Back to work

On Thursday my alarm went off and I popped out of bed with a quickness.

You may be wondering why I was so anxious about starting the day…

IMG_3475

It certainly had nothing to do with the excessively layered outfit I had laid out to wear (of course it’s suddenly 80+ degrees at sunrise the day I have to wear professional attire).

It also had nothing to do with the 25 minute bus ride next to Mister I’m-going-to-broadcast-my-cell-phone-conversation-to-the-world.

As I previously mentioned and then shared via twitter, I was in fact at a follow up job interview.  I was pretty nervous because I knew it was my dream job, but my pre-meeting Starbucks helped calm my nerves.  :)  The interview went so well that I was offered the job at the end of it (which I obviously accepted).  Next thing I knew I was chatting it up with my future nursing coworkers.  And now my life in California is getting to be so incredibly perfect someone may have to pinch me.  Thanks to everyone who wished me luck!!

Afterwards I called Kyle, who was on his way back from a conference in downtown LA, so I hung out for a few minutes until he picked me up.  I had to take a picture of him with his ridiculous looking blue-tooth thingy.  I’m sorry, I know they are the only practical (and legal) way to talk while driving, but they look absolutely absurd.  Clearly, he didn’t enjoy the photo sesh.  I’m sure he’ll love this post.

Anyways, we both drove back to Santa Monica while I called my fam to share the news.

And then it was time to feast.

IMG_3480

Snack plate of carrots, cukes, celery, and leftover baked tofu with a brand new tub of roasted red pepper hummus to go to town on.

IMG_3481IMG_3484

On the side I had brown rice bowl with half an avocado and some more roasted red pepper hummus

IMG_3482

Pretty stellar.

IMG_3486

Mash and munch.  As if you couldn’t figure that out.

Once I had spread my joyous news to everyone west of the 405 freeway, I set out for a nice afternoon jog.  I was on cloud nine the entire time and my 30 minute run felt like 2 minutes.

IMG_3347

Post run I had an apple (which was actually my 3rd of the day, but as usual, my others managed to evade my camera lens).  I really think I capture less than 75% of my apple consumption.  While that may give me a “D” in photog class, the subject is kinda a snooze on film, so it’s really a favor to you all.  Therefore, I give myself an “A” for the course.

To celebrate the day’s successes, Kyle and I went to dinner at Real Food Daily

IMG_3489

I’ve been wanting to go here forever, but we’ve been saving it for a special occasion.  RFD is a vegan foodie’s dream restaurant.  If you live in LA and haven’t been, do yourself a favor and get in the car now.  It will change your life (and I’m saying this as a former New Yorker, who has been fairly spoiled by vegan dining options).

IMG_3490

I wanted every single thing on the menu.  No joke, this place has seroius black hole potential…as in, it will be very dangerous when I feel like a “treat.”  We walked to the restaurant, so you can see the distance thing is not only NOT a deterrent, but in fact, a selling point.

After serious menu browsing and meal flip-flopping, we ordered.

IMG_3491

Kyle got the RFD burger with the works which came with either a side Caesar or house salad.  He went with the Caesar.

IMG_3493

In addition to the normal lettuce & tomato routine, the burger was piled high with avocado, tempeh bacon, and a melty cashew based cheese

Kyle ate every last morsel of the burger.  It looked like he enjoyed it :)  Based on appearance alone (because I wasn’t able to weasel a sample bite) it reminded me of the Plant burger I had in SF.

IMG_3494

For my meal, I got The Club which was a double decker sammie with seitan, tempeh bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, and veganaise on toasted sourdough bread.

IMG_3497

Do I even need to say how amazing this was?  It was perfection.  I don’t know how they got their tempeh bacon so crispy, but I think I need to learn.

IMG_3498

I chose the house salad on the side and just like Kyle, my plate was polished by the end.  Nary a scrap left behind.

IMG_3499

We got a little somethin’ somethin’ for the road, too.

IMG_3506

Hello lover.

IMG_3507

This would be the dark fudge brownie with chocolate chips

IMG_3511

Kyle barely allowed me to get a taste he devoured it so quickly!  Maybe it’s because after my first bite my eyes nearly popped out of my head.  Mmmmm.

IMG_3500IMG_3515

I had Celestial Seasonings Chai tea with it.  What a combo!  This honey vanilla variety is even better than Tazo’s chai.  Wow.

We got one more dessert for the road, too…so there’s even more to look forward to.  Kinda an epic day for me.

Congratulations on the successful interview! I bet that Starbizz helped, but I’m sure you were the real star.

Isn’t it funny how they tell us that caffeine will wind us up but it really calms (me at least) down?

Ah No Way! You must have nailed the interviews. Your life is just falling into place one awesome thing after another (you deserve it – you’ve obviously worked hard for it)… And that restaurant is my ABSOLUTE, NO QUESTIONS favorite of all time. Had i recommended it to you before? If i didn’t i definitely had meant to. It is amazing and i love everything on the menu. Definitely try the cornbread that they make their next time. It is freaking awesome. Their seaweed salads are great as well. Congratulations again! I hope i get to make it out to SM again next April!

  16. Courtney

OMG–Congrats! That is awesome. I am so happy for you :-)!!

And, haha, 75% isn’t a D–that would be at least a C. So you are doing better than you think, lol!

The fact that you not only got the job BUT they offered it to you at the end of the interview…no fake “suspense”, well, clearly, youre a freakin rock star of a nurse and major congrats to you!!!!!!

That restaurant, no, I had no idea that lil slice ‘o paradise was an hour and a half up the road from me. And yes, all NYC’ers are spoiled by raw vegan food and if you are sayin it’s off the hook, then truly, it is. That choc dessert…omg, that’s worth the drive!

Do I smell a lunch date any time soon? Scratch that…drinking out please!

  21. Allison

    Congrats on the job!

And if you think dinner was amazing, you HAVE to go for the brunch menu. Holy smokes! You won’t be sorry.

Congratulations!!!! I knew you’d have no problem at all. Your love for nursing just shines through, and I’m bet they need the help. I love that your So Cal life is coming together nicely. Means it was definitely the right thing to do!

  25. Courtney

Haha…me too, but technically, 75% would totally be a “C”. Or, as my slacker friend would put it “a STRONG C”, lol.

  26. Deirdre

Congrats on the job! You sound like an amazing nurse and obviously the interviewers saw that!
