I love this place. If you’ve never been to The PLANT Cafe organic, I highly recommend.
I wasn’t in the city the entire weekend though. I spent a good deal of time at home with the fam too…

How far away from your family (parents, siblings, whoever) are you currently living?
My immediate family is in Nor Cal (where I grew up), but my in-laws and mom’s side of the family is in So Cal.

I am glad you enjoyed your visit. My parents are 7.000.000 km away, in Europe so I see them maybe once a year;( but it still feels so good to be home.
Those pictures from the Ferry Building market make me miss SF. I can almost smell the Blue Bottle coffee through my computer. I lived there for 6 years and my favorite thing to do every weekend was to go to the Saturday market. Thanks for sharing.

We live 2-4 hours from my inlaws and right around the corner from my relatives (many of whom we don’t speak to). We try to visit the inlaws once every 2 months or so.
That city looks wonderful! I wish Philadelphia would catch up with the organic act. It’s so hard to find a good place to eat there!

Oh man, I love SF – probably the only other city in the states I’d live – though my heart definitely belongs to New York. I’m in the East Village now, but I grew up in Brooklyn, where my parents (and grandparents) still live – so just a nice little subway ride away!

I hope you don’t mind me dropping into this post to thank you for your website.
I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been devouring your blog for about a week now. You have no idea what a service you are providing by sharing your food experiences, especially on FODMAP’s.
I’ve been disabled, on medical since January with a swollen abdomen and my digestive system barely functioning. I’ve suffered IBS-D periodically in my life, but never more than a few weeks here and there. Suddenly, I was faced with such extreme IBS-C, it took me out of work.
I eventually stumbled upon SIBO and FODMAP’s. My doctor put me on antibiotic and that helped, but it was the low-FODMAP diet that was missing. I’m returning to work tomorrow. I am not 100%, but improving daily. There comes a point when you just don’t care what you eliminate to get better.
When I looked at the low-FODMAP diet, it was had to figure out what to cook. Many people have IBS-D, so rice is good. But, it is not an option for me right now. Oatmeal has always been problematic for me, but I never tried to look for gluten free, so I may try that. I’m also looking into creamy sorghum through Bob’s Red Mill. They have an entire gluten free line of stuff, and their Gluten Free hot cereal is good, but has mostly brown rice.
One thing I am puzzled about is nuts. I have seen some reports that pistachios are high-FODMAP and other sources saying all nuts are fine. I am asking because I make a protein drink in the AM with half-banana, half-cup of lactose free milk, a few blueberries, and some rice protein powder. I’d like to use two Tbsp of Almond Powder (just finely ground almonds). I’d like to know if this could be a problem.

I currently live in SF and have been known to enjoy a Pepple’s donut from time to time (though nothing compares to Mighty-O in Seattle!). I’m curious as to what is your favorite vegan-friendly place in the city.
Wow! this place called The Plant looks amazing! But imposible for me to go, what a pity! I’m living in Barcelona but actually I’m from a town 200 km away. I don’t see my family very often but I’m very happy with my studies and enjoying this big city! I know you also love it, so, if you never come back I’ll tell you many places like The Plant to go!
When I was in SF last month for work, I stayed on Lombard Street and ate every meal at the Plant Cafe! Whoops!

All my family is “over the ditch” in New Zealand…. it’s sad, but NZ is far too cold for me (however beautiful and amazing it is) I have all my in laws about an hour flight away in Sydney though, so there is family relatively close.
SF…one of my fave cities! I still dream of my blue bottle latte I got when I visited the farmer’s market about 3 years ago…

hi diane, im so happy you have found relief in fodmaps and my site is helpful! i can totally relate to symptoms taking over your life…to the point where eliminating whatever to get better is worth it.
pistachios as far as i know, have fodmaps, but they are the only nut ive heard being an issue due to fodmaps. i think you should be okay with pure, raw nuts, so id start with those. is the almond powder something you make yourself? or is it almond meal? i buy bobs red mill almond meal, but i have never used it in a smoothie. have you ever made your own nutbutter because thats the safest way to know exactly whats in it. raw unsweetened nut butters are available at health foods stores but they are definitely expensive. another thing to try is sunflower seed butter.

Have you been to Portland? It’s even better. Seattle is a close second. SF is ok, but those two are a vegan’s paradise! I feel like I may end up in the Pacific Northwest one of these days because the food is calling me! 🙂

Thanks, Elise. It was what I had found on pistachios that made me wonder about other nuts. I hope those studying FODMAP’s will clarify the issue on nuts. The other thing I wanted to know about, similarly, was flax seed. Having IBS-C right now, I’ve wanted to increase things that would help ease that. Nuts and seeds are magnesium rich, but flax can have a laxative effect (many magnesium based laxatives have FODMAP’s in them, I’ve discovered). Consider how many doctors prescribe Miralax for IBS-C, and it is a FODMAP big-time. I was getting sicker on it.
I have gone ahead and used the Almond Meal. It is from Bob’s Red Mill. I need to get a new food processor. I had a little mini one and once made my own almond butter. I like it better than peanut butter.
My condition left me with malabsorption of anything taken in by the small intestine, so I’ve been increasing lots of things, including easy to digest proteins. I was concerned that the brown rice flour protein would bind me more, so I used a hybrid. Getting calcium has also been a challenge because when you’re bound up, you don’t want to throw calcium supplements at it. Unfortunately, Citrical – which advertises itself as non-constipating, has polyethylene glycol as one of the first ingredients. Now, you and I can guess why they would have added that (it’s the ingredient used in Miralax and is a FODMAP). I found another, more expensive supplement which uses a blend of calciums and magnesiums. It did not bind me, and may have helped the other way.
Yesterday, I made a small smoothie that I drank in 3 portions over the course of the day with 1 cup of lactose-free, reduced fat milk, 1/2 cup of OJ, 1 Banana, 2 Tbsp of almond meal, 1 Tbsp of brown rice powder.
I have to say, the almond meal worked well and I didn’t even notice it in there.

Today, I made my smoothie from Banana, low-fat lactose-free milk, almond meal, brown rice powder, and a heaping Tbsp of unsweetened cocoa. I added a smidgen of oure stevia powder figuring the banana may not be sweet enough to overcome the bitter, unsweetened cocoa. That was very good. I make enough for 3 servings, just under a cup each and that is used for my “snacks” at work.
thanks so much for these follow up comments diane. im glad you thought ahead to look at the calcium ingreds. for a while i was on calcium carbonate and it was very constipating so i switched to calcium citrate. much better. not sure what brand it was though so i cant guarantee the other ingreds. anyway, im guessing citrical is a similar formula but just a different brand.
i didnt know about the laxative effect of flax – how have you found it? have you tried chia seeds?
portland was AWESOME! i could go to blossoming lotus every day i think.
