I had to divide this into eight (8!!) portions to grind. 16 ounces of Starbucks Christmas blend later I had grounds from wall to wall in the kitchen and my hands were permeated with the delicious aroma of java. Good thing you can’t absorb caffeine intradermally. Or can you? I just found out our apartment in Buenos Aires has a coffee maker. I’m SO looking forward to Argentinean roasts. Can you tell my one-track-mind is completely vacation focused? I still have a couple more work shifts, so I’m doing everything I can to keep my… Read more >

The flood actually started Sunday morning, and after four unreturned calls to our landlord we took matters into our own hands and began calling plumbers. Apparently Sundays aren’t ideal for your pipes to burst because we called every plumber in Santa Monica and nobody returned our calls…until 30 minutes later. We finally got one guy to agree to come look at the sink…after putting down a $100 deposit. He didn’t arrive until 75 minutes later. At that point we had several drenched towels and one full a$$ bucket. He “worked” on the leak for… Read more >

In case you were wondering, the Whole Foods on the westside have finally restocked their candied ginger supply, so this is their brand (as opposed to the Trader Joe’s kind that I’ve been hoarding for the past few months). Whole Foods’ ginger is crystallized, so there is more sugar, but it’s also spicier. I prefer the spicy kind. Check it. A mitten shaped piece! After I had sated my sweet tooth, I made food for… Read more >

It took me 3 hours to decide on what to order from Real Food Daily. It’s hard! There are raw dishes that bring me to an infant-like drool state, as well as comfort meals that make me feel all warm and cozy inside. Gah! What to choose?? In the end I went with the BBQ tofu chop salad, with “seasonal vegetables, barbeque tofu, shredded cashew cheese, romaine, and ranch dressing”, which I bulked up with some pricey extras, including blackened tempeh and avocado. To be honest, the salad wasn’t overly thrilling. I wasn’t expecting the… Read more >

Each day when I get to work I am assigned a cell phone with my own extension (all the nurses and care partners are). I have the phone with me for all 12 hours of my shift. Everyone has my number. Everyone. Sometimes, it’s a bit much. Case in point… Radiology: Is patient X able to come down for his PA/LAT now? Does he need oxygen? Any isolation? Patient room: Can I get pain meds? Lab: Critical value for patient Y, their PTT is 121 [yikes!] Pharmacy: The medication order for patient Z needs clarification,… Read more >
