It’s fig season!

I just realized I finally have the answer to the question “what is your favorite fruit?” which someone asked me last month and I couldn’t answer. I love berries so much, particularly strawberries. But bananas are the most versatile. A smoothie without a frozen banana is not even close to as good. But that’s a lame answer right? I also love melon and stone fruit. But are they favorite worthy? Nahhh. That title is reserved for figs. Green figs if I am being picky. Fortunately we have a TON of fig trees all over Davis…. Read more >

Camp grandma and grandpa

In the absence of any other “real” camps, my parents offered to take the kids for a few days (TWO nights!) so Kyle and I could get some time alone – both together and separately. It was GLORIOUS. Similar to the last time they spent the night at camp grandma and grandpa, I spent a ton of the time doing housework and organizing (boring stuff I know). But wow oh wow was it nice to tackle everything. The biggest treat was that we ordered takeout both nights! First takeout in for-eh-ver. This is our thai… Read more >

Fantastic four legumes

Here are four quick and easy ways to enjoy beans and lentils, that I think you will love. This lentil recipe is here on the site because it’s one of my all time faves. This time I paired it with home-made bread and a kale salad. The greens were massaged in a tahini lemon dressing and then I added some leftover roasted sweet potatoes. Per usual, I doubled the lentils and the tahini dressing. Actually, I think I tripled the dressing. Two days later I was able repurpose them into a semi new dish… This… Read more >

Bowls

This is the California chicken salad bowl from the “bowls” cookbook by America’s Test Kitchen. It was one of the best meals we’ve had in the past few months, but it was not exactly the simplest thing to throw together. Sometimes grain and/or salad bowls are a lot of work due to all the different components. This one was deceptively so. To prep, you have to saute broccoli, bake chicken, and make dressing. The dressing was SO good! I love creamy herby dressings. The book has a ton of different sauces and dressings in the… Read more >

Meatball meals

A frozen bag of beef meatballs can really be helpful when it’s 4:30 pm and you have yet to sort out your dinner plans. Grab some veg from the fridge and you’re on your way… I got this super random bag of stir fry mixed veggies for cheap on imperfect foods. I realized once it arrived why it was so inexpensive – it was 50% broccoli stalks. Oh well. It was already chopped up, so I was happy to have one step taken care of. Two steps if you consider I didn’t have to bother… Read more >
