Protein pesto

Admittedly basil isn’t my favorite herb.  Over the years, you may have noticed how infrequently I make Italian recipes… This isn’t a fluke.  Garlic, oregano, rosemary, onion, and other such flavors just don’t whet my palate.  But I do have a thriving basil plant.  And I do enjoy raw pates.   So it would only seem natural to find a way to unite these two things.  Right?   My goals in making a raw pesto were the following: (a) to make it only minimally reminiscent of a true pesto (b) to make it protein packed (c)… Read more >

Lacking wisdom and solids

Last week I was Kyle’s designated driver.  Happy hour with the guys?  Nope. Getting up before the sun is the opposite of a happy hour.  Especially when you are driving a grumpy patient who hasn’t eaten in several hours.  I didn’t want to rub in my ability to drink, so I held off on the coffee. After Kyle went into the procedure, I went to the family waiting area.  I had planned on walking to Starbucks, but the nurse came to get me a mere 15 minutes later.  Speedy surgeon much? Caravan of (live) dreams

Not surprisingly, my cookie breakfast didn’t hold my appetite at bay for very long.  When halftime of the first round of football games hit, Kyle and I headed to lunch.   I had to show Kyle the menu for this place before he agreed to go because the name of the restaurant really scared him.  I’ll admit, Caravan of Dreams is on the moon goddess fairy dream weaver end of the hippie spectrum…but the food makes up for the “out there” nature of the name.  They offer a variety of vegan and raw courses, but… Read more >

Jetlag with a side of chocolate

I am back in LA, even though I have yet to finish recapping my time in NYC. We got back late the other night, so I figured with the time change I would sleep in a bit more than usual.  Wrong. I got a bunch of random errands done in the morning though, which meant when my sister arrived at 11 for brunch I wasn’t a total scatterbrain.  This is the sister who has been traveling the world for the past 6 months…and she’s only been back for a week, but has already booked a… Read more >

Bonobo’s on the brain

After a wonderful morning of sleeping in, running in the park, and brunching at Joe, I headed downtown to pop into my old office.  I just wanted to say hello to some of my friends from work.    And by “office”, I mean hospital.  And by “some of my friends” I mean two people.  Because almost everyone else has quit since I left.  I had been texting with them the days leading up to my trip, so I knew they’d be working that day…but I didn’t anticipate anyone else caring that I was coming… Read more >
