Dreaming of bread

Last weekend, I woke up in the middle of the night salivating.  Why?

IMG_5383

Because of the delicious aroma of this loaf of bread.  Blame it on the carbs, yo!

Note to self: never again start a loaf of bread in the breadmaker as you are going to bed.

If you’ve ever made bread, you probably know where I’m coming from because you know how fantastic it smells.

Well apparently my dreaming self got a whiff of the fresh warm dough and wanted in on the action.  I incorporated the smell into a dream and woke up drooling.  Seriously.  So even in my slumber state I managed to enjoy my bread!

I got back to sleep fine, but the first thing I wanted upon waking was…

…bread, glorious bread.

Fresh whole wheat bread + Justin’s peanut butter = best breakfast ever!

Here’s my got-to breadmaker recipe:

Simple Whole Wheat Breadmaker Bread (vegan, 1.5 lb loaf)

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Earth Balance
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp bread machine yeast (1 packet)

Directions:

Add ingredients to bread machine in order listed.  Make an indent in the flour to pour the yeast into (making sure the yeast doesn’t come in contact with the water).  Then start the machine as indicated (whole wheat setting, medium darkness,  1.5 lb loaf).

That’s it!

After my bread cravings were satisfied, I headed to the hospital with all my pre-packed eats in tow.

Working on the weekends isn’t that bad, but when I’m missing NFL playoffs I get a little sad.

I was too lame to pre-mix oats, but I did grab a couple of packets to make at work.  I also had some fruit on the side (leftovers from my coworker’s party).  I’m starting to realize that I can only eat a small-ish portion of grapes at once or I get GERD.  Strawberries and oranges are fine though.

Lunch was random tidbits that I found in the fridge, including spinach, quinoa, butternut squash, and two fried eggs.

IMG_5379

Afternoon snacks: carrots, snap peas, Coconut Chocolate Chip Clif Bar, candied ginger, Dagoba dark chocolate.

I got home from work starving, so as soon as I got out of the shower I smeared some tempeh salad on a slice of bread.

This held me over while I made a “real” dinner…

IMG_5393

Which was the exact same thing but with two slices of bread rather than one (like a normal sandwich).  Oh, and these slices were toasted, too.

For dessert I had yet another slice of bread (with Justin’s peanut butter).

As you can see, fresh bread doesn’t last long in the HHH household!

Have you ever woken up to a dream about food?  This was the first time I had a food dream that woke me up salivating.  It was so weird.

Unrelated (but kinda related) I’ve been told time and time again that I smack my lips in my sleep.  Kyle and other family members/friends that I’ve shared a bedroom with in the past have shared this with me and I find it completely bizarre, but it’s something I have done for years (so I’m told).

If you have any yummy bread maker recipes, please share!  I’m pretty hooked on this one, but I am ready to branch out.

I remember when I went over to a French-Canadian family’s home for Canada Day and the dad made homemade whole wheat bread and raisin bread. I demolished 1/3 of a loaf….
Sadly I don’t have a recipe but you should try a cinnamon raisin bread next time! I bet the aroma will be intoxicating!

I sometimes dream about food (eat something in my dream etc.), but that’s nothing unusual for me. However, one night I woke up around 3 am with the thought that i have to have a PB sandwich immediately. Once I gained some consciousness I tried to resist since I don’t normally have mid-night meals 😉 But after some tossing and turning I finally surrendered, stumbled to the kitchen, ate the flipping sandwich and came back to sleep 🙂

I will try your bread recipe soon…it look so good!

Weirdly I never dream about food…I have a degree in science-nutrition, I have two blogs about foods, I’m watching food network all day, reading my recipes books, reading food blog, cooking vegan for me and regular for my family and I don’t dream about food…I dream about anything else but that!?!?!

    1 cup almond milk
    1 egg
    2 tablespoons butter/margarine
    1/3 cup sugar
    3/4 teaspoon salt
    3 cups bread flour
2 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Put it on sweet bread setting (i cut down the sugar usually). It is the only non-wheat bread i make in my machine. Its similar to challah and tastes amazing. Its okay with whole wheat flour but definitely not light and airy like this one! Totally worth it!!!

What packaged oats do you buy? I noticed in the picture that they had flax in them. Thanks!

We had to get rid of our breadmaker because I would just stick my face down in it and snarf up the bread the moment the little timer dinged. Bad breadmaker! Bad!

Tempeh salad? Do you have a recipe to share?!

  8. Katie @ Peace Love & Oats

Haha I have the same issue with grapes! And that bread looks delicious, we used to make bread at my grandmothers when we slept over!

  9. Izabela (yoginiselfportrayal.wordpress.com)

oh no, now I am dreaming about the bread and I don’t even have a bread maker;((( Do I know if yeast are necessary?

  10. Leng

    Ohh your bread looks delicious!

I haven’t had any dreams about food. I wish I did. Maybe that would get me hungry in the mornings.

That’s the funniest thing that you smack your lips in your sleep.

I love how simple your homemade bread is – this one I’ll have to try! Plus – I’ve always wanted to try Justin’s peanut butter – is it better than the other brands?

  12. Lou

My sister grinds her teeth SUPER loudly in her sleep, ew it’s weird. I dreamed about eating a Big Mac the other night, and woke up feeling sick. Ick.

Bread+ Peanut Butter = joy. So simple, so good – your bread recipe is bookmarked to try after we move house in a few days.

I LOVE dagoba chocolate, so good 🙂

Holy mother of homemade bread! I want a slice of that stuff right now, complete with Justin’s smeared over ever possible spot. I wish to god I had a bread maker, although I think that could be dangerous. Bread doesn’t stand a chance in this house either. Where did you find that coconut chocolate chip flavor of Clif bar? I haven’t seen that before but I think I must get my paws on one soon.

Your bread is beautiful! When I was little my Dad used to make wholewheat bread and pizza crusts – this was back in the 80s when it was all about Wonderbread and Fluff. My brother and I were sent to school with sandwiches on whole wheat bread – props to my parents 🙂 My mom got a breadmaker when I was in highschool/college and I would brings loaves back to school with me.
This totally made me want to get a breadmaker now!
    Love your simple recipe, too!

i know what you mean! sometimes im so sick of thinking about food after reading others’ blogs, writing recipes, publishing HHH posts, etc.

  17. Elise (Post author)

similar to challah?!? umm hell yeah! thanks 🙂

  18. Elise (Post author)

i 100% understand. whenever i make bread its a struggle to eat anything else. all i want is bread. i buy the yeast packets in rations now because otherwise i will eat a loaf a day.

  19. Elise (Post author)

    on its way 🙂

  20. Elise (Post author)

yeast is necessary to have a bread that rises. without yeast the recipe will be a quick bread. the cooking time will need to be altered, but if you have a breadmaker is should have a quickbread setting. if you are making it in the oven, i dont know how the timing or ingredients would change though.

  21. Elise (Post author)

im a pretty big fan, but i dont have any real allegiance to any certain brand. justins is great, but i will mostly buy whats organic and cheapest.
i havent bought any in a while though because now im making my own. any store bought nutbutter jars i have now are ones i got from giveaways or from a company to review.

  22. Elise (Post author)

    new kitchen!?!? SO exciting!!!

  23. Elise (Post author)

i got it at the whole foods near my parents’ house but i think any whole foods will have them.

  24. Elise (Post author)

your parents rock! my breadmaker is one of my fave appliances 🙂

  25. Elise (Post author)

thanks joy! for some reason i have been scared at the idea of mix-ins in the breadmaker, but i am glad to know its possible.

  26. Elise (Post author)

honestly, i have no idea. i swiped them from my parents house when i was home last time! sorry!

  27. Elise (Post author)
