While I have been waiting for the blogging inspo to come back to me (and the time to get on my comp), things have been happening!
I went on a date with my main squeeze (we f i n a l l y have a babysitter who the kids adore and we are making a big effort to use her regularly!).
We went to Magpie in Sac, which we have been to once before. I had forgotten how much we loved it when we previously went, but this was just as good (maybe better?).
We started with deep fried delicata rings (WOW) and then I got a salmon skillet with so much other yummy stuff I can barely even remember, while Kyle got the pork chop.
It was INCREDIBLE. All of it. We were blown away by how good it was. I think Magpie may be my second fave place to go out (after Kru – which is untouchably astounding food).
We are avoiding the car as much as possible now that the weather is nice, and this girl is big time building up her endurance.
Kyle was gone for a week, but then he brought us home berries 🙂
It’s rare, but sometimes I am in the mood for plain chocolate – no nuts, no flavors, no thrills – just 72% straight up.
In an effort to perfect (ok, ok, improve) their chopstick skills before we go on vacay, we went to Huku for dinner as a family. It’s close enough to walk to, which is awesome. And now that I’ve tried the other sushi restaurants in Davis, I’m 100% sure this place is the best.
And good news for us! They just expanded! We arrived just as they finished the final touches after adding the next door space, so now there is another whole area for seating! I’m so happy for them because they are only a couple of years old and I’m never sure how well places are going to do in this town. The turnover for restaurants is high.
We got a bunch of rolls to share and each kiddo got their own bento box.
We were determined to not make the same mistake we made last month, in which our ravenous monster children annihilated the rolls within seconds of them being placed on the table.
The kid bentos are fantastic – with either chicken or beef teriyaki (we got one of each and then they split them), plus gyoza, tempura prawn, and rice & veggies.
We got a rainbow roll, futomaki roll, dragon roll, and caterpillar roll.
Plus wakame salad.
And the best of the bunch…the Lion King roll!
Ok, so this was a new one for me and I’ve seen it hyped and praised all over yelp, but the idea of cooked sushi weirded me out a bit. But when we were ordering our server totally sold me on it and I am IN LOVE. It was hot and saucy and oozing mega umami with the broiled salmon on top, but then there was a warmed – but still kinda raw – crab and avo roll underneath. It was out of this world delish. I can promise I will never not order this now.
We couldn’t even finish it, but then later that night I dipped into the leftovers because I was in the mood for a savory night cap. Yum!
Day time mini date with my big kid. Guess what he wanted to do? Walk to the park behind our house and draw together. Done and done.
The next day Mr. P got to go on his birthday outing 🙂
He chose to go to a Kings game with us over a birthday party and we all had a total blast. V stayed home with her favorite babysitter (which was for the best anyway because she can’t handle loud noises very well) while the three of us enjoyed a Sacramento WIN (!) and then a dinner out on the town.
The stadium is right in the middle of DOCO (the new downtown commons area that Sac created when they built the new Golden 1 stadium), so there were tons of options for us to choose from as soon as we left the stadium.
We went to Sauced for some southern food.
We got the three meat plate to share, which included two sides. We chose pulled pork, sliced brisket, and pork belly burnt ends (for the meats) and cornbread and mac n cheese (for the sides).
But the Brussels sprouts starter was the best thing of all in my opinion. The pulled pork was a little dry and none of the BBQ sauces really did it for me. Kyle loved the burnt ends, but I stuck to the leaner cuts from the brisket and the Brussels (which had fried onions and a tangy balsamic on top with pieces of crispy pork belly). So good.
I think he enjoyed it as much as we did.
FYI, the Kings’ stadium food is also awesome, in case you ever find yourself at Golden 1 for an event. They made a huge effort to feature local fare from eateries in the Sac area and I almost want to get season tickets just to try out every vendor! The (above) fried chicken sandwich on a biscuit with tater tots was from the Sweet Bird stand (when we went to our first Kings game back in November).
End of the basketball season means pizza party time! I’m not sure I could recommend New York Pizza Pie in Woodland, but the kids loved the arcade room. They combined their tickets to get a plastic fish, which we have already lost, but I enjoyed schooling P in air hockey. 😛
