Hospital, take-out, & home-made (food from the first two weeks post-partum)

The first couple of weeks have flown by.  It’s what everyone said would happen, and it is definitely the truth. The food in the hospital was okay.  [I work at the same place I gave birth to P so I know exactly where the menu and cafeteria excel and fall short] Whoever told me the first meal after birth would be the best thing I ever ate lied.  I didn’t take a photo of it, but I got two slices of french toast and a banana.  Remember how much I adore the hospital’s french toast? … Read more >

Happy Meals

I dunno if you guys want ideas but here are some of the latest and greatest (?) from the hippie kitchen.    Kale salad with candied nuts, dried cranberries & smoky lemon tahini dressing.   1 large bunch of kale, washed, de-stemmed, ripped into bite sized pieces 1/3 cup dried cranberries 1 cup candied nuts (I used almonds and pecans) Bon Appetit’s Smoky Lemon Tahini Dressing – I halved it and added 1 tbsp of both miso paste and maple syrup   Wednesday was national frozen yogurt day (uhhh, that’s a thing??) so Menchie’s was… Read more >

A day in the life…

Of a very pregnant (over 40 weeks and counting!) lady…on maternity leave… Wake up 4+ times throughout the night.  Finally get up for good some time between 6-8 am. Drink weak tea with almond milk and maple syrup.  Wonder how much longer til you can guzzle caffeine again.   Make breakfast #1.  A bowl of oats with nut butter & bananas.  I usually have half the banana at a time since it seems to give me reflux now (realistically everything does).  Play on the computer.  Respond to emails and blog comments.  Make & prep food… Read more >

Staying savvy at Costco

How smart is Costco?  I mean, they charge for membership.  Then they entice you with samples.  And they have EVERYTHING.  All for a cheaper price than you’d find (almost) anywhere else. But here’s the downside.  You don’t need a 10 pound block of cheese or 50 veggie burgers at once.  Unless you’re about to cater a party, for vegetarians, that’s an insane amount of food to have at your house.  And really, who has enough fridge/freezer space for that?  So how do you use Costco (or Sam’s Club or whatever bulk store you shop at)… Read more >

Home for the Holidays behind the scenes

I was going to call this sights unseen, but I took photos, so obviously it CAN be seen! Here are a few things that didn’t quite deserve a spot in the two-a-day challenge, but were still worth sharing. Snack of vegan and gluten free champs.  Mary’s Gone Crackers and Daiya cheddar wedge. Runner up snack: La Boulange bread with avocado and salt.   Dad showing his Sabra love.  Balsamic Brussels (for the Christmas Eve caroling party). My parents’ freezer (aka proof of where I get my OCD tendencies and caffeine addiction).  They’re Peet’s devotees, particularly… Read more >
