Lovely lentils

This recipe is long overdue.  It’s so good I’d recommend abandoning your current dinner plans and making this instead.  You won’t regret it. I first started with a dry lentil stew mix, which I soaked overnight to decrease the cooking time.  The mix had multiple kinds of beans (black, white, soy, kidney, pinto), lentils, and barley. After soaking, the 1 cup of dry mix grew to nearly triple it’s original size!   Once cooked, the yield was just over 3 cups.  Meanwhile I pulsed walnuts in the food processor.  I wanted them to be more… Read more >

A “soul sistas” Superbowl

A little background:  Kyle’s parents are fabulously open-minded when it comes to food.  My veganism has never been an obstacle when dining with them, and has in fact been embraced with open arms.  It’s always a blast eating with them.  Whether we are feasting out or cooking in, they go above and beyond to make sure there are delicious vegan options available at all times.  Much to my delight, they kicked off 2011 with the Daniel Fast, a plant-based eating plan (combined with the spiritual component of prayer).  After 21 days, the results from this… Read more >

Crash and burn

My second night shift came and went without incident.  It was pretty much a dream 12 hours.  I staggered my way to the parking garage and arrived home just before 8 am to pass the car off to my better half (as in, the half that doesn’t crash the car).  Oh, did I not mention my little accident?  Twitter followers may have read the news, but for those who aren’t in the loop, I suck at driving.  Don’t worry, I’m being slightly dramatic (I’m fine).  The passenger side door, on the other hand, wasn’t so… Read more >

Lucky peas

Isn’t there some good luck thing with black eyed peas and the new year?  I swear I recall some tradition of the sort.  It’s still January, so I think this recipe counts. [Edited to add: I just looked this up to confirm that eating black eyed peas on New Year’s Day is in fact a good luck tradition, as they are supposed to bring prosperity] Better late than never right? I’ve always had a weird fascination with black eyed peas.  The black and white thing is creepy to me.  Don’t they look evil?  There’s a… Read more >

Merry Millennium

Happy holidays everyone! It’s Christmas up in here 🙂 I’m working on the 25th, so Santa was nice and obliging and came early this year (this post is from the 21st). To celebrate as a family, we all went to dinner in the city. In spite of the gross weather, we headed into San Francisco early to browse the Ferry Building, check out the tree (in Union Square) and grab some drinks at the famous Harry Denton’s Starlight Room.  Views of the Ferry Building… Making our way to Union Square… SF love   After soaking… Read more >
