Local take-in

Even though we live blocks away from some of the finest veg-friendly establishments in LA, who can deny the fun in being 100% lazy.  Vegging on the couch in PJs with dinner from Real Food Daily.  Yes please.   On the left: Kyle’s RFD burger with the works. On the right: my Salisbury seitan with mashed potatoes and gravy.   Since it’s hard to tell what the burger looks like in the container, here’s a zoom of it (mid-grub).  Or you could see his order in this post.  He sure loves that burger. We each… Read more >

His and hers lunches

I probably make or pack Kyle’s lunches 75% of the time.  He only eats on campus a few days a week and every once in a while it aligns with my work days.  Which means…   I can pack both of our food the night before and kill two birds with one stone. His differ in that they often have cheese and packaged health bars, but otherwise they are very similar.    I made his salad with spinach, tomatoes, falafel, sunflower seeds, and parmesan.   While mine had quinoa instead of cheese.    My breakfast… Read more >

Four day weekend [part 1]

Is there anything better than a long weekend?  Yes.  And that’s a long weekend house dog sitting here. With sunny weather, golf course views, and a well stocked fridge, there’s no reason to venture further than the community pool.  Agreed? We drove down to San Juan Capistrano on Thursday evening and stayed through Monday.  Some friends joined us for part of the time.  We cooked.  We ate.  We drank.  We relaxed.  The weekend may as well be titled “blissful nothingness”.  It was perfect. When we first arrived, the priority was dinner.  That’s what 3 hours… Read more >

All work

And no play makes Elise a repetitive eater. Rather than subject you all to the same exact meal (times twenty), I’ll show my hippie bowl once and move on to my work food. Quinoa, carrots, spinach, seitan, avocado, nutritional yeast, Bragg’s aminos. After a few bad days, where I was carelessly eating wheat and agave (FODMAPs no-no) like it was going out of style, I knew I needed to get my GI tract back on track. Feeling bloated (and a bunch of other less-internet friendly terms) is the worst. So! I did what I know… Read more >

Philly: Old Nelson on the go

After brunch, my parents had to head to the airport, but Kyle and I still had a few hours to kill. We filled the time with a long stroll through campus followed by a trip to the 30th street train station.  We bought SEPTA tickets to the airport and food for the flight.  I’m sorry (but not really?) to say, I didn’t make into a Wawa over the weekend.   For non-Philly readers, I’d liken the chain to 7-Eleven, but for me the nostalgia of getting both coffee and soft pretzels is what makes the… Read more >
