A post from Sunday this late in the week? What the!?
Yes, I know I’m dragging last weekend out. The truth is, we don’t have internet (or food!!) at our new place yet and I’m leaving this weekend (again) to drive up to Sacramento for a funeral so I have little motivation to share my latest eats.
And last weekend I ate some great stuff, so why not make it last?
Breakfast started with coffee and almond milk. This is worth mentioning because we ran out of almond milk the second day I was home and I had to use Lactaid. What’s funny is that Lactaid used to be my non-dairy milk of choice, just barely edging out soy milk, but now I rarely (slash never) use either. I drink soy milk when I go to coffee shops that offer it as the only non-dairy option, but that’s about it. As for lactose free cow’s milk, well, I haven’t had it in a really realllly long time. I used to buy it for the sake of keeping some conventional items in the fridge for Kyle, but once I realized he didn’t care what kind of milk I bought, we converted to an exclusively almond milk household. He prefers it to all other milks just like I do, and going without it – even for a day – made us both realize just how much we love it.
Back to breakfast. I slept in and dilly-dallied the morning away. Cookbook browsing = heaven.
Eventually brunch-spiration hit me like a ton of bricks and I made a savory quinoa bowl, very similar to this one.
- leftover quinoa
- cherry tomatoes
- greens
- eggs
- soy sauce
I let the quinoa snap crackle and pot in the frying pan until it was lightly toasted and the greens were getting wilty.
Then I pushed them to the side and cracked in two organic eggs. It’s not imperative to do the whole separate-but-equal thing in the pan, but I like letting the eggs cook a bit before I mix them in with the rest of the lettuce and grains.
This is the best bowl because it’s massive and shallow. It makes food look good as you eat it.
After digesting Kyle dragged me out on a run, which wound up being a really great cardio sesh. I was an unhappy camper at the start but I’m definitely glad he coerced me.
oh! I almost forgot…Laura wanted me to show off her brunch, too.
These tomatoes were her side dish, sautéed in oil with Italian seasonings.
They accompanied an open faced sando with turkey, brie and greens on toasted olive sourdough. Gorgeous.
In the afternoon I got my snackface on. I didn’t take pics of the boring stuff, but I did roast 3 different kinds of nuts.
Liberal sampling ensued. 🙂
This is the savory version.
The sweet ones were partially for dinner. I barely managed to keep everyone’s hands off them to make it though.
Kale salad with a lemon twist.
- dino kale
- simple home-made citrus dressing
- dried cranberries
- maple roasted walnuts
What a salad!
Ok, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Before I even made this guy we were getting busy with happy hour cocktails.
I’m not really one to celebrate the Oscars, but I’m also not one to turn down a Moscow Mule…after all I do love ginger beer.
Unfortunately, these bevvies did not taste anything like an actual Moscow Mule. That’s what happens when you have the most potent limes ever.
I think this is the look of mutual disgust. Blech. They were so gross.
We forced them down while watching the red carpet pre-show. Was it just me or were there hardly any gorgeous dresses this year?? I had a few that I liked so-so, but none that I really gushed over. My mom was good enough to skip out on the tail end of it to prep dinner (don’t worry mom, you didn’t miss much).
Cornmeal crusted portabella mushroom burgers (recipe adapted from Sunset mag).
We toasted Udi’s GF whole grain buns and had spinach, tomatoes, and avocado as inner fixins’.
Due to a counting error, I ended up splitting a shroom with my mom, which was fine because it was HUGE.
They were really good, but the salad was my favorite.
If you are nursing a kale obsession like I am, make this salad asap.
After dinner we all watched the Oscars together. My sister printed out ballots for us all to vote and I got the most correct! Considering I have only seen The Help, this is pretty random. I also got every major category wrong (but somehow dominated all the sound, costume, and foreign film randoms).
Favorite fancy cocktail? [not beer/wine]
Do you ever do watch the Oscars with a group? Vote ahead of time?
I totally thought you’d see Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (or read the book actually) because the main character Oscar says “What the?!” a lot, at least in the book he does! How random is that?!
His name is Oscar. I guess that could be confusing in a post about the Oscars!
omg i just learned SO much from catching up. you’re moving or have moved. i NEED a drippy egg right now. you can make sparkling wine in the sodastream and you look fabulous in purple hahahaha
That salad looks fab! My favorite fancy cocktail is called a Stoli Doli. I had it at this Mexican restaurant in Colorado Springs. They infuse Stoli vodka with pineapple for a long time and then shake it so it is nice and chilled and serve it in a chilled martini glass with a big wedge of the vodka soaked pineapple in it. Mmm. 🙂
Hope the move is going (already went?) well! I also can’t turn down a moscow mule, they are my absolute favorite. And now I need to go make some quinoa because that first dish is calling my name.
The only movie I saw was The Help too! and I don’t have a TV and didn’t really care since I didn’t know any of the movies, so no Oscars for me this year!
My favorite cocktail used to be a vodka gimlet… Now I don’t eat processed sugar, so agave margaritas are my special treat!
Love a good mojito 🙂
i have the book on my shelf right now…clearly need to get a move on it!
well shoot girl. glad youre all caught up 🙂

first: since when does laura eat brie?
second: can you send me the recipe for the citrus vinaigrette used on the kale salad? i suck at dressings.
Parker, I had the same thought. And Brie is a soft cheese!
E, I like how you cook yo’ eggs all in the same pan. I like to create the middle portion of my grain and veggie blend as the nest for my egg and then stirring altogether. I say “grain” because I have officially moved away from constantly using steamed white rice to make my “fried” rice. Never thought I’d say this, but I’m quite happy with the subs and replacement for the white. =)
I could never pass up a dirty martini, I’ll even take a “bad” one. Dark and Stormies are up there, too, in keeping with the Ginger Beer theme.
I agree, the Oscar Gowns were “meh” there year.
it was goat cheese brie which apparently she tolerates. pretty sure it wasnt cheap either.
a- i was very confused about laura eating that brie as well!
b- ‘DUE TO A COUNTING ERROR’ man did you let mom off easy! that was the highlight of the whole damn night! she effed it up royally!!!
c- i thought i hated kale and that salad was bomb dot com
well, in the off chance she read it i didnt want to discourage her from cooking for me in the future…ha.
Okay, it’s now obvious that I’m behind in reading your blog.
1) Elise, whatever your motive, thanks for letting me off the hook a bit with the “counting error” and
2) Marie, I may never cook for you again (although I agree it was pretty hilarious that I can’t count family members accurately). Oops.
Good thing Elise was willing to share with me or I wouldn’t have been able to taste one of the portabella burgers I made.
Dinner looks great! And I love the pop of color of the cranberries in the kale salad. I’ve never been much of an awards show fan but if it gets me close to a cornmeal crusted portobello, hand me a ballot!
Favorite cocktail = Blue Monkey: blue curacao, coconut rum, orange juice and pineapple juice! Yum!
