Australia: weekend in Watson’s Bay

After Chris and Laura got up we all hung out in the living room.

P was obsessed with the fan.  Mostly because we wouldn’t let him self-amputate his fingers (and that bothered him).

Chris had scuba certification lessons planned for the whole day so after he left the rest of us got showered and dressed and went back to Cafe Indigo for a breakfast date.  Kyle’s friend Julie (from elementary school!) lives in Sydney as well so we coordinated a meet up with her and her husband.

It was silly going back to Cafe Indigo since we were there the previous day for lunch but it’s a pretty awesome spot so I didn’t care.  I got the Salmon Benedict this time and Kyle got the same!  Again!  Laura and Julie both got the breakfast bruschetta and Aidan got the corn fritters.  Everyone was in love with their food.  I cleaned my plate yet again.

It was pretty fun just hanging out leisurely enjoying the gorgeous sunny weather and great company.  Mister was a popular baby naturally.

Afterwards we want back to Laura’s and let P nap.  He took an insane 2 hour nap before we decided to wake him up.  Poor kid was so confused on the time change.  Then we all headed to the ferry to go to Circular Quay and then to Watsons Bay.  Julie and Aidan ended up driving because they couldn’t find parking in Double Bay so we took he ferry and then met them at the Watson’s bay hotel.

What a fun scene!  It felt like Boat Basin in New York meets the Malibu Sands Beach Club (from Saved By the Bell) because it was a fun bar type scene right on the water front.  We immediately got a pitcher (called a jug in oz) to split.

There’s nothing quite like a cold beer on a hot day.  I liked most of the beers I tried but we were lucky to have Laura helping us in selecting because they aren’t all so great apparently.  They’re big on ciders here too – I had pear and apple.  Julie and Aidan joined up with us (they’d gone for a dip in the water since they beat us to the area in their car) and then we all ordered some food.

Fish n chips for both Kyle and me. When in Rome…

The chips were super salty which I of course loved.  I don’t eat fries often but when I do they better be good (otherwise it’s kinda a waste because grease and my gut are often at odds).  These were great.  Best fries I’ve had in as long as I can remember.  The fish was good too but the batter didn’t have much salt (or flavor at all).  Perfectly cooked though.  When dipped in aioli it was quite nice.

I had Laura’s cole slaw too and that was excellent.  So mayo for the win it seems.  Laura got a burger which she split with Chris, who came over to meet up with us as soon as his scuba class was done.

Julie and Aidan got a pizza and a trio of spreads with veggies. I took a pic because it looked so pretty.

P was a dream, as per usual, enjoying any attention he got from us or surrounding people.   I fed him before we left the house so he snacked on puffs and sipped water from his cup whenever he got a tad fussy.  A few pitchers later we left and walked along the beach to hike up to the lighthouse.

IMG_8148

P fell asleep in the ergo and stayed zonked out the entire walk – a solid 30 minutes.

We passed ladies bay and saw plenty of nude dudes. The views from the lighthouse atop watsons bay were spectacular.  Sydney is gorgeous.  The water is beautiful and the sky scape is just awesome.  I totally get why my sister lives here.

We split from Julie and Aidan after we got back to the beach and took P home to get dinner and do his bedtime routine.

For dinner we made taco salads (romaine, tomatoes, capsicum, corn, ground turkey, avocado, beans, lactose free cheese, salsa and blue corn chips).

The leftover ground meat, corn and avo were consumed by Patty-cakes over the next day(s).

We went to sleep early again since we we’re all exhausted from the long day.  Baby boy woke up at 5 am, a slight improvement from the previous day, but still one that meant entertaining him in our room for a few hours so as not to wake Laura and Chris.  It’s tough keeping him occupied without room to explore.  Trouble maker wants to get into everything and not be contained at all.

loved the pics! those veggies/spreads do look so beautiful! poor little guy AND parents re: time change. it’s really hard to go that far! i totally get it—that nagging foggy feeling but yet you push on because it’s such an incredible opportunity to see countries that far away you know? it looks like an amazing time with your sister! i’m not sure if i will visit aussie land (the snakes/dangerous insects/animals) kinda freak me out haha. let’s see how adventurous i get 😉

Oh you’re in my hometown!!! I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying Sydney 🙂 It’s funny, I’m currently in Colorado and my husband and I keep talking about moving to the US. It’s actually lovely to see home through the eyes of a visitor again, reminds me how beautiful Sydney really is 😉

I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay!! If you have time still, go into town and catch the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly. You won’t regret the trip out there, or the beach once you arrive 🙂 oh also, there are fantastic restaurants and cafes in the inner west area if you guys feel like a drive, and they all do gluten free & nut free!!

Of course, your sister lives there so can probably give you the full tour!!

Ooooh one last one – near Watsons Bay you’ll find Nielson Park (in Vaucluse). This is a darling little spot with a gorgeous beach, and the tea rooms are also lovely (not so allergy friendly but quaint).

    Enjoy!! xxxx
