Montezuma

I regret to inform you all that my recent absence was totally unavoidable… [Don’t read this next part if you don’t want to hear the dirty digestive deets] 1.5 days after I got back from Mexico I was knocked on my ass (literally) by Senor Montezuma.  If you’re wondering why the onset of this Mexican bug was so delayed…welcome to my GI tract.  I knew something was amiss the day we flew home, but it wasn’t until Friday that I was cursing my gut and running to the toilet every 5 to 30 minutes.  So. … Read more >

Berries & See’s

I woke up the other morning with the most extreme craving.  It was strawberry specific, but we didn’t have any strawberries in the house.   So I tried to make do with what we did have.   It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great either.  I don’t even really remember what went into this because I just kept adding things as I found them, but here’s what I do know it had: POM juice Amazing Grass orange dreamsicle almond milk frozen raspberries chia seeds ice Because I added so much liquid in the beginning, I… Read more >

Philly: Veg Eats

Sweet Freedom Bakery is Philadelphia’s first (and only) allergen friendly bakery. It’s on South Street (between Broad and 15th). The sign says it all right – vegan, soy free, egg free, kosher, gluten free, peanut free, corn free, no refined sugar, casein free, wheat free…you get the point.  Basically, they have delicious baked treats for people with wacky GI systems (like me!). They were featured on the Cooking Channel’s Food(ography) and the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.  Cool huh! So I went a little crazy. 🙂 Here’s a full list of what they offer (ps they… Read more >

Orange Julius

When I was in junior high, we had an elective called MASH.  It was made up of four subjects that we would rotate through over the year, one per quarter.  I can’t remember what the first two letters stood for (how pathetic!), but the “S” was for shop and the “H” was for home ec.  The reason I remember these is because they were the most impressionable.  I’d never touched a sanding machine and I had no clue how to sew before those classes.  In shop I made a jewelry box and a door knocker… Read more >

Svelte smoothie

Since becoming veg(ish), I’ve been trying to teach Kyle about nutrition so he gets adequate amounts of everything – macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc.  It’s not that it’s hard to do when you’re avoiding meat, it’s just that he doesn’t have a health background and he’s new at it.   In addition to listening to Jillian’s podcasts, he’s been reading Brendan Brazier’s books…along with this book that I just got him. Becoming Vegan (the GI one is for my own research) So anyway, he’s been tracking his protein intake which made me think about my own… Read more >
