I went home to the Bay Area for the weekend (which was awesome), but now that I’m back in LA reality has set in and I’m stressed out for (what feels like) a million and forty-five different reasons.
Purging my woes on this blog is quite therapeutic, so here’s a list of things I’m currently freaking out about:
- I work 5 out of the next 6 days. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday. That’s a lot of consecutive shifts.
- That one day off is when Kyle and I are moving. I haven’t packed a damn thing. We don’t even have keys to our new place yet.
- We have zero food in the house. We’ve been trying to use up everything in the freezer, fridge, and pantry to minimize food that has to be thrown out or moved, so our fridge is pretty sparse. Add on the fact that we have been out of town since Thursday…well, suffice it to say, I may be buying my lunches in the hospital cafeteria…
- I hate spending money on food I could easily make myself, so the idea of paying 600% over the actual cost of spinach and carrots from the salad bar annoys the crap out of me.
- Kyle’s grandfather passed away last week and the funeral may be this weekend. In Nor Cal. I have no clue how I’m going to attend, but the idea of not going breaks my heart.
- Our drive down the I-5 was even more horrific than usual because we got to the grapevine JUST as highway patrol closed it off due to snow. We had to backtrack. A lot. It sucked because we were making great timing until that 150 mile detour. Oh and guess what? We still had to go through snow. Stupid I-5.
So that’s that.
In summary. Work, work, work. Hideous drive 7+ hour commute from SF to LA. Pack. Move. Work, work, work. Find food somewhere along the way. Repeat 7+ hour drive. To a funeral. If I can get off work, work, work.
I’m currently attempting to channel as much inner peace as possible but I’m not doing a very good job.
How did I go from the bright and sunny Ferry Building…
To this…
Then this…
White out!
Ok, how about something upbeat?? Tomorrow I’m announcing the cookie winner so get in your entries asap.
Have you ever gotten snowed in or out? Highway closed? Road block?
We almost had this same thing happen last year on the I-5. I keep forgetting it’s February!! It felt like summer this weekend in Nor Cal, I’m all messed up.
When was the last time you moved? [Please don’t give me any horror stories with how long it took to pack or anything, I’m already freaking out]
We moved from NYC to CA. It was smooth because we had hired movers that we weren’t paying for. I miss those days…
Iiiick snow. Blah. I’m so ready for summer! We’ve been snowed in twice this year, legitimately. But I’m a wuss at driving on ice, so I’m going to say I’m snowed in almost every time it snows.
Wait did i miss something, your moving??? I haven’t been able to read every post like usual so must have missed it! Are you staying in LA?? Im coming over to LA in August and would have loved to catch up
I mean CA not LA!!!
Well that is crap on a cracker, eh? The only thing I can say is that two weeks from now you’ll be totally settled, back into a new routine and looking back on this as a really crappy stretch. Plus, I also must have missed the moving post…where to?
Anyway, I live in Michigan, so I can’t help but chuckle when you guys get any rain or snow. We regularly have ice storms and 8 inches of snow that turn my 25 min commute into an hour. It’s lovely (said completely sarcastic.) I live in the wrong state, I know this…
ugh. so true. moving within LA…nothing huge, but still enough to pack everything up and unpack everything again.
we are staying local (still in southern ca), its a short move, but a move nonetheless…
I’m sorry you’re dealing with so much stress this week. Keep trying to channel that inner peace- try a Dave Farmer yoga podcast. I love him, he does a great job at bringing your mind back to the present moment, and he’s good for a chuckle.
Sending postive vibes your way!!
So sorry to hear about Kyle’s grandfather. I’m sure you’ll make it through this no problem.
I moved in September – just a few blocks from Union Square to the East Village, but it’s amazing how much crap you accumulate in three years….
i’m so sorry to hear about kyle’s grandfather. i can appreciate how hard it is to lose a grandparent, but everyone’s experience is for sure unique.
the last time i moved was in 2007, BUT i moved twice in 2007 and within 6 months of each move. UGH. i hate packing and moving, but the unpacking and organizing is fun.
i got snowed in in 2008 for literally about 4ish days when we had a HUGE snow/ice storm in the Portland area. we don’t do well with snow up here (schools shut down for dustings) and i had drifts halfway up my front door one day when i thought, “oh it’s not so bad, i can make it to work”. too bad i couldn’t even get out of the house…and i’m a sissy at driving in that stuff anyway.
So much stress–sorry to hear it! I think the best way to work through it (or at least what I do) is to find little pockets of happiness amidst the stress. Like jamming along to good tunes with a cup of coffee on the seven hour drive. Always seems to help, even if just a little bit.
You can endure anything, as long as there is an end in sight. The end to most of this is within the next two weeks! You can do it!
I technically moved in with my boyfriend a year ago, but I started the move two years ago. After dating for five years, he was still apprehensive about living with a girlfriend, due to a bad previous experience. I started with a drawer in his bedroom, and over the next year I eventually upgraded to my own dresser, started bringing in my (better-than-his) appliances and dishes, and eventually my cat… After my cat and I had spent about 100 consecutive nights over, Boyfriend thought it would be cost-effective for me to give up my empty apartment. Hehe.
I’m actually pretty jealous that you ran into snow. Sadly, winter never came this year in Maryland. It has been sunny and in the 60s the past few days. But in 2010 we got a huge blizzard. We had some 40 inches of snow that year and actually got snowed in for about a week. Living in the city, there is no where to go with the snow, so it took days for people to dig themselves out. That was a fun year! (But I am sorry for your long-ass detour!)
shit dude. sorry about all the lameness going on. sometimes it’s good just to put it all out there, so i am glad you did! hang in there! sorry to hear about kyle’s gpa 🙁
You will be amazed what you can accomplish when you are forced into certain situations. Try to make a plan for the things you can control and let go of the things you can not. It sucks to pay for food you can make at home, but it’s rare that you will have to do that and purchasing your food might eliminate some stress. As far as packing, you can definitely get it done quickly. Most of your items will be large (i.e. furniture) and won’t require packing. And remember that most of this stress will be gone in another week or two and you can get back to your less-stressful routine. You can do it! Visualize it! You may have to do this in the bathroom since you are so short on time, though!
I hate moving, too. We have been in our current place since November but didn’t really get all our stuff until January, so we feel like we’ve been moving in for a while. However, we couldn’t be happier than we are now! And yes, I’ve totally been snowed in. A year ago, we had about 18″ of snow (back in Tulsa — totally NOT normal for there!), and it was days before we could drive anywhere. The bad news is that my husband (then my boyfriend) caught the flu. The good news was that we were living across the street from one of the only open grocery stores, so we didn’t starve.
oh yes I have gotten snowed in before. when I lived in Denver,CO for a few months a few years ago, we had 3 days straight of snow!!! I could not do anything, it was horrible haha
though the snow was pretty.
Two years ago I packed up and moved from my home state of Texas to Oregon.. talk about a culture shock! I still haven’t gotten used to all the rain and cold and truthfully, I don’t think I ever will. The only nice thing is we live about 10 minutes away from my parents and get to see them as often as we want.
P.S. I just got my shipment of Doctor’s Best supplements in the mail and I’m so freaking excited! Thanks again for the giveaway. That was awesome!!!!
oh girl, best of luck on everything! sending some major zen your way…
not traffic, but I spent Friday night in ohare airport due to a cancelled flight…then took early flight to close city, mthen had to rent a car to get to original destination to get my car to drive to work, which I was suppose to be at in the AM. luckily the boss covered my patients…so stressful.
maybe this week won’t be as bad as you think. sometimes things work out nice and smoothly 🙂
Sorry you’re so stressed (remember it could always be worse)! But thanks for the Doctors Best vitamins! I got my box of goodies today!
Elise 🙁 I’m sorry! Things can only get better, right? Just get through these next few days and know that a fresh, new week is right around the corner! You’ll figure everything out the best way you can. Good luck!
Ugh those consecutive shifts don’t sound like fun at all! I actually just moved last Friday from my hometown to Omaha. (about 5 hours). It went pretty smoothly besides the drive being sunny as ever and then the second we opened the Uhaul door it snowed two inches while we unloaded everything. lol. Better than rain I suppose! 😛
