When does 5 lbs. seem like a lot and when does it seem like a little? It depends on the context.
5 lb. dumbbells – a little
5 lb. textbooks – a lot
Lugging around a backpack full of textbooks is less than ideal for students, and something I lamented over constantly when I was in high school and college. And yet, I lift weights, by choice, for exercise, several times a week.
5 lb. muscle – a lot
5 lb. fat – a little
This is just my personal opinion, but I consider a weight loss goal of 5 pounds or under “vanity weight” because it’s not in the life threatening stages of obesity. Maybe that’s because of shows like The Biggest Loser and Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, but the context certainly has an effect on how I view body fat. Morbid obesity is so common in our country now, that my opinion is warped and 5 lbs. seems like nothing. Muscle on the other hand, is harder to gain and requires work, which is why 5 pounds seems like a lot (to me).
5 lb. oats – a lot
Unless you eat breakfast like I eat breakfast…in which case, 5 pounds is actually a little. Oats go fast in the hippie household!
What do you think? Fill in your own, 5 lbs. ______ a lot/a little.

5lbs of beef- alot…one of my big accomplishments for this year has been giving up beef. I used to eat it once a month, but would always feel crappy afterwards. What’s the point of eating food if it makes you feel crappy?? (my other big accomplishment is completing my first half marathon!!)
