Berries & See’s

I woke up the other morning with the most extreme craving.  It was strawberry specific, but we didn’t have any strawberries in the house.

So I tried to make do with what we did have.

It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great either.  I don’t even really remember what went into this because I just kept adding things as I found them, but here’s what I do know it had:

  • POM juice
  • Amazing Grass orange dreamsicle
  • almond milk
  • frozen raspberries
  • chia seeds
  • ice

Because I added so much liquid in the beginning, I was forced to add a ton of frozen raspberries to get the consistency right.

Note to self: freeze almond milk ice cubes.

Anyway.  It was certainly different than my usual hot coffee routine.

Hello summer!  I love you.

The strawberry cravings stuck around well into the afternoon though, so later on when I was out and about, I swung by the Farmer’s Market and picked up these guys.

They were the fattest, juiciest, more gorgeous berries I’ve had all year.  Have I mentioned I love summer?

So I wasted no time sampling.  Man oh man, I could have eaten all 3 cartons right then and there.

$6 well spent.

Since I’d already had lunch, I didn’t feel the least bit guilty indulging in berries and chocolate for dessert.

Is it Valentine’s up in here or what??

A patient gave our unit a bunch of See’s Candies, so I took some home.  If there’s one thing I know my way around it’s a box of See’s Nuts & Chews.  Seriously, it’s something I have had plenty of practice with.

Growing up, we always got a big box for Christmas and begged my parents to let us have one after dinner each night.  They granted us permission every once in a while, but only one piece!  What this meant was we had only one shot at getting something good.  The pressure!!!  There were a few times I bit into one and put it back (rum nougat, no thanks!).  My parents weren’t thrilled about this, so my sisters and I started developing more stealth methods (inserting a toothpick in the bottom to see what the filling was).  Anyway.  The point is, I can now identify my favorites very easily (toffee, caramel, and marshmallow insides, mmmmm).

Dreamy.

Craving.  Satisfied.

Forrest Gump was partially right.  Life is like a box of chocolates.  You just have to put in a little effort to learn the tricks and then things will all work out. 🙂

hah! what a great post! I’m right there with you on the boxes of chocolate…it’s like you’ve got one shot- — don’t screw it up!!!!!! haha, i’ve had a couple boxes that actually had “chocolate maps” — those were real winners…kinda took the fun out though:) gotta love summer strawberries!

Farmers market strawberries are the best. So big, juicy and flavorful. They make supermarket berries taste like red water.

  3. Rachel

haha i used to do the same exact thing w/ a box of sees! you know you can get custom boxes….filled with your favorite picks! so dangerous……..but you never have to worry about picking the wrong one! 🙂

mmm, i bought a half flat of Hood strawberries this weekend. i cannot resist them!
and i would always do the bite and put back method when i was little; my parents didn’t like it either 🙂

I don’t think I’ve ever had See’s Candies, but those look AMAZING. You’re making me want to go out and buy a box of chocolates right now!

I wrote a comment on another thread and have since read your ‘about’ page where you clarify that you are not vegan, but do not eat meat or dairy. I think I will unsubscribe from your site, not because it isn’t wonderful, but because I get sucked into the things you cook or describe and then find I can’t eat them after all. Your beloved See’s candy, for example, has marshmallow (gelatin from dead animals), and caramel (sweetened condensed milk). I wish you luck on your journey to health.

Mmm. 🙂 Do you know if See’s sells boxes of just that marshmallow-y chocolate you showed? lol. That would be my favorite. I love your stealth mode toothpick trick. I always used to just take one bite and put the piece back if I didn’t like it. Especially if it was any of the fruit filled crap.

That is so hilarious about your stealthy chocolate-choosing as a kid. Ugh boy do I love See’s chocolates- you California people have all the great stuff!!

Also- 2$ a carton for strawberries???? What a steal!!!

I can easily put away a pint of strawberries in no time. They are just too dang good. Haha, I always hated those chocolate boxes actually because when I was little I only liked plain chocolate, so I basically never got the chocolate I wanted when I chose one.

Hahah…I like your spin on the Forrest Gump quote. Very true.

My grandmother worked for See’s! I loved that she could always tell us exactly what each piece was. Wish I could remember all the little hints, but I really can’t go wrong with a box of dark chocolate nuts and chews. I eat the nuts and the caramel, and leave the rest for my husband! Works for me…and for him, too!

OMG! Scotchmollow! My FAV from See’s! And those strawberries! I’ve been having the same hankering, that and grapefruit. Must be summer!

  13. Lou

Ha, love your sneaky tooth pick trick 😉

Strawberries, yum. We had these great ones a few weeks ago but right now i can’t find any decent ones – they’re all too watery and not nearly sweet enough- sad!

i know…when you buy all 3 cartons you get it cheaper…normally at the farmers market they are 250 per carton.

I absolutely LOVE amazing Grass products. I keep a small container of the orange dreamsicle and the lime energy mix at my desk. Plus I have the ORAC mix and berry flavors at home for smoothies 🙂

Catching up on blogs, obv. On a Saturday night. Don’t be jealous. Anyways, just have to say that scotchmallows are THE BEST SEES CANDY, PERIOD. We didn’t have Sees in Texas after about 1988, but one year for my bday, my Aunt sent me a whole box of just scotchmallows. One of my all-time favorite presents ever.

no judgment from me! im working nights and weekends, so im not exactly the prime example of living it up.
