Yes. I have it. And although flair ups have been minimal since I’ve been vegan, I DO still have days when I feel like caca (ironically, from the absence of it). TMI? Sorry.
Usually these days are brought on by stress, and as much as I try to avoid it (with my nice planned out schedules), sometimes life throws a wrench in it. Unavoidable. Deal.
This weekend, with my 3 shifts in a row schedule, I had to make like Tim Gunn and “make it work.”
Comfort foods, aplenty.
Review: not too shabby in a pinch, but added greens are probably the way to make the most of it.
Pre-packed salad lunches (with the help of some WF hot bar goodies).
Apple and mozzarella craze-phaze.
Btw, I like bread. And salads.
Oh, and hummus.
Clearly it’s no secret by now that hummus is a mayj part of my life. It’s rare that a day goes by without it…in fact, yesterday, in an exasperated moment when Kyle couldn’t find room for leftovers in the fridge, he made me get up off the couch and come count the number of different hummus brands and flavors in the fridge…and then proceeded to tease me for how ridiculous it was (there were 7 by the way).
Look, I’m not saying it’s healthy or normal, but I am okay with it, and he should be too.
I packed my lunches for work each and every day this weekend, but by the time my lunch break rolled around, 85% of it was already gone, and I was craving my true love, bread and hummus.
The above quinoa, hummus, carrot, and cranberry salad turned into a side dish for the Kirsty Alley portion of bread I bought (sorry for the poor quality phone pics).
I also discovered the second cutest vehicle to shovel hummus down, pitettes!!! (the first being a spoon btw). They were like whole wheat fluffs from heaven, and the only reason I managed to show restraint and NOT finish the entire bag was because I had to go back to work (that, and I had already eaten a loaf of French bread…).
By Monday’s shift I was so sick of the same old meals, but I lacked the energy to create anything different…
Chocolate Chip Peanut odwalla bar review: there was chocolate in this?? It tasted like a bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter, which is great, but then perhaps the name of the bar should be changed…I saw maybe one chocolate chip, and tasted none whatsoever. Believe me, I’m more than satisfied with a bar that resembles PB oats, but I’m not a fan of being led on.
Anyways, lunch was (again) not enough to fill my tummy, so I went with the tried and true solution. Carbs.
Thank you Bruno’s for not judging me as I bought a fresh loaf of French bread, and polished off the entire thing without so much as a pause to allow proper digestion.
Love, Elise.
Aside from Kyle’s Sunday night surprise, my dinners were not so much “meals” as a series of dishes that eventually tapered off once I felt full couldn’t find anything else in the fridge. Montage anyone?
Quinoa, shredded carrots, hummus, avocado = divine!
All things peanut buttery…dried papaya and Newman’s Own organic dark chocolate.
My brand spankin’ new Falafel chips (with hummus), which hardly lasted longer than 5 seconds after I opened them. I initially plated myself a handful and then put them away. They were out of control good. I have no idea how they did it, but they tasted EXACTLY like falafel!!!! Whaaaat? They were ridiculously addictive, so I got the bag back out for more. Mistake #1. I finished off the hummus and went and got another tub. Mistake #2. HOLY YUM! They were so good, Kyle and I started eating straight out of the bag. Mistake #3. Never eat out of the bag. It will not end well, and that’s a promise. I’ve lived it kids, and it ‘aint pretty. The poor plate sat neglected on the side, while our hands plunged into the bag time and time again, until nothing but salty crumbs were left (which we still fought over).
I should have been full by this point, right? Wrong.
After this bowl of fruit, I really was full. My poor body deserves a bit of a break after the miscellaneous-ness that I made it endure this past week, so I’m gonna try and clean up my act for the coming week.
PS I loved She’s Come Undone, and can’t wait to start my next book. Stay tuned…(unless you are on GoodReads, then you probz already know what’s up).
Hey Homey, Your blogs is not updating in my google reader. I thought you hadn’t posted in days and days. Then I clicked over here to get your URL for my post. Sad. I need to fix this ASAP.
Your hummus addiction sounds about as bad as my nut butter problem…I can’t help it–they all taste so different yet so good:)
Aren’t pitettes kick-ass? I’ve been eating Toufayan products for as long as I can remember and those pitettes are one of my faves.
I hope your poop returns ASAP!
I think Kyle MUST be okay with your hummus addiction or he would have staged an intervention by now. I know what you’ll be serving at the wedding…
Everyone has their own addictions. No shame. I have a fro-yo addiction. Hopefully my froyo phase will pass soon.
Hey Elise,
Do you have a good, simple recipes for homemade hummus? I think I want to give it a go! Of course, I thought of you 😉
Hope your tummy feels better. Sounds like this is a busy week for you!
Lots of deliciously nutritious food!
I have the IBS b.s. as well and when it flares up, it’s crappy (or as you said, lack thereof). Is the quinoa, avocado, carrot, hummus thing just everything mashed together? Looks so good (and possibly spreadable on mini pitettes or bread)!
I agree–She’s Come Undone is great. Ever read “Hypocrite In a Poofy White Dress”? Another good one…
soooo glad we met! I meant to tell you last night that my friend Dana is a nutritionist and works at UCLA in their cardiology unit (basically after a heart operation, they have to get a meal plan from her before discharge). I think its great there are people out there like you & Dana that offer the help and guidance (even if its disregarded). 🙁
Ugh–I hear ya on the IBS complaints (even though my problem sounds as if it is the opposite of yours. TMI, I know, but hey, once you start on the IBS topic, you are asking for it!). I hope you can get things back to normal again and that it doesn’t ruin your day(s?) off! It can be the worst.
Can I just say how much I love your posts?! Your food always looks so healthy and good! Yum! Well…I do have ONE complaint…why did you ruin a perfectly delicious spear of papaya with nut butter?! Hahaha 🙂 You know, actually, now that I think about it–papaya and hummus?! It could work! I may have to test that one out…
Courtney
Love the montage! 🙂
Hey, I once bought an oatmeal raisin cookie that didn’t even have “raisins” listed in the ingredients!! These things don’t have to make sense, I guess. (There actually were raisins in it, BTW.)
<3 <3
Ugh, sorry about your ibs. Sucks big time. Would psyllium make it worse?
I always add greens to my frozen dinners… they’re a little too flimsy without something extra.
Don’t worry, I’m addicted to hummus as well. You can NEVER have to much hummus:)
no bueno!! i think back when i did the wordpress switch, google reader got messed up. you have to switch your subscription to http://www.hungryhungryhippie.com/feed let me know if it still isnt updating after that? thanks for the heads up though 🙁 grrr tehcnology
Nothin’ wrong with having a variety of hummus, when you eat something everyday it’s nice to have some variations here and there!
HAHA I just died over that baguette picture. Seriously, I’m so proud 🙂
That Odwalla bar shall be on my list of foods to eat today so we can compare notes. By the way I tried the sesame seed bars you sent me – yum. End of discussion. I need to photograph these rando bites of brittles because they’re bueno!
She’s Come Undone is the next book I’m reading! I recently read “I know this much is true” by Wally Lamb which was fantastic. I have a little bit left of my current book “Into the Woods” which is a good detective novel. Not blow me out of the water amazing but still good!
Ugh, sorry your suffering an IBS flare-up. I suffer from IBD (different – don’t know if you’ve heard of it) and specifically UC…I don’t think it’s TMI – it’s part of your eating etc!
Your food looks awesome. LOVE the mahoosive amount of hummus. I need to think about introducing some more flavors into my life…
I read She’s Come Undone in 9th grade and think maybe I wasn’t capable of fully appreciating it at that point. I probably need to re-read.
Ummm, “Make it work,” is one of my most favorite sayings evah!
Lady, you are welcome to some of the Sabra in my freezer if you want it. They sent me like a lifetime supply several months back so I had no choice but to freeze it! Even now, I don’t know how I’ll ever get through it all, so please feel free to help a girl out. 🙂
Hope tummy troubles didn’t follow last night’s fare – it was so deliiiiicious!
no way, it was SOOO good. your freezer must look insane…holey donuts, sabra, haha! you wouldnt tease a girl…
i’m in love with hummus too. you should make the one i made last night! it’s amazing. i talked about it in my post today. it’s gena’s recipe from choosing raw. SO GOOD. and your salads look amazing, girl!
