The tally

Elise 1.  Night shift 1. Monday’s night shift was fine.  But last night’s had a few hiccups.  It started off well enough (same patients, same routine) but after my lunch sleeping break at 3 am, I got busy.  Downside: One of my patients decided to stop breathing (which is never good). Upside: The hours between 3 and 6 am FLEW by.   Leading up to work I had a nice day.  After biking back from work, I showered and crawled into bed, where I promptly dozed off for a solid four hours. When I woke… Read more >

It may not be summer, but I’m still roasting

Ok, I know.  It’s semi-odd to be roasting winter squash in June, right?  But I had a butternut and delicata squash hanging around the kitchen and figured I better seize the day. So I hacked my way into them, lubed the skin down with coconut oil, and popped ‘em in the oven at 375. I made sure to salvage the seeds to roast too.  They are loaded with iron and (quite frankly) delicious.  Those didn’t get coconut oil though.  They were sprayed with PAM and sprinkled in salt.  Nada mas, nada less. I’ve seen this game going around, and since I’m a fan of such activities, I’m going to give it a go too! A is for Apple, what’s your favorite variety? Galaaaaa.  Can’t you tell by their unwavering presence in my daily eats?  I have two a day minimum.  My record is over a dozen in one day.  Just as between meal snacks, mind you.  Yes, I like apples.  A.  Lot. B is for Bread, regardless of nutrition, calories, or whole grains what is your favorite type to have a nice big piece of? Well, whole… Read more >

Packing for 24 hours and multiple layovers

The art of packing food is my specialty.  Much like making my daily work eats (tutorials here), packing food for traveling is a bit of a craft.  Some may find it easier to buy meals at the airport rather than go through the hassle of taking extra baggage through security.  Personally, I’m not one of those people.  I don’t care if it adds 25 pounds of dead weight that I have to schlep by plane, train, and automobile, for me it’s SO worth the energy.  The cost to benefit analysis probably differs depending on your… Read more >

Larabars for you

I didn’t get a lunch sleep break last night because there was a code on the unit right when my break should have been.  Clearly a patient’s life trumps my snooze time, so I just kept powering through the night sans rest.  It was a long code (holy chest compressions batman!) and the third of the night in the hospital, but it ended with a beating heart and oxygenated blood, and that’s all you can hope for, right?  Right.  I had a delicious dinner packed up. The salad had spinach, sprouts, farro (love!), hummus, bell… Read more >
