sometimes, aren’t they? My fiance is almost on board with my vegan ways, although he still eats the occasional meat dish. No dairy or eggs though, so that makes me happy. He, too, has this weird thing with sweets. He doesn’t have the sweet tooth that I have (lucky bum!), and rarely eats more than one serving of my baked goods. But, he loves his Nugo bars, which are covered in chocolate and much more processed than I would like. He hates Stevia too. He has mastered the art of making his own work lunches which almost always include quinoa, tofu, beans (protein packed!) and some kind of leafy green. He’s also happy with the HUGE salads I prepare too!
I think the main way that Seth and I differ in our meals is variety–that is, I like it, and he doesn’t. Seth eats pretty much the same thing every single day: green smoothie for breakfast, turkey sandwich for lunch, beef jerky for snack, and stir-fry for dinner. I, on the other hand, can’t stand to have the same thing twice in one month!
Fortunately, he likes vegetarian food (including tofu!) so it’s easy to cook for him when he eats here.
Our meals are drastically different – meat, cheese, chips, cookies for him. That’s all he’ll eat! If I give him carrots or load up his sandwich with veggies, he won’t eat it!
I pretty much give up with Viper… he thinks I’m a weirdo with what I eat – BUT he will eat anything ‘as long as it’s tasty’ – he does have an affinity for white bread, hot chips, sausages and milk chocolate that I can’t seem to persuade him out of. Ick. Oh well, I try – at least Misty is super healthy!
My husband eats massive bowls of leftovers from dinner for his breakfast. He used to eat a breakfast of basmati rice, Lebanese flat bread, hummus, beans and salad every morning before we moved in together, but now he’s lazy and relies on my leftovers! Ha!
The biggest difference between me and my significant other is he adds bread to everything. He even makes sandwiches out of chips (i.e. fries)…it’s called a “chip butty”. I also used to make him lunches, but this year since he’s a full time lecturer he thinks he’s fancy so he has lunch at the University staff club. Hmph!
Haha pretty much same here – I live with my boyfriend and two other boys, generally I cook for myself (especially since I travel a lot for work, so I’m often cooking in the motel by myself), but if I am home I try to cook for the boys a couple times a week. Generally I cook the same thing but one vegetarian, one meaty – like two seperate pasta bakes made at the same time, spaghetti bolagnase with a separate nut meat one for me, or thinks like thai green curry with the tofu and chicken separate.
Haha my boyfriend has been known to put a meat pie between two pieces of bread!
love the fact that your hubby doesn’t turn up his nose at some of the foods you prepare for him (because lets be honest – the food you make always looks & sounds divine)
Oh yeah, he does that too! Well, not meat pies, but vegetable pasties and pies because he’s vegetarian. It makes me a bit queasy to watch!
thanks kailey!
same!!! sometimes my friends and family will try something i make and they are iffy on it whereas ill be DROOLING over it. when that happens i take it all for myself though. if they dont appreciate it like i do, its their loss. haha. im sorta possessive with good food.
Well, I know some girls don’t like to admit this, but I eat so much more than my partner. Though, in truth, it’s pretty easy, seeing as he’s imaginary.
youre hilarious.
