Buncha Bowls

Odds and ends salad for lunch…

  • kale (from the garden)
  • home-made balsamic vinaigrette
  • roasted salmon
  • avo
  • candied pecans
  • cherries

It’s CHERRY season people!!

I picked this first little cup full (from a single branch) after a morning run to see if they were ready and they were!! So then I sent the kids out with Kyle later that morning and they came back with this!

WHOAAAAAA.

Cherry heaven <3  The kids are FINALLY old enough to get the pits out by themselves.  THANK GOODNESS.  It’s made my life so much easier and my finger nails are no longer pink for two straight months.  Hooray.

You can’t tell how big of a scoop of sun dried tomatoes I use, but the jar is basically three servings, so that should give you an idea.  I use all the flavored olive oil too of course because that helps lube up the greens even better.

Caesar lover right here.

I treated myself to a TJs prepared salad because I was having a day.  Sometimes all it takes is a $4 salad and I’m back on track.  I should remember that more.  I am always so hard on myself for buying prepared things and really try to avoid packaged stuff because I know I could just make it myself. But its nice to have the option…so I should take it when it’s available.  The same cannot be said for Starbucks.  I am only allotted ONE DRINK PER WEEK there and this (self appointed) rule is super important because if I slip up, I slip hard and next thing I know I’m at the drive through every single day.  Oh hey, did you want a glimpse into crazy Elise’s brain???  Sorry.  Come back out to the light and let’s carry on.

Taco night slash taco bowl night.  The bowl being for moi because I wanted chips instead of a shell.  Shells are overrated (said one person ever – me).  But it’s true!  They are just so meh.  If I want something crunchy I want it to be salty as hell.

The cotija cheese was a good start in the sodium department, but the Siete chips finished off the job quite nicely.

I’ve now tried every flavor of the chips and I can’t really decide which I like best…this was my first time having the nacho ones and they’re probably the mot flavorful (duh).  The lime ones were good everyday chips because sometimes the sea salt ones didn’t have enough oomph.  But sometimes you want a plain chip, so sea salt is good for that.  I dunno.  Kinda an indecisively lame review I guess.  Basically they all serve different purposes and I could get behind any one of them at a given moment.

This is another TJs prepared salad, which I bought to bring to farmer’s market (rather than buy food there). I think I mentioned before that we have been uninspired by the limited selection at picnic in the park (it’s been the exact same for five years – could we get something new already!?) so Kyle and I decided to do take out on those days.  Well plans got crazy and we ended up being too busy to make it to market, so we just ate the bowls at home.

This is the lemon chicken and arugula salad with Israeli couscous…to which I added avo and roasted pecans.  With my additions it was delish!  I’m now craving spicy arugula so look for some recipes with it in the future!

I’m with you! Taco shells are overrated for sure 😉

Wait a second—you have a cherry tree?!? So jealous!! YUM! I get the annoyance of having to get the pits out—I had to do it last summer for G and I am assuming this summer as well. But it will be worth it because the only way I will get cherries is if I “share” with her 🙂 enjoy your cherry bounty!!

Growing up tacos were soft flour tortillas.
    Period.
So whoever decided that hard stale tasting fried corn tortillas that shatter and stab the top of your mouth were a good idea is just wrong.
I buy the corn/flour combo tortillas now but i always get corn at restaurants since our favorite spot in salinas makes those in house.
And you know what? You are worth *at least* one trader joe salad and one starbucks drink every damned day. 🙂
The question isn’t if you could make it yourself (of course you could), but if it will bring you joy and improve your quality of life that day.

I grew up with soft tacos, flour at home and corn at our favorite mexican spot that to this day makes their own fresh corn tortillas. The shells just taste like kinda stale big chips that then shatter and everything falls out!
Very exciting you’re done with cherry pitting duty, somehow I don’t like cherries myself (i blame cherry flavored medicine as a kid) but that’s awesome to go and just pick a bunch!
