Nature’s Path allergy response

I recently contacted Nature’s Path, a brand I love and support, about their products and labeling. You see, they have some awesome looking gluten free products (cereals mainly) that I’d love to buy for P as an infrequent “treat” option.  It’s hard to make my own everything, so I’m being honest and acknowledging the fact that it may not be the “hippie”-est of things, but it’s realistic.  Thus far I haven’t really given patty-cakes much in the way of prepared food because of the risks of cross contamination, but I fear his meals are getting boring… Read more >

Newman’s Own allergy info

Despite the fact that my sidekick doesn’t actually like tomatoes (despite his repeated trials with our garden’s sweet 100s) I spent last week trying to find a marinara sauce that was safest for him to eat.  This meant doing research and emailing companies, not taste testing. As a label reader, I was surprised that I was unaware of certain ingredients in my food!  I’ve bought Newman’s Own marinara in the past and although I can’t recall which flavor, several contain SOYBEAN OIL in them!  Super weird in my opinion, but I guess I never looked out for soy in the past… Read more >

Molasses as a sweetener

If you want to make 1 1/2 loaves of banana bread (one large, one small) here’s the recipe.  Alternatively, you could make one loaf and some muffins.  Not sure how the cooking time would vary for those but I’m just throwing it out there because I made this recipe and it had too much for one loaf but was still perfect and definitely worth sharing. Rather than applesauce as a sweetener, I used molasses.  It’s subtly sweet but the body treats it way different than sugar.  Almost everything I bake I make suitable for pacman and while… Read more >

Chickpea smuggler

Here are some updates on how it’s going feeding a toddler with allergies (since I know several mamas like these posts) and he seems to be thriving. I snuck beans into my child’s diet and they weren’t even baked or blended into something making them unrecognizable.  Nope.  I simply changed the texture by roasting them and voila!   The kid eats beans. For now. 😛  (there are a few ways to roast them but I did 450 degrees F x 25 minutes just tossed in a little olive oil) Like I mentioned in a previous… Read more >

My highlights: week 28

Just some random photos from the week that made me happy.   I brought this Tiger Salad to a BBQ on Saturday (only I nixed the sesame for allergen purposes). I love my mandolin for slicing cukes!  It’s so fast and fun to take down a whole vegetable in seconds. Mama snuggles. In a clockwise fashion: massive salad with hemp seeds and all the veggies; cake farewell; banana bread; 105 degree weather treats. Buying massive amounts of bananas at Costco certainly has it’s perks. Chard from the garden, stays fresh in my vejibag. Top dog. Getting in… Read more >
