Another waffle start to the day.
Followed by another cab ride to the heart of DC.
We left Kyle’s grandma at the DAR library so she could do research. I’ll spare you my sentiments on how much fun that sounds like to me. The inside was actually really neat – it looked like a cross between an old train station and the White House. They were filming celebrity jeopardy right next door (I tweeted about my Dr. Oz sighting), but we already had Smithsonian plans.
[above] From the American History Museum – war time posters that I found interesting; [below] from the Air & Space Museum – WWII pilot outfit my grandpa wore.
Pretty soon it was time for lunch.
Kyle and I walked, while his parents picked up his grandma in a cab.
The neighborhood is pretty cool – plenty of casual food options, including a Whole Foods (that wasn’t there when I visited a few years ago).
The concept is simple – it’s a salad bar with a focus on what’s local, organic, and seasonal.
You can create your own or pick one of theirs. You can get it warm with grains instead of lettuce, or in a wrap.
They have really unique ingredients too – like wasabi peas, toasted parmesan crisps, and baked falafel.
Kyle got the Derby Cobb and since he didn’t want the chicken and bacon, they actually offered him extra egg and avocado. That’s what I’m talking about!!
They also gave him a free ice cream sample (obviously they didn’t see his wedding ring).
I made my own with spinach, avocado, tofu, quinoa, pita chips, and grapes. Topped in a miso sesame vinaigrette.
Totally delicious. I also got a water refill in my klean kanteen.
I ate 90% of my salad and took the rest to go (I finished the last 10% a few hours later – and boy were those bites an ordeal*).
Everyone got a different salad, and everyone loved it. I was so happy to have a big bowl of greens in my face, especially from a place that is so hippie friendly. Sweetgreen’s emphasis on sustainability definitely makes me want them to expand to CA.
*More on that later.
Great to see that these kind of places are popping up everywhere. When I go to a new place, I always worry about the food quality. Lately, it’s been getting much better. I think that there is a massive shift going on which is GREAT!
I LOVE build your own salad places! I haven’t found good one near me in Chicago yet, but I’m sure it’s out there somewhere…
Yum! There is a place kind of like this near my apartment called Ingredient! I love it! 🙂
Yes! I loved the American History Museum. We never made it to Air & Space. I feel like you could live over there for years and still not see everything. So much history. Lunch looks a-mazing! MMm.
No way! I just read Gena’s post on Sweet Greens and then this one in my reader, totally spooked out. Sounds awesome tho. x
Me too! I was just going to post about the double Sweet Green blogs too. (Double spook!)
haha, i know, i saw it too…following gena’s palate is never a bad way to dine!
air and space was good, but you were better off with the american history museum in my opinion. that one had SO much cool stuff. but yes, i agree, there are so many smithsonians and museums i would have to live there to try and see everything!
thats such a cool restaurant name!
there must be one! those places are so huge in nyc.
i know. i love it. 🙂
I <3 SG.
I also failed my Orgo exam, so the wkd of studying was for naught. I should have come out and played with you instead 🙁
