Spanish cuisine is nothing new to me. In college, I studied abroad in Barcelona; and have returned to Spain several times since.
The country is amazing, so anyone who is considering traveling to Espana, go!
Truth be told, Spain’s national cuisine isn’t my fave, but the rest of what Spain has to offer is. I’ve always been lactose intolerant, so that part of my dietary accommodations hasn’t changed. But I ate fish previously, so being both meat and dairy free was new on this trip. For the most part, I found adequate options. They may have been somewhat limited (aka one choice or nothing) but I learned to go with it. Even if it wasn’t necessarily my first choice, that’s not really important. Travel doesn’t have to be all about food.
There’s always sangria! 🙂
Interestingly enough, my stomach was happy as a clam marisco while I was in Sevilla. Minimal GI woes to speak of. I brought along my usual digestive enzymes, but apart from that and lots of agua con gas, I didn’t need to make any dietary changes.
Are you guys ready for a recap of the rest of my European adventures? I found lots of great veggie fare (much more easily than in Paris), so for future vegan travelers planning on conquering Spain, I’ll share the best spots with you over the next few weeks.
Anyone else get the travel bug studying abroad?
Ohhh Spain! I traveled to Madrid in high school and I’ve always wanted to go back. I’d love to give Barcelona a shot, I hear it’s absolutely beautiful and I can’t wait to hear about your trip! As I think I mentioned before, I’m traveling to Italy and I’m pretty afraid of finding vegan options (read: non-cheesy pasta), but as you say here it’s not all about food!!
Wow, you studied in Barcelona? That is awesome! It is one of my favorite cities – such an amazing architecture and atmospehere! You are a lucky girl 🙂
I just got back about a month ago from studying in Barcelona!! 🙂 🙂
I miss it, and I’m excited to see & hear about your adventures! Yes, vegetarian and balanced food was somewhat challenging. I always kept fresh fruit and a jar of peanut butter on hand. Maoz was always delish. And right on with the sangria. If its cheaper than water, go for it!
FYI, they do have hummus @ El Corte Ingles and Mercadona.
Wow, your blog is so colorful, me gusta!
Definitely got the traveling bug, and right now its squirmy! I need to plan a trip 🙂
I went to Brazil for six months after graduating high school – not to study but just to be there a while, travel and learn Portuguese. I did do a summer travel/study program though UCLA though – three weeks in Southern Spain and one week in Morocco. The times I have spent traveling have been some of the best in my life so far.
I am getting the travel bug planning for my honeymoon. My fiance and I are blessed to have been given 2 weeks of timeshare stays pretty much anywhere, and it is SO hard to narrow it down.
Right now, Greece and Hawaii are the top 2, and I have totally been stalking your honeymoon recap for some tips/inspiration.
The perks of living in Europe is that Spain is just a plain ride of about a few hours away. I love Spain and I definitely love Spanish people. They’re much much nicer than the French. Though I prefer French cuisine. I went to Marbella in may and I ate a lot of paella. My fave:) My next destination is Bali, Indonesia! I will go during my christmas holiday:) When it’s snowing in Holland, I’ll be sitting in the sun. Love your blog so much!
Taking a masters course on the Mediterranean diet in Italy last summer gave me a serious travel bug. I’ve as yet to actually do anything about it, but I can’t wait to book some plane tickets and pack my bags : )
Spain is high up on the list, as is Greece. My boyfriend spent a semester in Ghana a few years ago and has talked it up so much I’m really curious to take a trip there too.
I definitely got the travel bug after studying abroad in Italy – and visiting Barcelona! I’m dying to go back to Spain and explore more cities so I can’t wait to read your recaps on all your Spanish adventures!
I went to Barcelona when I was 15 and it was the most amazing thing. I am completey fascinated with traveling. I wish I could have studied abroad tho.
oooh can’t wait to hear!!! I love Espana, too!
I totally got the travel bug when I studied abroad–but I haven’t had a lot of opportunities to go back! I have a very long list of places I want to go……
That first photo of you is so gorgeous! Is that anyplace special or just kind of par for the course in Barcelona?
Courtney
Lucky!! I’d love to visit a place like that! And I also love the sangria..that was my first ever drink as a 21 yr old and with my current boyfriend while we were on vacation so it has some fond memories behind it. 🙂
I can’t wait to read more about Spain! I’m studying abroad spring semester and will be living in Spain (along with Rome and Paris)!
I never studied abroad, but as soon as I finished my BScN, I decided to take two months to backpack across Europe! I missed Spain on that trip, but I had the most amazing time. I feel in love with Germany and Scotland, and plan to return sometime in the near future!
I’ve always wanted to go to spain! I was thiiis close to studying abroad in Sevilla my junior year, but then I chickened out. It’s on my list!
i went i spain last summer and loved it!!! i cant wait to go back!! the food though…..wasnt my favorite. i think the best thing i had there was tortilla.
