Since it’s currently a million and four degrees in Los Angeles, our apartment is in the upper billions range (overhead fans don’t do too much). Stove top oats were definitely not happening and I hadn’t prepped overnight oats, so my Friday morning started with this beaut.
Plain greek yogurt, golden delicious apple, 365 waffle square cereal, peanut butter and cinnamon.
I have mentioned my main cereal “issue” before (the inability to finish fewer than four bowls in a single sitting), but I have another one. I’m not sure if anyone else has this problem, but whenever I eat cereal I get really bad reflux. Even when I wait for-eeeeeh-ver after breakfast to exercise, I still feel the slosh slosh slosh (and the subsequent GERD). Even if I wait until the evening to exercise, I still suffer from my early morning bowl(s) of cereal. And I hate it. It really makes working out miserable.
To remedy this situation, I have to either (A) avoid cereal altogether, (B) eat cereal post- work-out only, or (C) suck it up and deal with the consequences (namely discomfort and horrible exercise sessions). Lose, lose, lose. Lately, though, I have discovered a plan D, which involves enjoying cereal with yogurt instead of milk. Less liquid means less slosh, which means no reflux over the next 24 hours.
As long as the ratio of cereal to extras is imbalanced in the favor of the “extras”, my esophagus doesn’t seem to suffer. As much.
Anyone else have this cereal problem? Kyle says he does, too. So at least I’m not a total freak. Or maybe we are just freaks together, with our cereal-ly annoying problem.
i have a cereal problem. i can never stop at just one bowl.
That’s one of the reasons why I plainly avoid cereal. Seems like they don’t fill me up until I’m on my fifth bowl then BAM! I feel sick 🙁
And I agree with you about the sloshing feeling when you work out after eating cereal. Cardio is the worst!
My brother eats cereal everyday and has no problem with it- everybody is different I guess!
By the way, congratulations on your first anniversary!
That´s clever to add yogurt instead of milk, I should try it – because I have the same problem. But I usually go with plan A and avoid cereals. I don´t like them that much, so it´s not a real problem for me. I still cook my oatmeal even if it´s 35 degrees outside 🙂
You’re lucky that it’s just cereal that causes you to have reflux problems! (see the good in everything right?) I have to wait at least 2 hours after eating anything before I can go work out- I run so it’s super intense and painful if it happens 🙁
Happy (belated) anniversary btw!
Yeah, this plagues me and my sister aswell. I will spread the word about this yogurt idea. Thanks!
Meeker has the same issues. I don’t ever eat before I workout…so, I might too, I just have yet to discover it.
The extras are the best part anyway!
I agree! Can’t eat anything but an apple before I work out. Especially cereal. Cereal hurts. My day is always…wake, apple, wait ten minutes, run!
I have a really hard time eating much of anything before a workout. Usually I will eat half a banana but that is about all I can handle!
Pingback: TGI…
i figured out the yogurt thing awhile ago, and it changed my work-out slumps/slush, too! and it has way more staying power w/ me. 6 bowls arent as necessary, although still wanted…
words of wisdom for sure. i just wish my body listened 😉
but if i work out later in the day, i have already eaten a few meals. and even if i had cereal for breakfast and something else for lunch and then wait until six pm to run, i always ALWAYS have cereal regurg.
thank you for the anniversary wishes!
i generally have to wait 1-2 hrs after eating before i work out too…it depends on the food and my GI tract that day…cereal is a no go even 8 hrs afterwards though. so weird.
thanks for the 1 yr wishes 🙂
ditto.
I have a SERIOUS cereal problem. I’ll have a bowl and then keep pouring a little more milk with a little more cereal so I feel like I’m not eating a ton, but then it defeats the purpose when I do it fifty times. Love me some Trader Joe’s Bran Flakes with raisins 🙂
