mexican food

Chef Tanya’s nachos

Way too much food for four people.    For no reason, a group of us went to Native Foods for dinner the other night. I’ve been to the Palm Springs, Costa Mesa, and Westwood locations, but not the Culver City one. I forced myself to try something new, which was hard since I love the scorpion burger and kale macro bowl a lot.   Kyle and I ordered the Nuevo Native Nachos to split…which was a blessing and a curse.   O.M.F.G.HIJKLMNOP… Fantastic.  If you go to Native Foods, I command you to order… Read more >

Day 5: Mimosas & Mexican

We’d been looking forward to using our juicer since we first saw that the apartment had one.   Not for juice…for mimosas!!    Duh.  Don’t you know how much I love champagne?  It’s really the only way I drink OJ.   Actually, fresh squeezed juice is exempt from that previous statement.   Here’s the problem.  I had just gotten back from the gym, so I was already slightly dehydrated.  On top of that I hadn’t had anything for breakfast yet.  Can you tell where I’m going with this?? I got waaaasted. Ha.  :)  It was… Read more >

Sunday night family dinner

It’s impossible for me to forget about our weekly cooking dates because Kyle entered them in our joint google calendar.  So I get reminders emailed and texted to me when it’s time.  He’s almost as type A as I am… [Fact: I’m only pretending I don’t find it attractive.  In reality, I love his nerdy traits more than anything – I just don’t want it to go to his head.] So anyway…Kyle’s parents came to visit and I cooked them dinner.    Happy Birthday Kevin! The (vegan, gluten free) menu: Stuffed Bell Peppers Creamed Corn… Read more >

What do you call cheese that’s not yours?

Nacho cheese!  <— cringe   Last week I decided it wasn’t worth it to make bagels from scratch.  Buying them is fine by me.  Tortilla chips, on the other hand, are now going in the “home-made” column.    Easy – yes.  Delicious – yes.  Cheap – yes.  I’m not joking, this was probably the most simple and tasty thing I’ve “made” in a while. Did I mention how cheap they were?   A bag of 100 corn tortillas from Costco set me back a whole $2.99.  They are made by Guerrero, and when I researched… Read more >

That’s so last year

I’m all about renting cabins for New Year’s Eve (mellow setting, cheap booze, BYO food, super simple non-existent clean up…what’s not to love!?).  Usually we alternate between Lake Tahoe and Napa, but this year we changed it up. There are a few different ways to get to Clearlake.  We chose the wrong one.    Do you see those curves?!?  As someone who gets motion sickness very easily, this was a rather unpleasant drive.  We had to pull over a few times because I thought I was going to lose my lunch.  Not fun. Eventually we… Read more >
