About Elise

I’m a nurse. An exercise lover. A whole foods connoisseur. A health enthusiast. And I have IBS. No need to cue the sappy violin music yet... I’ve found that eating a mostly plant-based diet has allowed me to continue to live and love life to the fullest. Although moderation isn’t something I do well, I’m 100% devoted to giving my body pure, wholesome, quality food. Nutritious and delicious, all the time. Hungry Hungry Hippie is a way for me to share my daily dealings with food, fitness, and everything in between.

Drinking on the job

Before you all have collective heart attacks, no, I did NOT get sh!t faced while doing my nurse thang.  However, Saturday night WAS the cardiac surgery holiday party (aka open bar on the MDs tab).  Unfortunately for yours truly, I still had to work my 12 hour shift on Saturday…as well as the next day (Sunday).  Boo! I can think of about 15,000 other things I’d rather do after work than put on a dress and pretend that I feel pretty while I’m covered in a patient’s ventilator spew and C. diff.  Oh, and did… Read more >

Flashback (to) Friday

Please disregard how delayed my posting is…as this post is clearly from last Friday.  What can I say, this weekend was a crazy one! Festival ‘o Lights started today…oh the things I know from living in NYC working in a Jewish Hospital.  Why are there so many ways to spell Hanukkah?  Very confusing religion.  Shocker of all shockers.  I passed up my usual dose of caffeine this morning and instead opted for a huge cuppa cocoa.  I’m getting to be a bit obsessed with this beverage.  I’m not sure if it’s because Christmas time and… Read more >

Eat, work, run

Work it bay-bay. My pre-packed food included: THREE bars (PB cookie Larabar, Chocolate Brownie Z bar, and a Peanut Toffee Buzz Clif bar) TWO apples …and a partridge in a pear tree ONE ginorm salad Like an onion, this sh!t had layers and layers: steamed kale, broccoli, BN squash, cannellini bean, cherry toms, and raisins – I added Bragg’s apple cider & liquid AA’s to it, too.  The spelt pretzels were the perf accompaniment (as anything with salt is). For the record, I skipped my AM starbeezies and brought my own tea bags (and I… Read more >

13 is a lot of beans

I blasted music from the Nutcracker all morning long, and it actually made the horrible weather not seem so bad.  I’ll have to remember that trick for the future… Frothy coffee and an english muffin stuffed with peanut butter helped, too.  But what REALLY warmed my heart was all your sweet comments on my weighty post.  You guys are so awesome.  Seriously.  It’s always nerve racking to put yourself out there, but I am continually amazed by the overwhelmingly supportive and positive comments.  Gah.  You guys are too much! Anyways, after breks, I cuddled up… Read more >

A weighty post

J’adore all the recent commenters! Keep delurking peeps, it’s great hear from ya :)  My love cup is full (yes, I just quoted Vicki, cringe).  After the (above) overflowing frothy cuppa java, I was at a serious crossroads.  I wanted more caffeine, but I also wanted chocolate.  Such a dilemma!    Solution: MOCHA!  I combined coffee, Chatfield’s cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and agave nectar.  It was heavenly.  I mistakenly took a sip before taking a photo (which was only a mistake because it was SO dang good that half the cup was in my tummy… Read more >
