Most Whole Foods stores sell pizza dough that’s ready-to-go. They usually have both wheat and white available. Yesterday Kyle and I were in the mood for his and hers pizzas, so we stopped by the store on the way home from a neighborhood stroll. The dough was nowhere to be found! The employees at the sandwich station were kind enough to go to the back to get me some dough, but the only kind available was white. I was bummed, but we still got it (how could I refuse it after they were kind enough to go on a hunt for it).
As soon as I unwrapped it, the blob began to grow. I let it hang out on the counter for a while until it seemed to reach it’s full size.
In the meantime I prepped toppings.
Kyle picked some fresh basil while I sliced tomatoes and bell peppers.
I then divided the dough (2/3 for him, 1/3 for me) and we got to play Italian restaurant chefs. I was Giada and Kyle was Mario.
Without rolling pins, it gets hard at the end, but we made do. Isn’t Kyle’s crust perfect?!
The crusts cooked on their own for ~8 minutes at 400, then we took them out to cool for a bit before adding toppings.
His: olive oil, cheddar and parmesan cheese, basil, bell peppers, tomatoes.
Since his was bigger (twss), I put it in the oven 5 minutes before mine.
In the meantime, I added my toppings.
Hers: olive oil, white bean hummus, bell peppers, tomatoes, vegan cheese.
Since the dough was warm when I added the white bean puree, it melted into it right away and almost became one with the dough.
After 10-15 minutes at 400, they were ready!
The smell! I can’t even put it into words.
This was my first serving. Of course neither of us planned on finishing our entire pies…but we both did. 😉
And we both had puffed crispy treats for dessert too.
Oh my goodness they looked delish! Nicely done! I love making home made pizza!
Mmm…that looks great! Right now I’m busy making a list of all the recipes I must try after moving day(Tomorrow!) and this is definitely going on that list! 😀 BTW, Hummus as the sauce is genius!
Yum! 🙂 Homemade pizza is the best!
Awesome meal! I’ve never bought premade pizza dough but this looks like it’d be fun to watch “grow” haha. something about yeasty dough growing fascinates me!
never thought to put hummus on pizza before!
Oh man, that pizza looks incredible. I made a pizza for “us” last week and Meeker ate the whole dang thing. I need to do “his” and “hers” next time around.
yum! both pizzas look great. that cheese looks like it melts nicely — i’ll have to be on the lookout for that brand!
so….his cheese wasn’t vegan, was it?!?
haha. nope – hes still in a “transition” phase of sorts…we’ll see…
I just found your blog Elise, and let’s just say I may sequester myself in the house with my computer for a while 🙂
Your vegan pizza looks fantastic, and I’d love to know what vegan cheese you are using.
Sorry, I just saw the photo of your cheese.
Looks like fantastic dinner.
Yum! Micheal and I wanted to make our own pizza but making the dough is sooo labor intensive for just a quick dinner. I wish we had a place around here that sold dough! We have the pre-baked crusts, but it’s not the same..
haha. well thanks for the kind comment. im definitely a fan of follow your heart. they have great vegan cream cheese too. daiya is better for melting, but its also wayyyy more $$$$. if you grate the FYH cheddar alternative it works great. i eat it plain in slices too. glad you found me!!
nope. definitely not the same. does trader joes sell pre-made dough? some places have it in the freezer section and you just leave it in the fridge the entire day before you use it to thaw.
yeah. its best to have a clear cut distinction on whose is whose…otherwise those boys can get greedy 😉
I love that your humus became one with the dough! YUM! (I made a nut-based cheese once and baked it on pizza dough, similar experience and yes, divine!)
I have never tried the WF ready made dough — where do you find it? (I have purchased the frozen).
trick I’ve picked up as a poor uni student – if you dont have a rolling pin, wine bottles are an excellent substitute!
can i ask what vegan cheese is made of? i’m fascinated as to how people can make something so cheesey that isnt’ cheese!
(hi, by the way – first time commenting but I’ve been reading for a couple of weeks now 🙂 )
TJ’s sells premade pizza dough for only $1. They have white, wheat and herb flavors. So much better than the premade ones! Plus, it freezes well – just remember to remove from the freezer a day before you want to use it.
Fantastic!! I always give the bf twice my portion too. He’s twice my size…makes sense right?
AH man… this looks so good!!
hi tegan! thanks for reading 🙂 vegan cheeses vary in ingredients. follow your heart is a soy based cheese. i like the almond based cheeses too. if youre used to eating real dairy then i suspect you wont see them as a vary close replica because they are definitely different than true cheese. but they can be good. hope that helps!
its usually in the refrigerated section where the already prepared foods have been pre-packaged. otherwise you can ask for it at the pizza/sandwich counter.
good luck moving!! (blech)
“Since the dough was warm when I added the white bean puree, it melted into it right away and almost became one with the dough.” <-Omg, I.need.a.bib! 😉
Didn't "plan" on finishing?! Surrrrrrrrrrre! That pie wouldn't have stood a chance around me…probably would've had a few burnt tastebuds sacrificed just in the name of getting my pizza fix!
HA! That same thing happened to me a few weeks ago at WF! They looked and looked and only had white, so I bought it. And ate it. Totally prefer the wheat one, though. Your pizzas are fun and look tasty! XOXO
Thanks Elise – I am a dairy cheese eater so I would probably find vegan a bit unusual if I ate it – but it still looks good!
