Nine Eleven. Wow. A decade gone by.
I don’t think anyone will ever forget where they were on that fateful day in 2001. I was about to start undergrad at UCLA.
Several years later, on Sep 11th, I moved to Philly for RN school .
And then exactly one year later, again on Sep 11th, I moved to NYC.
Easy to remember? Or impossible to forget?
And that’s not the only thing that made headlines on this Sep. 11th…Serena’s rant at the US Open finals was another news maker. And it was the season opener for NFL football, too. Not that those three events were remotely on the same level in terms of importance, but still, they are worth mentioning [especially since those were the events my day revolved around].
Kyle and I rolled out of bed in the late morning, took Rusty for a walk (read: dragged him down the block to take a dump), and finally headed to coffee at Aroma Espresso Bar.
Aroma has locations on the UWS, SOHO, and Midtown.
The place has a very European feel – with it’s large communal seating areas and high quality fare. While simultaneously so quintessentially New York – with power breakfasts and quick on-the-go ordering. They offer everything from coffee and fresh baked goods to salads and sandwiches.
The menu is vegan friendly:
- Breakfasts – oats; muesli; fresh fruit & juices
- Salads – Organic quinoa; Health salad; Warm Garbanzo; Aroma Special; Sweet Potato Lentil; Middle Eastern; Mixed Green
- Sandwiches – Vegan Portobello; Avocado; Mediterranean
There’s even soy milk at the bar!
Kyle got the peaches and cream danish (in muffin form).
I stuck to coffee with soy milk since I wasn’t yet hungry.
We took our goods to go and walked through the park to the East Side to take the subway down to the East Village.
Why the East Village you ask? Because I wanted dessert for breakfast. Specifically, I wanted a (vegan) banana walnut chocolate sundae with gluten free brownies from Lula’s Sweet Apothecary.
Unfortunately, I neglected to check the hours they opened. We arrived at 12:30…and found this sad scene.
🙁 For the record, they open at 3 pm on Sundays. However, I’m unsure if they are open at all anymore because their website doesn’t work and the windows were all covered. Hmmm…
Back up option? Liquiteria!
I used to work blocks away from Liquiteria…it’s a wonderful place for fresh juices and clean, wholesome, nutritious food.
They have pressed juices, squeezed juices, blended drinks, liquid meals, and their own detox program [Rx cleanses].
Thanks to Gena, I’ve tried their juices, and I don’t know that there’s anything that could possibly compare to the freshness.
They do have food too, though.
I was in the mood to splurge so I got a cookie…or four.
Mmmm…it was like a cross between a oat bar and a cookie. While sweet and sticky on the outside, it was also bread-like on the inside. The middle was thick too. I’m not sure what flavor was dominant, but it was kinda pumpkin-esque with nutmeg/cinnamon spices going on. Very yummy.
I had some for breakfast (while in a bar watching football). Can you picture it? Me and my wheat-free, vegan, oatmeal cookie auto-refreshing my fantasy football team’s score with each play…if that’s not an image of contradiction I don’t know what is.
P.S. I totally won my first fantasy game of the year.
congrats on the fantasy win! (: bummer about lula’s, but looks like you made the best of it! did you get to check out the caftea website I sent you?! are you in love yet? 🙂
xo.
Liquiteria is still a place we want to try out! we have heard such great things about it 😉
Lula’s definitely IS still open! I went last week for a big ol’ mess of a wonderful sundae. You can catch them next time : )
I’ve read Gena’s posts on Liquiteria! It’s on my NYC list.
Congrats on the fantasy win 🙂
I love the idea of you and your wheat-free, vegan, oatmeal cookie auto-refreshing fantasy football team scores with each play in a bar. Sounds like a balanced lady to me! 🙂
Congrats on the win! 🙂 I know nothing about football so I doubt I’d do well!
You seem to have amazing places to eat around you! I am veryyy jealous!
Funny, Lula’s AND Liqueteria!!
LOOOOOOVVVVEEEEE Lula’s!
thank god for doggy doors, so my lazy butt doesn’t have to take P&R around the block for a dump. i love rusty!
