I love Emergen-C drink powders, especially the Pink (breast cancer) flavor, but some of the ingredients leave me scratching my head.
Since I’m trying to be much more vigilant about labels, I figured there’s no better source than the people who make the product. Ask and you shall receive. To clear up the confusion, here’s info directly from the company.
Which of your products contain animal derivatives?
- Joint Health contains chondroitin which is bovine-derived. As of March 2009, Joint Health is shellfish-free. Boxes manufactured prior to March 2009 contain glucosamine which is shellfish-derived.
- Emergen-C Pink® and Emergen-C Immune Defense* contain honey derived from beeswax.
- Emergen-C Vitamin D & Calcium Bone Health Formula* and all Multi-Vitamin products (Emergen-C Kidz Orange Pineapple Explosion and Strawnanaberry Blast and Emergen-C Multi-Plus Apricot Mango and Cherry Pomegranate) contain Vitamin D3 which is derived from lanolin which is from wool.
- Emergen-C ALERT!® Shots and Powder contain CoQ10 which contains casein sodium from milk.
So there you have it.
Do what you want with the info.
Yep, you can find animal products almost in everything…Sometimes it totally surprises me! I am actually quite surprised they don´t put animal products on apples. But wait – they wax them. We do strange things to our food 🙂
Wow, thank you for this. I have always wondered about this, and recently started drinking Ultima instead. I highly recommend it. It’s lower in vitamins and minerals than Emergen-C, but it’s sweetened with stevia and the lower doses seem to agree with me better. I drink a big glass of it every morning now (the Ultima) and I have been WAY less bloated. I think the source of a lot of my bloating is actually electrolyte imbalance, so this probably doesn’t apply to many other people. Anyway, thank you very much for the info. Ultima is vegan. Says so on the label 🙂
So essentially, what you’re telling me is if I drink Emergen-C Vitamin D & Calcium Bone Health Formula, I’m basically licking a sheep? 😉
