Maui-ed 11 + 12

Purely Elizabeth granola is the best store bought granola I have ever eaten.  It’s crazy good.  It’s crunchy and sweet but the nutritional stats reveal it isn’t a sugar bomb…and I never would have known it because I make my own granola.  Reason 38973 being on vacation is so special.

I still amped things up with pumpkin seeds (I brought a bag from home).

We did the same morning routine (why mess with perfection) of beach and pool.  Then came home for food and naps.

Salad for lunch with leftover grilled fish and a home-made dressing from all the condiments I could find in the rental house.

100% guarantee she’s saying uh-oh in this photo (as she (accidentally” drops her water sippy cup).

No idea what we did that afternoon, probably just went back to the beach and pool.

Dinner take out from teppanyaki 2 go.  It’s more of a food stand than restaurant (“hole in the wall” seems too ghetto of a description because it’s awesome, but it’s in that range).  We called in our order in advance because we read reviews that it gets crowded because it’s so popular. So boom!  We got this legit food in no time at all.

As you can see from the notations on the boxes they were super knowledgable about what was in the sauces and stuff and since I asked if they could use tamari instead of soy sauce they made sure I knew the ginger sauce wasn’t gluten free.

We got two combo platters – one with steak and scallops (mostly for Kyle) and fish and shrimp (mostly for me).  One with fried rice and one with white rice, and both with greens beans.

DUDE.  Teppanyaki 2 go did not disappoint in the least.  It was like greasy take out but not gross or unnecessarily oily.  Just fried deliciousness.  The scallops (all the seafood, actually) were huge and freshly caught!  I couldn’t believe the portions we got for the price.  Bang for your buck, for sure.  Highly recommend.  Kyle could have eaten this every day I think.  He shared a scallop with me and his fried rice, and I gave a few shrimp to him.

Like the rest of the time, I made P and V meals in our rental kitchen (I don’t trust food for P that I haven’t made myself).  And like the rest of the time, we binged on chocolate like it was our last chance to get macadamia covered stuff ever. No shame.

The next morning we broke from tradition and went out to breakfast.  We went to Castaway Cafe (again) because it took approximately two minutes to walk to and was on the beach we were about to go to right after.  Location location location.

Kyle went with the loco moco (when in Rome, eh?).  It was kinda the most insane thing I’ve ever seen. You see it up there?  It’s a rice, beef, gravy, egg monstrosity.

In my own glutton corner, I went with the macadamia pancake stack.

IMG_5772

Oh, and I asked for extra macadamia nuts.  Seriously.

IMG_5773

The maple syrup was fine and all, but the coconut syrup was what I doused each bite in.  Have you ever heard of coconut syrup?  It’s good stuff.  I have never seen it before or since, so maybe it’s a Hawaii thing.

The kids had already eaten but I brought more snacks for them to occupy them while we ate.  It sorta worked but V still swooped on some of my pancakes.  Thief.  It’s SO DIFFERENT taking a child without allergies to a restaurant.  I feel so calm and relaxed just sharing with her and yet I feel so bad for P because it could be so effortless…but it’s not.  It’s non-stop planning and prepping and worrying and thinking 5 steps ahead.  I hope his future isn’t like this always.  But really, he’s fine.  He loves food.

Beach time until they were exhausted.

IMG_5776

Salad of leftovers again for lunch.  Unpictured chips on the side.  Kettle was my drug of choice.

IMG_5777

Went downtown for a stroll in the afternoon because I wanted P to see the banyan trees.  We talked a lot about them beforehand, so he was super excited.  I mostly liked showing him this because I remember my parents taking me to these on our family vacations too.  Full circle.

Before heading home, we called in a take out order from Aloha Mixed Plate.

IMG_5781

Kyle’s plate is above – with like five kinds of meat.  Mine is below, I got kalua pork and cabbage.  I’d been waiting to get kalua pork all vacation long!

IMG_5782

V went head over heels for the macaroni salad (she got my leftovers the next day).

And here’s how my night went…

IMG_5784

Because time changes are just friggin impossible with little ones…sheesh.  So what do you do in the middle of the night to keep a tiny person from waking up everyone else??  Tupperware?  Yup, tupperware.  Necessity is the mother of invention.
