Coooookie crisp

Remember that commercial?  It was for that hideously unhealthy dessert disguised as a cereal?  These cookies have nothing to do with that reference, I just randomly thought of it when I began typing this post.

A while ago I received a box of desserts from WOW Baking Company, a wheat and gluten free operation redefining what that means for cookies and brownies.

I reviewed a few of the individually packaged cookies previously, but have saved the last few for a post all of their own.  Because the company uses real butter, my dairy-free stomach wasn’t too tolerant.  Fortunately, my family was more than willing to step up to the plate in the taste testing department.  Trust me, it didn’t require much arm twisting…

My dad went for the Chocolate Chip.

As is the case with all the WOW goodies, the cookies were free of hydrogenated oils, refined sugars, artificial flavors, and of course wheat and gluten.  But that definitely doesn’t mean they were bland.  As far as individually packaged cookies go, they were surprisingly moist.  My dad was pretty content with the chocolate chip flavor.  What he wasn’t content with was the fact that one cookie was two servings.  I have to agree.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, making one item more than one serving is bull$h!t.  Who eats half a cookie?  WHO!?!?!

I would turn to the FDA or the USDA on this matter, but Lord knows that corrupt backwards organization won’t do jack.  Have they even updated the nationally advised food pyramid from the 90’s?  Ok, I’m getting way off track here…back to the cookies.

The Snickerdoodle flavor was tasted by Kyle.

I think this was one of the more so-so flavors.  He said it was good, but he didn’t seem overly thrilled about it.  It had the basic sugar cookie syndrome.  Like the Jennifer Aniston of cookies.  Vanilla.

The last flavor, Ginger Molasses, was also tried by Kyle.  He’s quite the cookie monster.  🙂

He loved that the inside of this one had gooey molasses in it.  It made the cookie really chewy.  It’s impressive that a packaged gluten free cookie can maintain such moisture.  It’s no wonder they named their company “wow” because that’s the response that most people would have when trying this flavor.  WOW Baking Co. deserves major props for accomplishing that.

This was also the thickest of all the cookies, which in my opinion is one of the most aesthetically pleasing things a dessert can have goin’ on.  I feel like that last sentence could be straight out of a rap song…what can I say, I like my brown sugar thick.

In addition to the individually packaged cookies, Wow Baking Co. sells the Oregon Oatmeal cookie by the box.  Ummm, dangerous!!!

This was one of the cookie flavors I did try myself (before realizing there was way too much dairy to simply ignore), so I can say with semi-authority, it is most definitely the best cookie they make.  Which is obviously why it gets the special treatment.

It’s my dessert in a box.  As I said before, these are definitely not your average oatmeal cookies.  The dried cranberries and apricots set it apart from more traditional oatmeal raisin recipes.

Kyle, again, volunteered his taste buds for these.  He had nothing but great things to say…unfortunately I had a hard time making them out because his mouth was full.  Unlike the individually packaged cookie, the box has 4 servings of mini cookies (which is probably about 4-5 cookies?).  Since Wow Baking Co. has a clear handle on gluten free goods, perhaps they should set their sights on making a vegan treat.  Sadly, the butter, eggs, and cream in these eliminates them from my diet.  Kyle couldn’t be more pleased about that…

Thanks again to WOW Baking Co. for giving me my family a chance to review these cookies.  They were definitely impressed.  So for all the non-vegans that are gluten-free out there, give this company a shot.  After all, gluten-free shouldn’t mean flavor-free.

I used to want that cereal SO bad when I was little! Needless to say my healthy hippie mom would NEVER have bought it for me, lol 🙂

And just FYI, yes, they have updated the food pyramid since the 90s 🙂
