Since I already shared our living quarters with you, I’ll move on to the rest of the Buenos Aires fun.
After showering and cleaning off the airplane nasties we wandered the neighborhood [in search of an ATM and groceries].
By the time we returned home we were completely exhausted. At this point we had been awake for almost two days, but it was “only” 8 pm in BsAs and they don’t do dinner until way later than that.
To pass the time we munched on some appetizers (bread with camembert, nuts & olives) and watched the sunset.
I only seem to like olives when I’m in Spain (and now Argentina).
We held out until 9 and then walked to Quimbombo for our first meal in Argentina.
Who starts off a trip to the meat capital of the world with a vegan dinner? Hungry hungry hippies, that’s who.
Aside from being really fun to say, Quimbombo has an awesome menu – it’s vegan friendly with vegetarian and gluten free options (as well as few meat and seafood dishes). And it’s in a really fun part of Palermo.
We started with drinks.
I got a frozen ginger and vodka something-or-other which was basically the best thing ever. I couldn’t have designed a more Elise drink myself. I had to practice major restraint in slurping this down because it was sooooo good.
Fresh bread with home-made tomato sauce (way better than ketchup).
Falafel (con aderezo de yogurt).
Spring rolls (roll de papel de arroz rellenos).
Quesadilla Criolla (de queso fresco, parmesano, cebolla caramelizada, y mas).
Croquets (con una ensalada de quinoa).
As you can see we got a few dishes to split, although the cheesy quesadilla was all for Kyle and the quinoa plate was all mine.
Yum.
I was sad they were out of the seitan (the dish I originally ordered), but I was definitely glad to have a menu full of veg friendly options.
This was the perfect way to kick off our vacation. I left filled with optimism (and food); hopeful that the ability to find satisfying and delicious vegetarian meals in Argentina would continue.
Here’s a view from inside the restaurant. It was very nice. Friendly and helpful staff. Inside and outside options. Multiple levels with casual and romantic settings.
And although you may not be able to tell from the photo, the menu indicated next to each dish whether it was vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, or could be made such.
WOW to the sunset
I hope you continue to enjoy and share the trip. Food looked intriguing — I mean that in a good, “wow that would be fun to try” kind of way. Peace.
