My birthday post last left off with an unopened bottle of Gallo 2007 Cab.
We took care of that.
Glug glug glug.
My birthday suit freakum’ dress – how’d I do Kailey? I’m fairly certain this was supposed to be a shirt, but I’m not the tallest (ok, I’m short) so I do what I do.
For dinner we went to a sushi restaurant in Santa Monica called Wokcano recommended by a friend. There are a few other locations of this restaurant, all in Southern California.
While the rest of our party trickled in, I ordered a Lychee Pear Martini. As far as cocktails go it was pretty good. Not too sweet and strong enough that I could taste the alcohol. In other words, I could sip it without finishing it in 4 seconds (sometimes when drinks are too good and the EtOH is masked, I finish them far too quickly…bad news bears).
I had two of these over the course of the dinner and got a nice buzz going on.
Eventually we were all ready to order some grub.
Veggie tempura
Edamame
It was pretty much a free for all in the roll department…we just ordered a ton and went to town.
Some of the boys weren’t big sushi fans, so they did their own thing…
Starters for the non-sushi peeps.
So meaty.
I’m not totally sure what they ordered, because we were organized at the table like a 7th grade dance – girls on one end, boys on the other.
I took pictures of most of the rolls, but a lot of the photos turned out iffy at best so I’ll only post the yummy ones.
So, yeah. We got a lot of rolls. And yes, they were delicious. However, as far as sushi goes, nothing was incredibly inventive, and the prices were a bit high. Also, I wasn’t overly impressed with the source of the seafood. And upon inquiry I found out that all of the crab was all imitation. 😛 It was also kinda empty for a Saturday night.
I don’t wanna totally bag on the place though. The food tasted good, but I still think I’ll try a different sushi place next time.
Side note: the Giants’ win did bring some fun rowdy activity to the bar scene. Yeah Giants!!
Blurry birthday “cheesecake.” Negative on the dairy-free dessert options…
So after I blew out my imaginary candles, I shared my non-vegan dessert with those who could tolerate lactose…
I’m sorry Alene, I had to post this.
I told you we were divided like pre-teens.
After dinner we went to a wine tasting bar down the street called Pourtal.
The way the place works is you buy a card (putting however much $$ on it as you want) and then whenever you want a pour of wine, you insert your card and it subtracts whatever monetary amount the wine costs.
The price for a 1 ounce pour is listed above each bottle (it ranges from $1.50 to $6).
1 ounce of wine is dangerous because it feels like nothing…and next thing you know you’ve had $30 worth of “nothing.” There are ~25 ounces in a bottle so you do the math…
After we maxed out on wine we wandered next door to The King’s Head.
It was dive-y but spacious, so we got a table and hung out there for the rest of the night.
I had so much fun! A perfect birthday with good friends, good food, good times. Maybe 28 doesn’t seem too old anymore.
P.S. Have you entered my Coconut Oil giveaway yet? Hop to it, the clock is ticking!!
I love your birthday dress! (/shirt? lol)

UGH. can you get any more gorgeous? 🙂 ps, you’re really starting to OWN that haircut!!!

I’m very, very picky about sushi so I can understand your complaint.
That wine bar sounds amazing! And yes, quite dangerous.
Happy Belated Birthday!!
I LOVE the dress/shirt! That is something that would qualify as a dress for you and a shirt for me…although I’d try my best to make it a dress.
I also love that new length on you! It truly is fresh for fall (see: Olivia Palermo’s new ‘do).
Ugh, imitation crab at a sushi restaurant? Not ok.
Glad you had a FAAAAB birthday!!!!
Looking uber-foxy, mama! Happy bday!

I love that sassy one shoulder top/dress! So cute on you. I love being a shortie 🙂 More sushi.. I think I need to refrain from looking at it 😉 I had to skip over it!
