Don’t judge me

Ladies and gentlemen, Alexia Spicy Sweet Potato Julienne Fries with Chipotle Seasoning

IMG_7343

I wasn’t going to share this…because frankly I am a bit embarrassed by it…but I’m only human after all.

IMG_7333

So I opened this bag to make as a dinner “side dish” and guess what?  I ate the whole thing.  By myself.

IMG_7335IMG_7334

I know I’m not the first person to ever do such a thing.  But I’m not so sure it’s something I’m proud of.  I like eating what I want, when I want, and not feeling bad or guilty or whatever about it.  It’s just food; it doesn’t mean anything about me as a person, and yet, I don’t exactly like celebrating such glutinous behavior.  This was only my dinner’s side dish after all…  Sheesh.

FYI, I’m choosing to show you the nutritional stats only because I took a photo of the label, but rest assured, the other night I turned my blind eye to it.

IMG_7336

They were easy as pie to make.  Dump from bag to pan and slide into oven.

IMG_7338

Once you smell them, you know it’s time to grub.  I had them with BBQ sauce because that’s how I roll.  Spicy and saucy are a good match.

IMG_7341

They were actually salty enough on their own.  I loved the flaky crust that caked each fry, but to be fair, they didn’t really taste anything like fries.  Alexia seems unsure if they are a health food or not.  Ordinarily I wouldn’t buy these on my own, but I had a coupon for one free item (the only kind of coupon I’ll use).

IMG_7342

But here’s the thing, I rarely (slash never) crave greasy packaged foods.  So while these baked sweet potato fries may be a healthy-ish option for those who regularly buy frozen or fried eats, for me personally, they are a big step down from my typical food choices.  Does that make Alexia’s fries a good compromise?  Or does it make me a food snob?

IMG_7344

Maybe both.  Maybe neither.  Meh.  Whatever, I don’t have the energy.  They were ok, but I wouldn’t buy them on my own.

IMG_7345

Naturally I followed up my anti-Atkin’s pre-meal with an equally carb-tastic dinner.

Tropical Traditions Coconut Peanut Butter and raisins on toasted Alvarado Street bread.

When was the last time you opened and subsequently finished a package in one sitting?  Please don’t leave me hanging here peeps!  And please don’t judge me.  I swear I eat wholesome food most of the time!

It happens to the best of us! And I definitely don’t judge you. Sweet potato fries are probably my favorite fried food. And I don’t really eat fried foods. BTW, have you tried the sweetheart fries at Veggie Grill? Delish.

  2. hippierunner

You are still my food role model! I get tired of things too easily so that never happens but the other day I did almost finish an entire berry snack cake (a recent Mama Pea recipe)! It was that good! Fortunately (or unfortunately) my boyfriend made me share.

  3. Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots

that’s totally the story of my life when I open a bag of cereal… dangerous, dangerous territory I tell you 😉

those look amazing though! I’ve only had sweet potato fries once or twice. I should fix that. 😉

  4. The Balanced Bean

I have definitely eaten a whole box of cereal in one sitting. And a pint of ice cream (different days!). It happens =)

  5. Deane

Pretty sure I finished 16 oz of hummus the other day… At dinner. Once I start dipping, it gets kind of blurry and the only way I can tell what kind of damage I have done is from the evidence… Other than that, I lack portion control in all areas of my life. I can never seem to leave a grocery store with exactly what I told myself I would be buying! Pretty sure you agree that portion sizes are often for people who don’t want to enjoy their food 😀

  6. megan @ the oatmeal diaries

No judging here! Those fries look fabulous. I love how you called it Anti-Atkins!!

  7. Freya

I’m not 100% sure what chipotle is…but they still look delicious! They look like Twiglets :/
It’s kinda not the same..but I can get through a 500g bag of parsnips in one sitting, jsut about 😛 roasted of course! It’s the best 😛

  8. Julia

Uhh you know those huge bags of Simply Naked Pita Chips from Costco?? I can eat WAAAY too much of that family sized bag in one sitting!
And don’t worry, you are the healthiest eater ever. No judgment! Maybe your bod just craved some extra Vitamin A!

  9. scatterbrainjane

This is totally normal- I made a whole bag of brussels sprouts and demolished the whole thing. I am known to do this with M&Ms too 🙂 Life’s to short- eat the whole damn bag! 😉

  10. libby

It happens! I don’t even want to get into the dark chocolate peanut butter cups from Trader Joes that i tend to over-indulge on…..

  11. Trisha

me alone with a jar of almond butter is NEVER a good thing.

  12. Abby

I would only judge you if you said you went out and clubbed a baby seal after finishing off that bag of deliciousness. Please! We all do it, and good lord, it was basically a bag of baked and seasoned vegetables. Yum 🙂

Granola is one of those things I need to eat and then put away. It’s entirely too easy for me to mow through a box. *shrug* It could be worse.

  13. Michelle

The last time I did it with packaged foods (a couple years ago), I felt so so sick that I think I have an aversion for life to finishing entire packages in one sitting. Granted, it was not the potato chips’ fault that I got sick, but the entire personal pizza + 3 pieces of funfetti cake I downed afterwards…eeeek…just thinking about it makes me nauseous! However, I have been known to devour a 2 pound sweet potato + whatever the rest of my dinner happens to be, usually a huge salad and a veggie side, on occassion.

  14. Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen

I ate the remaining half a jar of peanut butter last night with a spoon.

I looked down and “oops” it was gone.

  15. Katie

I think you’re the healthiest eater I know…a bag of (delicious looking) sweet potato fries isn’t going to sway my opinion one bit. 🙂

I ate a whole box of peanut butter pretzels at school the other day. A student brought them to me, and I just couldn’t stop. I didn’t even have time to take a picture of them – I inhaled them that quickly.

  16. Kailey (SnackFace)

I read your post a few hours ago, and just NOW can I remember the last time I ate a whole bag/ almost a whole bag of something. This, I want to note, is a huge accomplishment because after restricting for so many years, it took me a long time to trust my gut (no pun intended). So when I would be like, “OK, Kailey, you can have this,” I’d eat the whole thing. I’d get lost in it. Even though I think it’s totally cool to eat the whole damn bag every now and then, I am proud that it took me forever to remember the last time it happened.

Which was last spring (wow, a year ago!) and it was a bag of peanut butter-filled pretzels. I recently bought them and had no urge to eat the whole bag at once. I have no idea how that happened–I just didn’t even think about it! I heard Portia de Rossi say on Oprah that her binge habits stopped when she stopped giving power to the food. As in, I can have whatever I want, whenever I want. And to be honest, I believe that may be what’s happened. Even if I were to eat a whole bag of something now, though, I’d be fine with it. Life and appetite move on!

Whoah totally sorry I just worked that all out in your comments section! Thank you!

  17. Jenny

Coconut peanut butter? Whaaa?! Omg I want 😀 And those fries look so crispy, yummm. No worries, we won’t judge you. I’ve been known to eat more ice cream in one sitting than most people

  18. Abby

Granola and raisins are my weaknesses for sure! Coconut pb? Holy yum! That sounds like the jam! Especially on Alvarado St. bread! I love that stuff! 🙂

  19. Kelsey @ Unmitigated Grub

No judgment! It happens to the best of us! And there are FAR worse things to eat a whole bag of than sweet potato fries!! Those look very tasty!

I’ve done it with cereal. I didn’t feel great afterward b/c I was way too full, but it happened. I felt a little guilty at the time, but now I think I would just move on, as dwelling on stuff like that is unproductive! C’est la vie, mon amie! 🙂

  20. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine

Last night- this morning, I ate almost an entire bag of granola by myself in about 12 hours. A friend had maybe a serving, and I threw maybe a serving out when I couldn’t finish the bowl I’d poured milk on, but yeah. I’m not gonna get worked up about it because it’s done now, but I’d like to be more mindful than that about eating in general!

  21. Anna

I think we’ve all been there at one point or another! I ate an entire box of cereal once and had one of those “wait a minute, who ate all my cereal?” moments. Ya, just me. All me. In one sitting. I wish I could tell you that the following day I woke up and ran that marathon I was OBVIOUSLY carbo-loading for. No. Not really. But hey, what can ya do! haha

  22. cbrady3

I’ve finished a bag of pita chips and a baking sized bag of dark chocolate chips by myself in two days. Does that count?

  23. Kady

Don’t worry about it, if you’re body craves a whole bag of fries once in a blue moon, go for it!

Also I wanted to update you on my coconut PB experience (I am the one that complained about the taste before). So I think I must have eaten something really sweet or uncomplimentry right before I had tried it the first time, because after being too scared to taste it again after that first experience, I finally did it (I wrote the company and also told them about the weird taste, and they wanted me to describe the taste so naturally I had to taste it again) and it was GOOD! I was like what the %$# and felt very embarassed! So since then, I have been experimenting with it and it turns out it is not just good but really good, especially warmed up or in a smoothie. Or mixed with some spice and spread on tofu and baked (adapted from you thai sauce recipe) 🙂 Also btw, tropical traditions customer service is stellar.

    Have a great weekend!

  24. Emily

I’ve polished off a little carton of coconut milk ice cream in one sitting before. It’s too easy. And that is why I only purchase it maybe once every three months or so.

  25. Michele

oh geez…i have portion control issues on the regular (usually on healthy eats). meh. at least ur were munching on sweet taters instead of sweet(s) 🙂

i love (like 6) pieces of toast with earth balance (on 3) and flavored PB on the other three…gotta have balance, right?!?!? lol. so yeh, that was about half a loaf of (9 grain) bread!

  26. Elizabeth @ RunWithSneakers

It just happens. I’ve purchased those same spicy sweet potato fries (Alexia) without reading the label. Fortunately for me, my husband helped me polish off the bag. They were gooooooood.

  27. wendy-frances

No-body has the place to judge any-body. And anyways, I ate an entire bag of popchips by myself. What, they were delicious with the glass (x2) of pinot…; )

  28. kay

those fries look dangerously delish – no wonder you couldn’t resist! i frequently eat entire bags of pirate’s booty by myself. sometimes “serving size” is really just more of a suggestion, right?

  29. elise

good to know, ill have to get on that!

  30. elise

i starred that recipe to make soon. i doubt ill want to share it either – haha

  31. elise

oh yeah….cereal and granola for sure…easy to polish off bowl after bowl after bowl!

  32. elise

i dont really know what exactly chipotle is either…haha…its spicy but with a bbq kind of flavor i guess?

  33. elise

epic last sentence. lifes also too short to worry about eating the whole damn bag.

  34. elise

oh my gosh, i had a disastrous (slash amazing) day/night with the costco sized stacy’s pita chips. they are so so addicting. its impossible to put them away.

  35. elise

ditto. with cereal. eh. life goes on.

  36. elise

serving size = bite in my world. hummus portions are a joke to me.

  37. elise

    now thats a wine pairing!

  38. elise

thats sounding JUST like my speed. EB and toast is sooo good. melty vegan buttah!

  39. Courtney

“When was the last time you opened and subsequently finished a package in one sitting?”

Ummm…every day? I am embarrassed about it, but totally–I seriously do this all. the. time. I guess I am glad to know I am not the only one? Eeek!

    Courtney

  40. actorsdiet

mmm i wanna go buy a bag now and eat it for dinner!

  41. MarathonVal

Haha I love this post because it’s been so much fun (and reassuring to my ego) to read the comments!! I have done similar things many, many times, but one of my least fiiner moments involved eating an entire bag of Newman’s Own Oreos in two different sittings on back to back nights… in less than 24 hours, that must be a record!

  42. elise

    thats really impressive. wow.

  43. elise

not alone. not alone at all.

  44. kissmybroccoli

I haven’t done it in one sitting (yet) but I got to snacking the other day on some FSTG cheddar flavored tortillas and a new jar of salsa…then I looked down and realized HALF the jar was empty…AND about a 1/4 of a GIANT bag of chips was gone! Oops!

I almost bought these the other day, but just couldn’t fork over $4 for a bag when I can just as easily pay less than a buck for a whole sweet potato and season it myself. After getting your take on them, I’m glad I went with my gut! (haha, pun!)

  45. Lindsay

I have that exact same bag of sweet potato fries in my freezer right now! (yay Costco!) I love love love them with BBQ sauce. I really don’t eat them any other way. Actually, thanks to this post, I’m about to go home and make them. 🙂

  46. Jessica

I definitely destroyed an entire bag of sour cream & onion Pop Chips in one sitting a few days ago. To rationalize it I told myself that bags are small…but yeah, won’t be buying them again for a while…or until I go to the store again.

  47. missymiller

Terra Chips….one more than one occasion…

  48. Ash

You definitely should not worry or felt bad about it. I felt kind of sad when I read your post that you felt that way!

You diet is overall very healthy. So what if once in a while you don’t eat just one “portion” of something that didn’t come directly from the earth?

And honestly, they were sweet potatoes. I don’t blame you LOL.

Besides, there a lot of worse things you could have eaten. Like…McDonald’s or something. (Not judging anyone who eats McDonald’s once in a while either though).

Anyway. Point is…No one should feel bad about their food choices or portions or judge others about it either.

Life is too short. And I’m glad you posted this! Makes me and others realize that we’re not alone when it comes to these types of situations.

  49. elise

dont worry ash! this post was intended to bring attention to that very fact – i am really healthy and i know it. i wanted to share with others that i DO disregard portion sizes and ditch my operation moderation mantra every once in a while too. i appreciate your support, but you dont have to feel sad. i dont feel guilty about it at all – the hesitancy to post about it was merely because i didnt want to come across like i am celebrating it. there is a fine line. the reason i dont mind sharing is because i dont frequently down pounds of potatoes in one sitting, but at the same time, i dont want others to mistake this as glamorizing binge eating. ya dig? 🙂

do you really need to ask me this? every. single. day.

p.s. while eating an entire bag of cinnamon sugar pretzel thins today i also watched emma. remember how we used to watch that movie over and over in college? good times.

miss you tons and love you lots and lots. xoxo

  52. Brown On Rice

I’m surprised there wasn’t any pre salting. 😉

  53. Sami

ugh. elise. i almost want to hate you. i made your black bean brownies on monday because i had off work, and i wanted to bring them as an extra credit assignment for my nutrition class on tuesday night. i made them and kept them safe from any sneaky fingers, but then on tuesday night when my class was cancelled due to absurd amounts of rain and flooding in my area, i polished off the entire batch for dinner (with the exception of two or three that i allowed the family to try). yes. embarassing. but you should know. they’re that yummy. and you are not alone 😀 hahaha. xoxoxoxo. you can read the post that i made them here if you’d like 🙂 i gave you all the credit, too. lol
